Polly Mattoon

It is often quoted that Isaac Rugg married Polly Mattoon, b. Hampshire Co. MA in 1769 (dau. of Abel Mattoon and Mary Allen). If Mary Allen was born in 1756, she would have been 13 years old at the birth of Polly.

I wonder if this might be inaccurate, and that he married Polly Mattoon, listed as born in Athens, Windham Co. VT 10 Apr 1778 (IGI). I also have seen a marriage date of 18 Mar 1778 for Abel Mattoon and Mary Allen.

Does anyone have info to resolve these questions?

morcoco

Ellen, my line goes from Phillip John Gershom Eli. However I have been researching the entire tree. Gershom was born in Deerfield, His son Gershom (mother Abigail Chappell) was born in Hebron Ct. in 1746. He died in Salsbury Ct, in 1774. Gershom (mother name (Jemima Abel) was born in Mass. in 1720, I have no other info on him.

Abner Mattoon's obituary in the Oswego Daily Times gives his birthdate as Oct. 15, 1814. It also states that he was the son of Henry Mattoon. Does this fit in anywhere?
Does anyone know of any connection between Abner and the Newell or Lawrence families? In her 1887 will, Sarah H. Coats of Syracuse, daughter of John and Avis (Lawrence) Newell, makes bequests to Caroline N. Mattoon of Oswego, describing her as "wife of my cousin Abner C. Mattoon."

From the April 1907 Old Northwest Quarterly p 134 (reprinted in "Our Ancestors of the Westerville area, a Genealogical History" Harold Hancock, Ed 1981)

"John Mattoon and wife, Thankful Stebbins, and his two brothers, Seth and Anson, came from Chelsea, Vt., to Worthington, Ohio in 1806, and he, with wife, removed to the northwest section of Blendon township in 1808."

I live in the area and could take photos of the stones, I know a couple are in poor shape. (one is Orren Matton who died in 1823, son of J & T, another is an infant of Willis)

There is also an Austin Stebbins buried in Pioneer Cemetery, don't know if he is related to Thankful or not.

Lucia Mattoon and her mother

Have reason to believe that Lucia Mattoon (b- abt 1836) was the daughter of Mary _____, (b-abt 1808) and that they lived in Northfield, Massachusetts in about 1836-1843-ish. Also have reason to believe that Mary married again to Samuel E. Ford in Northfield, Massachusetts, and went to live (with her Mattoon daughter) in West Troy (now Watervliet), Albany Co., New York in about 1843-ish, with new husband Samuel E. Ford. I need some help with this one, folks. If anyone has any more info, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Leanne, I believe Alan is right. I think Lydia b. 1757 is the daughter of Philip[Philip, Gershom, Philip]. Phillip Mattoon married Eliner Roberts in 1751 in Hebron CT. First son born Hebron was Able 1752, then came Sylvanus, Nathan, Lydia, Sarah and Rufus. In 1774 Phillip and Elinor signed a church covenant in Hartwood [near Washington MA]. Phillip married again after his wife died to Martha Spencer who was a widow. That took place 28 Oct. 1783. Philip"s family traveled north to the Berkshires and could have had Lydia in NY which is not far away. Hope this helps. If I can help let me know.

Hello,
I am searching for any information on the parents of Philip Mattoon who married Sarah Hawks in Deerfield, Massachusetts about 1677. I believe his father may have been Hubertus Rupert Robert Hijbrecht Mattoon. Where he was from or his parentage is unknown to me. Any further help on this line would be greatly appeciated.
Respectfully Yours,
Angie

Hello,
You said that Sarah Mattoon did not marrie Matthew or Zacharah ...........I beleive you are incorrect in this as Zacharah Field is my (however many) great grandfather and His wife, Sarah Mattoon is my great (?) grandmother.

I do not know the answer to your question about how long she was in captivity by the Indians or when she returned as I just recently found my connection to this family and the rich history of Deerfield, Massachusetts.

Respectfully Yours,
Angie

Do a search on either bookfinders.com or Amazon under Mattoon and it should come up. It's been reprinted but not updated.

William T. Mattoon is in there showing 2 more children, viz., James Ward Mattoon, b. 6 Jul 1897; d. 10 Mar 1951; and, William H.
SARAH MATTOON B. DEERFIELD1704

UPDATING REQUEST FROM MANY YEARS AGO..
Please e-mail me if you have any information. Thanks

My sixth great grandmother was Sarah Mattoon Fields. Born April 25, 1687. Died
March 21, 1752. Married Zechariah Field Dec. 31,1711. I have some information about
Sarah Mattoon. She was 17 when captured by Indians at Deerfield Mass. on Feb. 29,1704.
She was taken to Canada. I do not know when she was returned. She was engaged to
Matthew Clesson when captured. However, Zechariah had proclaimed his love for her.
Matthew was killed by Indians at Deerfield on June 9, 1709. I believe she was with the
Indians for 5 years and then escaped to a convent in Montreal for two years, before
returning to Mass. According to the story, Sarah left the Indians on June 9, 1709. the
same day that Matthew was killed. Also, I understand that Sarah received some
inheritance from Matthew. She had been reluctant to return because she loved Zechariah
and was engaged to Matthew. The fact that she did not marry Matthew and did marry
Zechariah, seems to lend some credit to the story.
I want to know how long she was in Canada. I would appreciate any help.

Much has been written of this cousin of mine till she is a romantic legend. Anyone reaching this point may very possibly have things said or written that are not true. The only facts I have found can be found several places including in the FIELD genealogy. They are she left the indians June 6, 1709, was redeemed with money and left sometime after that. She returned home sometime before Dec. 31, 1711, because she married your mr FIELD on that date. Hope this is of some help.

Re: SARAH MATTOON B. DEERFIELD1704

There are two books out you would enjoy reading on this subject. One written by Sarah's pastor John Williams, is "Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion", this is about the capture of himself and 100 or so others in the raid that took Sarah. The second is a modern look back at the incident in a book by John Demos telling the story of the "Unredeemed Captive" the preachers daughter. Thanks for the reply and good luck in your search.

Re: John Mattoon & Thankful Stebbins - Franklin County, Ohio

One more item of confusion. Did this John Matton leave the Mass. area, move to Vermont for a short while before moving on to Ohio? I've seen historical references saying that he came from VT. Also, some of is early children may have been born in VT (e.g. Willis Matton, for one).

Thanks.

Jim

John Mattoon & Thankful Stebbins - Franklin County, Ohio

I have just discovered their tombstone in the West Pioneer Cemetery, Westereville, Blendon Township, Franklin County, Ohio. It shows John Mattoon died 9 June, 1843 in his 77th year and Thankful Stebbins died 31 Oct, 1861 in her 88th year.

Can anyone confirm that John Mattoon was the son of Philip Matton and Hannah Stratton from Northfield, Franklin County, Mass. Birth dates seem consistent with children of Philip and Hannah, although many of the listings show John and Thankful dying in Mass. I'm not sure that is true.

Also, that this Thankful Stebbins is the daughter of Moses Stebbins and Dorcas Hale from Wilbraham, Hampden Cty, Mass.

John and Thankful show up in the 1830 and 1840 census records in Blendon Twshp, Franklin Cty, Ohio. Thankful also shows up in the 1860 census - same location. I've also found land records and children's marriages that support that John and Thankful were in Franklin Cty, Ohio.

Appreciate any help in sorting this out. Thank you.

Jim
Hi,
I am looking for information on my relative Evangeline Mattoon, from Ireland, married around 1889 to a Casper Houck. They later moved to Ontario, Canada in 1903. If this sounds familiar to anyone I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

Re: Electa Mattoon

Richard,

I forgot to mention in my reply that my Orinda MATTOON moved to Jefferson county, Wisconsin in about the spring of 1844. I have a strong hunch that Orinda & Electa new each other and may have been related - cousins, or perhaps even sisters. I'm still trying to work out the details of Orinda's immediate family. The details are very sketchy, but based on 1820 census for Augusta township in New York, I believe Orinda's father might have been Charles.

Rick Nettesheim

Re: Electa Mattoon

Richard,

While researching my Mattoon family in the Stockbridge, Madison county, NY area, I came across an Electa Adaline MATTOON listed on the transcribed membership list for the Augusta Congregational Church. I believe this church was originally the Presbyterian Church of New Stockbridge, Madison county, NY (organized in Oct. 1818) which then changed its form of government on 15 July 1836 and became the Congregational Church of Munnsville, Madison county, NY. The only other bit of interesting information on the membership list entry for Electa is that in parenthesis, it says "now Foster" next to her name. Two other Mattoon females are listed as well - Mercy Mattoon (died 1848) & Lorinda [sic Orinda] Mattoon (now Goodrich). Orinda is one of my direct ancestors. This membership list was on file at the Fryer Memorial Museum in Munnsville, NY.

Perhaps this is the Electa you're looking for and gives you a little more info on where to look for her & what her married name was.

Best wishes,

Rick Nettesheim
