Hello Geoff
Are you any relation to Thomas and Mary (Adams) Matters? They came out to South Australia in 1852 aboard "Sea Park". I am a descendent of their son Thomas James Matters and his first wife Emily Novis.
I have information the Matters came from Launceston Cornwall, however Thomas and Mary were living in Plymouth before departing for Australia.
Any information would be of interest.
Cheers
Dianne from Victoria

Hi Peggy,

You may well be right. The photograph was given to me by a family member who had identified the couple as William and Rose. I have another photograph of William taken at his father's funeral in 1902 and there are some discrepancies with the photo in question. The photo I have is a family group photo, but the person who gave it to me requested that it was not published! However, I have cropped William out of the original and attach a copy for you to compare.

I would be interested if Merve can positively identify that the person in question is John Turner (Fanny's father, I presume?)I would also be very grateful for copies of any family photos you may have.

I have managed to trace the Metters family back to about 1794. I am happy to share this with you. Give me a call on my usual email williamsbj@btinternet.com.

Regards
Brian

Have just perused your photos and Merve disputes the William Metters and Rose England one He thinks with some certainty that it is his Maternal grandparents John and Caroline/Catherine Turner David has a copy of another photo we think is rose and one we think is william

HI,
The "lady from New Zealand" here.
Since Janice posted that last I've proved that her Isaac and my Isaac are the same person.
And found that his brother also emigrated to the States (haven't told you that bit yet Janice, only satisifed myself on that one today).
I've written up both Isaac and brother William on the web.
See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendersonandandrews...
and navigate from there.
Love to hear from any more descendants as William's lot is completely from census data, no live people that I've found as yet.

In addition to the known branches down from Richard Metters and Patience Pike, I also have a Jane, dtr of a Thomas and Susannah (?of Thrushelton?) to find a home for. She married another of my DAWE extended tree, a Jacob BIDGOOD and ended up in New Jersey.

Regards
Lorna

William Matters is in the 1870 US census in Waukesha, WI with his wife and several children.
He is also in the 1880 in Waukesha, WI with more children added.
He is in the 1900 with two Granddaughters listed: Iva and Myrtle.
This information I have come up with purely from the census.
Census data showed her arrived in 1857. One child didn't jibe from 1870 to 1880. Lucius? turned into Gen? S
One of their grandchildren, Myrtle married my uncle Howard Ruddy in Minnesota. Unfortunately Howard is dead now and the family doesn't know who Myrtle's father and mother are. There is no 1890 so which of the three daughters is Myrtle's mother is unknown. I have the names of the children etc from the census if you would like them.

My great grandmother was Julia Ellen Matthers, born in 1860 in Erie, PA. Her father was Jacob Matters/Matter b. 1829 in Alsaces-Lorraine. He emigrated to Erie, PA in 1847. His wife's name was Mary E.?? from Germany. She was born abt. 1832. The surname changed from Matter>Matters> Matthers> Mathers> and some changed it to Matthews, and Mathews. My Great grandmother married Laurens/Lawrence Windermeier/Wintermeyer. His father was Andrew Windermeier m. to Catherine?? both born in Germnay. I had the Erie Cemeteries send me the listings for Matters, and Matthers. I have some of your relatives listed in these cemetery listings. I can send you the information I have. E-mail me at sue@remconinc.com. I do think my Jacob is related to your Matters, but I am not sure how. He may be a brother to the Francis Matters, or the Mathias Matters. I have no idea at this point. The sponsor of Jacob in his immigration information was a Michael Miehl,of Erie. Does anyone have a Miehl in their family, or Windermeier,Wintermeyer, or any variation of that name? It is possible they were related to the Matters in another way besides marriage. I also have a current Erie, PA. phone book, and will look anything up for anyone.

This is Edward Matters born 8/19/28. Father also Edward born June 22, 1898. Had a brother Wallace who resided in Richmond Hill, and a another brother Walter whose nickname was Buster, who married a girl from France in WW II. Two more brothers, Wilson and Harold and two sisters, Rose and Ella (I think). Any connections out there?

My dad's (Walter Matters) father (Joseph Matters) had brothers and sisters (I think) who would have had children also in the early 1900s. Let me know if there is any connection. So far I've not found any relatives. My dad lost track of his Matters relatives around 1930.

Bob, don't know about a reunion. I think everyone would like to have one but, of course, no one wants to take on the task of putting it together. I think it would be great if it could be planned when everyone (including out of staters) could be back in MD. (yehat@erols.com)
