I was born in Ashtabula County Ohio, about an hour and a half from Cleveland. My mother Bonita Manes told me that HER mother Evelyn Grenter told her that (Evelyn's) grandfather William Maurer (married to Millie Davis) was a German in some "king's" service. He was a "horseman" who got into trouble and in the midst of his punishment stowed away to the U.S. where he married Millie Davis. That's all I know. Do you have a similar story?

My g grandfather was Joseph Marquard wife Christina. Joseph was brother to Philip, Jacob, Charles,Conrad and Bernard. They came to Cleveland before 1860. They can be found in the 1860 census under John Marquette(?). Your husband's g grandfather built the house on Warner road for his family. You probably have more info regarding this. Let me know if you would like more info. I am looking for info on the burial plot of John Marquette and wife Ursula and my g grandmother Christina.

Hi all,

I wonder if the genealogy on this family has been done already and if anybody knows William Maurer's father. One World tree says Jacob Maurer and Elizabeth Walker, but I wondered if that's true or not, and if anybody can go back any further, knows the name of the ship they came over on, etc.

If there are any direct descendants, I have a Civil War photo of Cap't William Maurer, b. 1833.

I just want to learn more about this fella's family; his daughter Elnora was my ancestor (married to Charley Schmucker) and there is more than a passing resemblance.

I do think it is just a coincidence since my Maurer family cam from Romania, not France and I also think that no Schenk's or Maurer's of my family were in America that early. There names would probably be more German sounding to, for example: Johann, Andreas, Katherina, Maria, but I do appreciate your help and it is possible that they are distant relatives.

Seeking Maurer and Schenk ancestors from Hetzeldorf

I am searching for ancestor, descendants or other relatives of Samuel Schenk and his wife Katherina Maurer. Samuel's first or middle name could have also been Andreas. He was born on April 26, 1860 in Hetzeldorf, Transylvania. Hetzeldorf is also called Eczel or Atel. Samuel died on January 02, 1915, possibly in World War I. Katherina Maurer was born June 30, 1868 in Hetzeldorf. Her name was spelled a variety of ways with a K or C She died on January 26, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had 4 sons Samuel, Daniel, Andrew, and Michael and 1 known daughter, Susane(spelled various ways)and possibly another daughter named Katherina or Kateline. Samuel, Katherina, Samuel jr, Susanne and Kateline or Katherina came to Ellis Island on the ship "Trave" from Bremen, Germany. They arrived on March 25, 1898 and later settled in Monaca, Pennsylvania, where Daniel was born on July 18, 1898. For reasons unknown, it is believed they moved back to Hetzeldorf and then some members of the family moved back to America. Daniel was is the Romanian army in World War I.

I don't think there is a connection, but the coincidence of the Maurer/Schenk was interesting, so I thought I would respond. My Great Grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Maurer B1866 in IL. His father was Joseph Peter Maurer B:France. His mother was Fanny Mae (born Veronica) Mosiman B:Ohio. Joseph Maurer died in his 40's in 1874 and his wife Fanny remarried to a William Schenk in Illinois/Ohio area in 1875.

I was looking for Benjamin F. Maurer in the 1880 census and can't find him. He would have been 14 and living with his mother and stepfather William Schenk. He had a brother William Maurer and sisters Elizabeth and Mary.

Joseph Maurer was born Alsace Lorraine area of France. Maurer and Schenk were both part of the large Mennonite population in the Ohio and Illinois area.

Re: Maurer in Ohio

Todd, what do you know of the Maure line from anywhere? the farthest i can get back is George Maure(1840) and wife Pauline who were my great great grandparents from Savoie, France. They *might* have originated in Marsielles. George died in a war and his widow sent thier only surviving son Celestine Maure to America in 1880's

any informatin you can give would be apreciated. The name is so rare that all of the Maures are bound to be not so distantly related.

Thank you,
Cristie Maure

Re: Maurers in Minnesota

Can you give approximate birth dates? Do you know which part of MN they settled? My great-great grandmother was a Maurer from Austria-Hungary, and I"m looking for info on her. Her first name was Catherine (or possibly Anna, according to one source), she born in 1864. She was married to Johann (John) Welsch in St. Paul and had 6 kids: John, Catherine, Anna Louise, Henry, Lillian (adopted) born between 1885-1893.
