Matta Family

The name Matta comes from the old Aramaic language, which translates to Matthew. I don't doubt that there are a lot of Mattas spread around the world, but there point of origin is from Mount Lebanon which today in in modern Lebanon. There are a lot of Mattas that come the vilage of Bhamdoun in Lebanon, and also from its neighboring areas, my maternal grandmother is a Matta from Bhamdoun, we are able to trace her family tree to the 12th century.
cheers

Re: Matta - Italian!!!

this is my message: The name Matta is originated in Sardinia - Cagliari. It has been there for hundreds of years and represents still today a big clan. So most of Italian-Matta's in the world are originated from southern part of this island. Nevertheless, the name is originated in the middle east specifically in Lebanon were still today the name can be traced back thousands of years of a wealthy family. If you have more informations, please let me know because im trying to trace family roots.

Thank you

Hi Rob, Yes that would be good thanks. Would also appreciate photos of 27 & 28 Ledra Road if it is possible.

Can you clarify whether Stephen Wellington Matt married his cousin Mary harriett Matta? It was St Austell Dec qua 1879 5C 170. I have checked the 1881 census and it sure looks like he did.

Peter

Thanks for the offer. I have some on the Fewins in St Austell and at least 3 of them moved on to Akron, Ohio where a large contingent of Cornish went.
I am currently researching the connections in St Austell/St Ewe of Fewins/Matta/Geach/Varcoe.
I also have an Albert Jenkin marrying a Rhoda Ruth Woodfield in Dec qua 1881, Poplar 1c 1243. I would like to know where in Cornwall he taught after marrying. I believe he died some few years later.
Don't go overboard with researching though!!

I know absolutely nothing about my granmother Albina's first husband, except that his last name was Matta, and he was Italian (or perhaps Sicilian?) and probably was born in Pennsylvania.
My grandmother was 69 when she died in 1977, so I am guessing he would have been born in the early 1900's, as her birth year was 1907.
Please -- any info would be nice.

They resided in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Maria was a Native American/Apache. I've spent hours looking for the Matta family but all I find are Mattas of every nationality except American Indian. Anyone out there able to lend me a hand? I would sure appreciate the assistance! Thank you.

That is pretty crazy, my father's name is Ronald Matta. We are all in the southern California area, but his parents moved here from Texas. My ancestry is kind of a mystery to me also. No one on my dad's side seems to have a clear idea what the history is. If anyone can shed some light on the subject it would be most appreciated.

Hello, I am researching my husbands family...His last name is Matte...BUT THE NAME WAS CHANGE.. Used to be pronounce Matta.. They all settled in PA, in the Scranton area, some around Mayfield. History is told that the name was change when the family immg. from Italy - some say it was the mafai, the family was trying to make a clean living for their kids. Some say they left wifes behind in Italy, so they change the name to hide from there first wifes. I found the connect when the came over from italy, but I cant find them on any ship list or on Ellis Island--(Im not sure how to spell the name...)
Happy Hunting
Mary

Re: Andrew Matta& wife Anna Zipay

The names of Matta and Zipay are very common names in the village of vysny zipov in Slovakia where I come from. Your post is pretty old so i assume you allready found some related information. If not, you could find some more information in the archives of the evangelical church of vysny zipov. According to the stories told here, someone with the name Zipay or later written as Zipaj is one of the founders of that place in the 17th century. Therefore the name of this village is now Zipov (adding -ov means belongs to) This family name is very old. So you will surely find some records in the archive. I searched the name Ondic and Repja which is my ancessors, I did find some information but there is a lot of information about your family name too. I hope this helped you a little bit. P.S. Sorry for my bad english, I am working on it :)
