Thanks Robert! We had a GREAT visit with Mr. Crowe! He told some very interesting history, but still we cant tie our family from Canada to this Family. Our GGGrandfathers name was JOSEPH MAUDE, and it seems to be a rare name in the Maude family. We do know he came from Ireland, probably near Wexford, about 1820 to Canada. He had 2 Brothers here, Robert and Thomas. Thomas died in 1823 and left a will, of which we have a copy. Are you in Ireland, or do you know of anything I can use?

Thanks for your time
Ed Maude

My grandmother was born May Maude in 1898. her father Henry Maud was born in Yorkshire in 1869. His parents were Joseph Maude and Isabella Whitehead. I can't trace the family back any further but would be interested to hear from anyone who is from this branch of the Maude family.

Hi Lee

Your info is very interesting. I have traced my tree back to Joespth Maude b. 1801 (details scant). His son - Joseph - b. 1822 Rothwell, Yorks. Any more info on the family name would be most welcome as and when.

Regards

Chris Maude

It's been a long time since you posted this message, but have you found any of your descendants from Margery Maude at all, in the meantime. If not, you're in luck because I'm one of her cousins and I have her lines...well, at least the main line of descent :) And I also have her ancestry as well :)

Hi Lee,

Maude, Mawde, Mawhood, Maut, Maute, Mowit(t), and quite a few other derivations of the same name have been around for many years. Not all of the people with those names are related but a great majority of them are. The name originally comes from de Monte Alto, which was the original name. It was brought over to England around 1066-1070 by Eustace de Monte Alto, who was Baron and Senechal of the County of Chester under Hugh Lupus, the Earl of Chester. Eustace was Lupus's 2nd in command. Eustace had 5 sons and the later barons were descended from Ralph de Monte Alto, Eustace's 3rd son. Around the year 1080-1085, the name was changed to Montalt (or de Montalt) and it remained that right up until the early to mid 1400's when it seemed to morph into Maude and it's derivatives...although Mowit/Mouat seems to be a little earlier than this as it's a Scottish derivative that seems to have been hanging around since 1250-1300. The Maude family were, and are still, quite a prominent family in Yorkshire and a couple of other counties in England, but are mainly concentrated in Yorkshire. The present Viscounts Hawarden are from the family. Since you have family from Bradford, which I do myself (but not Maudes) that are Maudes, there is a possibility that you are related to the main family through a side branch, as they did have possessions and such in the area, plus they had fairly large families.

In any case, I hope that's been of help to you. If you're wondering why I have all that information about the Maudes, I'm a descendant of the main family, myself, and I've done quite a bit of research on the history of the family.

Hi Chris. I looked at that site, but it seems there were NO Maud/Maudes in the Republic of Ireland in 1880's. That may be that they left about 1800 because of the un-rest that was happening at that time! I find it, knowing how rare the name is, that there were that many Maud/Maudes there at any time. So I am assuming that the ones I find must be directly related to my family. It is just hard to find the exact family. I am going to try Wexford County, as that is where family history takes me. As well, we will stay for 1 night at Dundrum House, that was at one time owned by the Maud/Maudes after it was taken from the O'Dwyers. If you think of anything to try, could you let me know! My mail is hipassgramps@yahoo.ca
Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed

The first challenge is that a significant amount (most, according to some) records were destroyed in the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916. My maternal tree hits a brick wall for this reason. I reckon that parish records would fill significant gaps, provided you know the parish. For general ethnicity and geogpahy of the Maude surname, this is invaluable:
http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/ Just click 'search for a surname' and you're away. You'll see it's an English name, and concentrated today in the same area as in the late 1800s (circa Leeds/Bradford, Yorkshire).

I wish you well in this fascinating yet frustrating game, especially given Maude is such a rare surname! Any info you pick up would be welcome.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris! My name is Ed Maude and from the Irish Maude family. I am having some trouble, as I live in Canada, to tie the English and Irish together. I have read the Burkes, and see the family that went to Ireland, but is a little confusing, and after the move there is no data. I was wondering if you can throw any light on my situation. I will be travelling to Ireland in July, and will try to find what I can there, but this "blank" period, from the move to Ireland until I pick them up in Canada, in 1823, I have NO info.
I appreciate any light you can throw on this matter!
Thanks
Ed
