Gottlieb and Caroline were my gggrandparents and lived in Wisconsin. Gottlieb and Caroline came from Regenwalde, Pommern in 1856 with several children and settled in Dunn County, WI. I have info on family in USA but little from Germany. Do not have any information on siblings of either Gottlieb or Caroline but would love to have that information. Any assistance I can give, please ask! Ruth Maves Roeder

Maves Family of Dunn Co., WI

I have a lot of information on the Johann Gottlieb Maves family with some from the Yoecks family. My gr-gr uncle, son of Gottlieb lived to be 102 and had a great memory. He was William and used Mews as his surname. His father-in-law was a german minister and he would not let them marry until he changed his name to the german spelling. His reason was that if there were an inheritance coming from relatives in Pommern, they would be unable to find him. His daughter in law gave me some information that supposedly came from the family bible and she said it was gotten from Carl Maves who was a minister. The bible gave all the names and birth dates of Gottlieb and Caroline's children. the last line said that they were from Neu Schoenwalde bei Dramburg in Kreis Regenwalde, Pommern. I have a map of the Kreis of Regenwalde that shows an area next to the border with Kreis Dramburg that is Neu Schoenwalde. It does not appear to be a village. It is just south of the village of Schoenwalde which is south east of Labes. I am willing to share what I have. My grandfather was Otto and he, his brother William and sister, Esther married sisters and a brother. Their father was Fred and mother was Amelia Lenke also spelled Lanke, Lankey, Lenkey, Lanky or Lenky. I am related to the California Maves and there are also relatives in Oregon and Washington from this family. Would like to fined out more on the siblings of Gottlieb and Caroline.
No, we don't have any family history other
than back to her. She came to U.S. in the
late 1800's. It was told she was concerned
about having a german name so she changed it.
We don't know if this is true or not. We were
surprised checking surnames that there are
so many Maves since it was suppose to be a
made up name.

Most of the info I got was on line with the california branch of Maves. I shall see if I can get an address for you. Not sure if that is where I saw the immigration or if it was that posting you saw a bit ago. It was the same names as the ones I have.
I have some free on line for ten more days. I will see if anything comes up.
Isn't colfax still dunn co,. wi.
I saw many connections to the township Rock and the area by highway. Towards Eau Claire. Ther is a small book, I think written by French about the settlers in that area. There may have been a small bit about those married to Maves. at Menomonie reference area of the library. Not sure if interlibrary loan would work for that. E. can't think of it right now.
Husby used to be called Johnson in Norway.

I have not heard of Hecht but will ask my cousin about it. Do you know what port the Maves landed at when they came to America. I have Fred Yokes in Milwakee when he signed up for Army service in the Civil War. Also show he was married to a lady from Tennessee, Consau/Consad Bryant but don't know where he met her. Cannot find his marriage to my ggrandmother Anne/Anna Johnson. Know they lived in Colfax area.

Received your message. If you are researching and have Caroline Yoakes/Yokes/Jokes and Gotlib Maves in your family you connect with my family. As Caroline's brothers were Williams and Frederick Yokes/Jokes/Yoakes. Please check again. Thanks you for your prompt reply.

Maves Connections

My name is Larry Maves. I was doing an investigation into my ancestry when I came across the
Maves ancestry board and think I might have something to contribute to it.
I have only a sketchy knowledge of my linage due to very limited contact with my
relatives on my fathers side but this is what I do know.
My father’s name was Fredrick William Maves (nicknamed Willie), he died in 1975 at the age of
86 in Cambridge Ontario. His fathers name was Charles and his mothers name was Bertha. He
had 3 brothers that I know of. Samuel Maves, Herbert Maves and Eddie Maves.
My father was married twice. During his first marriage he lived in Welland Ont. had 3 children,
named Violet, Elsie and Wilfred (all deceased). Violet and Elsie did work in a textile plant in
Welland. And my father did help develop a collapsable boat using slats and a number of other
inventions such as an improved ski and steering system to be used on sleighs to skid lumber. My
mother still has the plans and patents for some of those inventions.
After the death of his first wife (I don’t know her first name) he remarried an Olive Fern
McPherson, 20 years his junior (my mother in Welland also had 3 children, Barbara Maves(born
in Welland now deceased) and Doreen (now Donnelly Morris) and myself Larry (both Born in
Galt, Ontario).
My mother is still alive (aged 83) and living at St Luke’s place in Cambridge. She kept in
touch with aunt Lilly (Sam’s wife) until a few years ago and only recently learned she had passed
away last summer.
I have had limited contact with relatives on my faters side. I have only met one of my
sept sisters (Elsie) once and have been to Pembroke once or twice as a very young and have
vague recollections staying with an Uncle Eddie at his farm. I do not know other living relatives
on my fathers side, but would be interested in tracking my ancestry..

I am hoping someone can help me with this - Charles A. Maves, b Jan 6 1884 in Germany to Wm Maves and Wilhamina Deering Maves. If these names sound familiar to anyone, please contact me. Charles was living in the Chicago area in 1920, but I cannot find where the family was in the 1900 census. Year of immigration appears to be 1890. Could this be a branch of the Canadian Maves?

Maves family from Vincennes

I have been trying to find more information on a Maves family who lived in Vincennes, IN. Father, Henry Maves, was born in Germany in 1832, and came to the US about 1854. He was married to Mary J. Evans in Richland Co, IL, had eight children, ran a small hotel in Lawrence Co, IL, then moved to Vincennes by 1880. Henry died in 1914, and we are hoping to find out who his parents were. I am not sure if he is connected to the Maves family who came in through Ontarion or not. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

I am Sid's daughter.
Have been communicating with Chris Maves, wife of Brad, Peter's son re: Maves genealogy. I got interested in this in 1973 and spent 5 weeks in Canada, Niagara Falls and went to Pembroke with Pa (Charles Samuel Maves) to stay at farm with Pete and Elmer. I asked a lot of nosey questions, took a lot of notes and met a lot of relatives. I have a gov't copy of Pa's birth certificate which lists him as Charles Samuel MEVES, b. 30 May 1891, Alice Fraser Township, Renfrew County. Son of William Meves and Adline Goldt.
Pa said his father, William Maves, came to Canada from Pommern,Germany with his parents and at least his older brother August. Other siblings were Vernon, Henry, Albert, Annie who married Crissy, Minnie who never married and Charlie, the youngest.
His mother, Adeline Gould, came to Canada from Germany with her parents (father: Fernand Gould. His mother's name was Retzlaff) and 7 brothers. Six of the boys remained in Canada. Fred went to the US. could he be the father of the elusive Barney Maves of WI??
Chris has a ships passenger list with the right names and close dates.
We need to all get together and compare notes
Feel free to email with questions and answers

My cousin in law (?!), Chris Maves, provided me with a copy of passenger list for the bark Mississippi, Bremen to New York, 10 June 1856. Passengers #144-149 were: Joh Gott Maves, 34, Male, Farmer, from Prussia going to Chicago; Joh Christ Carl Maves, 29, fem; Carl, 7, male, Friedrich, 5, male; August, male, 3 year 6 mos., Wilhelm, male, 11 mos. They were headed for Chicago.
Are these the Maves who went to Ontario? My great, great grandfather was Friedrich but the dates aren't right.
Does this help you? It comes from National Archives and Records Admin, Film M237, Reel 163.
Good luck!
