Re: Matt of Southern Illinois

Hi,
My great great grandfather was John F. Matt and his wife was Martha Matt. My mom's (LaDona Ihmels/Matt) mother (my grandma who I never met) was Anna Matt (sister to Alma, Bertha, Lena, Emma (your mom), Avie (Ewald), Olga, Emil and Margaret).

I have just begun the lengthy task of finding our roots and I am starting with John Matt. From what I understand, he was born July 2nd 1879 in Poland and came to the U.S. around 1903. I went with my parents to the gravesites and took digital pictures of all the grave stones....in case you are interested.....
Do you have any information for me regarding John Matt??? I know some folks in the family have researched this and am planning on seeing Avie & Jeanette in the near future.

Here is what I know........

John had 2 brothers....Joe & Fred Matt.
I found John's 1918 war registration stating he was from Russia-Poland.
I also found the 1930's census that listed all his kid's names....they lived at 1133 Trendley in East St. Louis IL. (Originally 1132 Trendley, however, he built a big house for all his kids and then the little house burnt down during the race riot.

Thanks
Mark E. Hammond
(Ladonna Ihmels-Hammond's son)
CELL: 314 398-6275 (note...it's a 314 area code, not 618).

I was born at Christian Welfare Hospital in ESL. I now work for AT&T and live in Manchester MO. I think you may remember my sister's Pam (deceased) and Linda.....
I'm searching for information on ANTOINE and HARRIET (nee Barber) MATT and their descendents. I'm a direct descendent of Antoine Matt whom arrived in Australia sometime around 1860 and would dearly love any information or to help out anyone interested in the same Matt family.

My Matt family tree is roughly:
Antoine and Harriet (nee Barber)
> Charles and Charlotte (nee Davis)
>> Edward Arthur and Emma (nee Famä or Farmer)
>>> (William) Edward Arthur and Nancy Gladys (nee Roser)
>>>>Phillip Michael and Bronwyn Louise (nee Evans)
>>>>> Eloise Claire (me)

Kind regards
Eloise
I was wondering if you were able to find more information on the Matt family from Liechtenstein and would be willing to share it with me.

Matt (Mott)family in Pittsfield, Mass

My grandmother's (Mildred E. McDonald) birth record says her mother's maiden name was AUGUSTA MOTT(MATT). But Mildred's marriage certificate says her mother was Catherine A. MOTT(MATT). Augusta married James E. McDonald in New Haven Ct in 1895. According to their marriage certificate James' wife is listed as Augustina MOTT(MATT). Augustina's father is listed as Augustin MOTT. . Are there any MATT/Mott relatives who can clarify this?

See my messages regarding August Matt. There is a Robert Matt. I was told he lives in Sikeston, Missouri. (Told this by a Matt cousin) This may or may not be the connection. Try lookup Missouri Genealogy web sites. There were many Matts who settled from the east coast to East St. Louis, Illinois(St. Louis is across the Mississippi from ESL) in the 1800s and early 1900s. Many have descendents still in the area of St. Clair County (Illinois). You might try the St. Clair County Genealogy Society's web site, too. Good Luck!
Kathleen Matt Pritchett KathleenPritchett2@home.com

ISouthern llinois Matt Family

My grandfather was John (Johann) Ferdinand Matt. He settled in East St. Louis, Illinois.(Circa 1911 - 1968) He worked for the railroad in East St. Louis. His wife's name was Martha. They had the following children: Ewald, Emil, Olga, Martha, Emma, Lena, Bertha, Alma, Ann. Each of these children lived in St. Clair County Illinois. I am trying to get the names of John F. Matt's parents. (He is listed as being born in Russia.) Or the proper names of his brothers. (There were Matts in ESL during the late 1800s. But I have not been successful so far. Does any one have information? Thank you so much.

Please look at archived threads (messages). I am looking for the ancestors of John Ferdinand Matt who married Martha Peterkeit in 1911 (probably in East St. Louis, Illinois - St. Clair County at St. Peter's Luthern Church). I have traced the Matt family in East St. Louis to the late 1800s. (I believe that were many Matts in the city of East St. Louis in the early 1900s. Particularly, I am looking for John F. Matt's father and brothers. Does anyone have a direct chain? I posted in 2001 but have had several computer crashes. Also, my email address is Pritch62269@charter.net to write me directly.
THANK YOU ALL. I know genealogy is time-consuming, but delightful! Kathleen Baran Matt Pritchett 01.21.02

Chris - I believe we were in contact few years ago and lost touch. Your Peter Matt was a brother to my grt grandfather Augustus Matt. Peter married Celeste Hebert on July 11 1881 in St Anne's RC Church, Mooers Forks NY. Celeste is sister of Marie Hebert, who married Augustus. They were living in Clinton County in June 1900 and in Bristol City, CT in 1920. Haven't found them in 1910 census yet.
Not sure when they moved to Brattleboro VT. I also found info on burial in St Michael's Cemetery in Brattleboro. Went there to find Peter & Augustus mother - Celeste (Sally) Lamoureax. She died Oct 12 1907. Her husband Peter Matt (sr) died November 1894 and is buried in St Anne's cemetery Wood Falls Rd, Mooers Forks NY. My uncle told me that Celeste went to visit brother? (found son Peter, not brother) and she died while visiting.
Please email me if you like more info. Kristine
