Fortunata Picataggi was married to my great uncle Stefano Mauro. They came to the United States from Baucina in 1902. My Great Grandfather came two years later to live with them on Elizabeth Street. I think that they came with their 2 sons...Giuseppe and Francesco. Did Fortunata also have younger sisters Maria and Margharita that came with her?

I too am a Mauro. It was my maiden name and I took Mauro back after my Divorce. My father was Charles Mauro, son of Charles and Lillian. Charles is a family name that doesn't always appear on birth certificates, my father's did though. His father came to NY from Sicily and his mother, Lillian, came from the Ukraine. They had two sons, Charles and Eugene. We all lived in NY (Queens and Long Island) until my father retired from the NYCTA in 1969 and we moved to MI. Both of my parents are deceased, as is my Uncle Gene and my sister. I have very little information about my family other than: My Grandfather had a brother, whose name was also Gene, and another brother Frank (my uncles). Our family lived in NY, mostly on Long Island in later years. I currently reside in Colorado and am very curious about the Mauro family. I was born in 1954.

Stefano Mauro was Luke Mauro's oldest brother. Luke was my grandfather and Stefano was my great Uncle. Stefano did move to CA in the 1920's. Luke and his wife Bessie had two son's Dominic and Joseph Biaggo Mauro(my dad). When my dad was in the Navy during WWII, he stayed with the Stefano Mauro Family in CA.
I have tons of pictures from when my dad was in CA during the Navy staying with the Mauro's. I also have pictures of Stefano Mauro's family in Texas. My dad told many stories about his time in CA with his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. My dad passed away in 2000. We have always lived in Texas. Please let me know if you would like more detailed info. We are related.
Betty Jo Mauro-Williams

Her parents were Joseph Picataggi and Margaret Nicotra. If you have access to Carmela's death certifcate you can match her parents names there.

Good luck in your search
Stephanie

As I stated, I'm no relation but may be able to provide more information about them. I'll have to ask my mother what she remembers. There are no other photos of them in the album so I'm not sure how close of friends they were with our family. My mother's family was from Italy and New York and lived in Jackson Hieghts when it was a brand new neighborhood. I don't recall them knowing to many folks in New Jersey and most of the vacation photos reveal names of places in up-state New York, like Worchester. That's what makes the photo so odd. It does state that the address is Monmouth Jct. (short for Junction) NJ. and there are 9 children in the photo.
I'll have to talk to mom and see if she remembers there names and get back to you.
I have recently begun compiling a family tree, with the excuse that it is for my daughter's baby book. I have not found much out yet from the Mauro side of my family, so I was excited to find your post, "Calling all Mauro Ancestors."

My maiden name was Mauro, my grandfather was Joseph Anthony Mauro, he died before I was born. My great-grandfather's name was Emilio Mauro, and my great-great-grandfather was possibly Joseph or Guiseppe.

I don't know much more other than names at this point, but I look forward to learning more about any other Mauro's out there.

Mia

MAURO changed to MOORE

My great-grandfather, Ernestino MAURO (b. abt. 1873 either Asti Piedmont or Salerno, Italy) changed his name to Harry MOORE after immigrating in America. He settled in the Coal Regions. His 12 children also went by MOORE.

His parents: Giovanni MAURO and Maria BARONE also immigrated.

It's said he changed his name so it would sound more Americanized, but genealogy friends explain Moore is English for Mauro, being from Moorish invaders who went through Italy. I haven't resolved the question one way or another.

Fortunato Mauro from Baucina, Palermo, Italy - settled NY & NJ

I'm researching Fortunato Mauro B: about 1867 in Italy, D: April 1950 in New Jersey. He married a Catherine unknown who was born about 1866-67 (possibly Italy) who died in New Jersey in June 1956. I believe Fortunato immigrated to America in 1897, settling first in New York City and later in Bergen Co., New Jersey. Fortunato and Catherine's children were: Agatha (B:June 1887), Frank (B:1895/D:1964), Lawrence (B:1901/D:1979), and John (B:1906/D:1906). I would love to hear from anyone who knows about this Mauro line. I also very interested in learning more about Frank Mauro (son mentioned)and his wife Mary Minicone whom he married about 1922. I found Mary and two of her sisters (Elizabeth & Madeline) living in St. Agatha's Orphanage in Rockland Co., NY in 1910. I believe the girls had two brothers who may have been shipped "out west" on an orphan train, hoping someone would adopt them. I STRONGLY URGE ANYONE RELATED TO ANY OF THESE PEOPLE TO CONTACT ME.
