Howdy everyone named Maxey... I live in Illinois. My grandparents of old originated from Kentucky and from there originated from Virginia. The rest of my lineage is traced back to Wales, England. I have always been interested in our lineage. True story... I was vacationing in Fort Meyers, FL. and was checking into my hotel, and was told my room was already claimed by a James Mark Maxey. I was curios because this guy was from Virginia or Kentucky... can't remember right now, anyway I called the guys room and his wife answered I explained what was going on and the guy would not even come down to meet me. I was so pissed!
Anyways... i hope the rest of you are not like this guy. Oh... I think we were even the same age! We stayed there the rest of the week, and my wife and I kept looking around for some dude that might look like me. Never saw anyone that ugly! :)

May I join too? I'm a descendant of Edward & Susannah Maxey through my paternal grandmother's side. I was reading the Maxeys of Virginia book by Edythe Maxey Clark and notice that Jesse Maxey was a private in the American Revolution. I've already applied for DAR membership through another ancestor, but to the extent I can link up with another, that'd be great.

Judith Patterson
judith.patterson@sbcglobal.net

John Maxey Connection to Mahlon Dickens

In the 1880 Census there are four stepchildren listed as living with Mahlon Dickens and his wife Maggie. They are John, Annie, Ida and Elizabeth Maxey.

I am trying to connect Maggie from Maxey to Dickens. Is it possible she went by another name? I assume she was married previously to Dickens. Does anyone know to who? I have also been trying to determine if she went by Mary Ellen Roberts or Mary Ellen Garretson. Either as a married name or a maiden name. I am also wondering if there is a connection to Barnett.

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Thank you!
Karen Maxey Biondi

just came across your information. I am a distant relation to the Maxey family who emigrated to Carbondale and Forest City area of Northeast PA from Wales. My paternal paternal great grandmother was related by way of the Harris family. Outside of Forest City there is a cemetery that I don't know the name of that has graves for that part of the Maxey family. Their relative George Wendell Maxey was the District Attorney of Lackawanna County i believe in the 1920's then went on to become the Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court until his death sometime in the 1940's. Have been unable to find his gravesite but did find his brother Benjamin's outside of Scranton, PA in the Shady Lane Cemetery in Chinchilla, PA (South Abington Township). Would like to share any information that i may have with anyone else. Hope to hear back from you or any other family connection. Nina Serfass

Enjoy hearing from you. I have never heard any stories growing up about that. According to my father (Charles H. Beynon, Sr.) his grandparents Mary Jane Harris Beynon and William Beynon lived on Eynon Street in Scranton. Dad's parents Willard Beynon and Margaret Leuthold Beynon lived in Scranton before moving to Glenburn Township in approx. 1944. As for Mary Jane's siblings I don't have too much information except for the charts i use that were done back in 1972 by a Mary Louise Harris Wilkinson. She is the daughter of Alfred J. Harris and Evelyn Jones. Alfred J. Harris is the son of John Maxey Harris and Emma Kullman. John Maxey Harris is a brother to Mary Jane Harris Beynon. Mary Jane also had a brother Daniel who according to this info was killed between tram cars at Bellevue breaker, Scranton PA while young ( i have no dates for anything). She also had a sister Anne who was married to a Joseph Hart. She committed suicide while young. At least these charts have given me something to work with. My dad doesn't remember alot and my grandparents died 20 years ago. It's so nice for me to be in contact with someone who can help me fill in some blanks i hope. Nina Beynon Serfass

Published in the US by the University of Scranton Press. Editorial office: University of Scranton, Scranton, PA 18510

According to the information that i started with that was compiled back in 1973 by Mary Louise Harris Wilkinson this is how i fit in. My paternal grandfather was Willard Beynon. His mother was Mary Jane Harris prior to marrying William Beynon. Mary Jane's parents were Richard M. Harris and Elizabeth Maxey. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Maxey who was born in S. Wales and died in Carbondale, PA. His wife was named Mary according to my info. John was the son of William Maxey and Jane Jones. John was the brother to Geo. Maxey that was married to Mary Daniels and George and Mary were the grandparents of George W. Maxey. Hope this information helps. Also wanted to let you know that a few years back my brother bought me a book by a William D. Jones. It's called Studies in Welsh History, Wales in America, Scranton and the Welsh 1860-1920. George W. Maxey is briefly mentioned in this book mostly as being one of the prominent lawyers in Scranton in the 1920's. Not sure where he found the book but can try to find out if you are interested. Nina Beynon Serfass
Nice to hear from you. Will get back to you with further information. My paternal grandfather Willard Beynon's mother was Mary Jane Harris. Through her is my connection to the Maxey family. As a child i was given a copy a family tree for the Maxey/Harris families. Must get back to you. Not in reach at the moment. In addition, in the Saturday Feb. 28, 2009 edition of the Scranton Times-Tribune was printed the obituary of Mary Maxey Karstens. According to the obituary she was the daughter of the late Lillian D. Maxey and Chief Justice George W. Maxey. If i remember correctly Lillian Maxey's maiden name was Danvers. The obituary states that Mary Maxey Karstens died Feb. 7 in Lantana, Florida. I did save a copy of the obituary if you would like a copy. Nina Beynon Serfass

I am graeful for this reply. It interests me a great deal that you are descended from John Maxey, whose family seems suddenly to drop out of sight in the mid-19th century. I think he, his wife, and children appear in the 1850 census, but not thereafter. Nor did I find John Maxey or his wife in the Maple Wood Cemetery in Carbodale, where I would have expected them to be buried. John and Mary Vipen Maxey's son Daniel went West in a big hurry in mid-century or thereabouts, and I have maintained an enjoyable e-mail correspondece with distant cousins of mine who descend from Daniel Maxey. So any additional light you can throw on what happened to this branch of our family would be appreciated. David Maxey

The son of Paul and Margaret Maxey, I was born in Scranton almost seventy-five years ago. Like some others in our family, I have had a career in the law, as a Philadelphia lwayer, now retired. We are remote cousins since your grandmother and I were, I think, third cousins, sharing as common ancestors William and Jane Maxey, who arrived with their children from Wales in the early 1830s and settled in northeastern Pennsylvania. Please let me know if you would like more family background since this is not the whole story by any means. David W. Maxey

William and Jane Maxey are buried in the Maple Wood Cemetery in Carbondale, PA, along with Chief Justice Maxey's parents. (The chief justice is not buried there, and I am not sure where he is buried.) I would be interested in knowing how you fit into the Maxey family tree through the Harris connection.
David W. Maxey

Augustus is my great, great, grandfather, his son Millard Maxey (my great grandfather), and his son John Maxey (my grandfather). I was wondering if anyone here is related to Augustus and where I can find more information on his family and farther back. Augustus' father was Booz or Boaz Maxey and his father was Jermiah Maxey.

What I really want is any links or books that I can find for my side of the family. I am curious as to which relatives were in all of our wars, besides the Civil War which Augustus was in, even all the way back to our Revolutionary War.

I actually have lots of questions and I am new to doing this research. I don't know what the best sites are or the best places to look. I am assuming it's going to cost me a lot of money but I really want to know.

I am hoping someone here can help me. I fear I am losing touch with my ancestors which I don't want to do. I have been doing Victorian Dances where the dancers dress in 19th Century clothing, etc.

Please, please help me!
I was mentioned in the posted obituary for Mary Maxey Karstens who recently passed. I am her granddaughter. I'm sitting at the national archives and came across these posts. I'm interested in any information on the maxeys and I really dont know anything about the family beyond my great grandfather George Wendell Maxey and wife Lillian Danvers.

Maxey GA located in Oglethorpe Co, east of Athens. Jesse Maxey was my grandfather, and don't know much more. Brothers left the VA area, came to GA, & 1 or 2 went on to Miss. Haven't contacted any others anywhere, & do not know any from your area. Town named after Jesse's father or grandfather. The cousin with info died, & if anything written down, I don't know about it. Good luck. S
