Tom,

I hope the following information will be useful. I have the following on your line:

Direct Descendants of Valentine Mayo

1 Valentine Mayo b: 1670 d: 05 Oct 1716 in , Middlesex Co., Virginia Sex: Male

"Valentine Mayo's earliest known record dates back to May 7, 1686 when he was witness to a will in Middlesex, VA. According to one source, Valentine original came from Barbadoes and bought a tract of land in Middlesex Co., VA in 1706. Valentine was believed to be a tailor and/or a sailmaker and reportedly killed by Indians.

It is likely said that Sarah, wife of Jon Brooks was Valentine's sister. On June 5, 1711, Valentine and wife maed a deed to 'our beloved couzon' Jon Brooks (b. Dec. 4, 1684 and son of Jon and Sarah Brooks) for 39 acres patented by Valentine Mayo in 1702.

April 25, 1702, Valentine acquired 39 acres of land in Middlesex adjacent to land of Thomas Obrisell dec'd John Stamper dec'd and Henry Tugwell; by Michlburrough;s SW, just above the horse bridge, on land of John Bourke, dec'd. Trans WM Watt.

September 2, 1704, Middlesex Co., VA: Valentine Mayo acquired land from John Stone and his wife May.

Since Valentine Mayo died intestate, his property descended to his son James Mayo.

From: KrKlamm@aol.com (Ken)Here is a "rough" translation of the very hard-to-read estate inventory of Valentine Mayo from 1717. Any significance to the "plaid" that is included here? I thought plaid was mainly used in Scotland but maybe not.

For those of you who haven't seen the 1963 Virginia Genealogist article on the Family of James Mayo (son of Valentine), I have cut and pasted below the first two or three pages. This is from the April-June 1963 issue, volume 7:
by Mrs. Bert Harter
Doylestown, Ohio

A father with eleven sons in the American Revolution would surely be a record. The Richmond Standard of 18 July 188O published an article about The family of William Mayo, the surveyor, by the well known historian Alexander Brown in which he stated: "among other Mayo families of Virginia John Mayo of Hanover is said to have had 10 brothers in the Revolutionary Service records acceptable to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution have been found for eight of the sons, three sons-in-law and one grandson~in~law of James Mayo.
No material has been printed on this large and interesting family and while the records given here are not complete, it is hoped that this publication w:ill be of value to many. James Mayo had children born for thirty years and grandchildren for more than seventy-five years. The duplication of names, multiple marriages, other Mayo families, confusion with May and Mays, migrations, and the loss of many county records have all been problems. Marriages have not been assigned without reason; lacking this they appear as unplaced. It is likely that some of the granddaughters married again; this has not been investigated thoroughly. The records of North Carolina were not searched. Material from Fairfield District, South Carolina, was contributed by Niss Nary Riley, Anderson, S.C.

Many county records, as well as the Register of Christ Church parish, Middlesex County, are extant; however, they are not complete. When these county records were microfilmed all the loose papers were included and an index was prepared by the Virginia State Library. Prior to this time the early records of Middlesex County were seldom searched because of their poor condition. The only extant colonial record books of Caroline County are the Order Books. It is hoped this article has a minimum of errors, but corrections and additions are welcomed.

James Mayo was born 11 Dec. 1711 in Middlesex County, Virginia, son of Valentine Mayo and his wife Ann, as shown by a deed from James to William Davis:

The parentage of Valentine Mayo has not been determined. On 7 May 1686 he was a witness to the will of Jonathan Brooks and it is likely that Sarah, wife of Jonathan Brooks, was his sister for on 5 June 1711 Valentine and Ann Mayo made a deed~ to "our beloved couzon" Jonathan Brooks (born 4 Dec. 1684, son of Jonathan and Sarah) for the 39 acres of land patented by Valentine Mayo in 1702. Nothing was found in the records to indicate a relationship with the John Mayo who died testate in Middlesex County 5 March 1723, or with the William Mayo of Isle of Wight County.
Valentine Mayo married 14 Nov l7l0 Ann, widow of James Jordan whose will of l709 mentioned son-in-law [step-son] Henry Burk, a minor. James Jordan married 25 Feb. 1704/510 Ann, widow of John Burk who died prior to 5 Jan. 1701/2 when his eldest son Thomas sold land patented by John Burk, a part of' which had been sold by John and his wife Mary Burk, the present deed providing that Ann, widow of John Burk, shou1d enjoy her full third of the land as if the deed had not; been made.11

Ann had married John Burk some time after 18 Jan.1686/7 the date of death of' his wife Mary (Tuggle) Burk.
Valentine Mayo died in Middlesex County 5 Oct 1716 and the widow Ann Mayo died in Caroline County 1743, her will being presented at July 1744 Court by executor James Mayo and proved by the witnesses, Robertt; Williamson and John Williamson, who were also sureties on his bond.

James ~ married first Ruth ---- and she died 16 Feb. l734, four days after the birth of son Valentine. Some time prior to 1736 James Mayo married second, probably in Caroline County, Martha Williamson16 and she was the mother of his other children. James3 and Martha Mayo lived in Middlesex County until 1740 when they joined their relatives in Caroline County. Prior to this, Henry Burk, the half-brother of Jarnes and Robert Williamson had both moved to Carolino County
After the death of' his mother, James Mayo and Robert Williamson III (who was born 31 July 1722) journeyed back to Middlesex County where on the same day, 20 Jan9 1743/4, they both sold inherited lande.!They then proceeded to Goochland County where on 20 March 1743/4 Robert Williamson purchased land, the deed being witnessed by James Mayo. On 17 July 1744 James Mayo of' Caroline County purchased land in Goochland on Castle Branch ~
He held this 413 acre tract until 25 June 1773 when he sold it to John Shelton, having on 11 Nov.1772 as James Mayo of Goochland County, purchased land in that part of Albemarle County on the north side of the south fork of Cunningharn Creek which In 1777 was cttt off to form Fluvanna County.
James Mayo died there 13 March 1776 and his widow Martha Mayo died 27 Aug. 1794. His will, dated 21 Feb. 1776 and proved March 1777, was recorded in Albemarle County, but the records at administration are in Fluvanna County.23 He provided that his wife should enjoy the whole estate during her widowhood, left to his son Joseph 100 acres, the land whereon he was then living, adjoininc John Hancock, Robert Napier and William Bradshaw, gave his daughtor Martha "add a Negro girl Jane, bed and furniture, his daughter nary flayc a Negro girl Sarah, bed and furniture, his two granddaughters Martha Williamson Williams and mary Ann Williams one equalpart between them, his son Benjamin a bed and furinture, his son Stephen a bed and furniture and divided the remaining estate among his sons Valentine Mayo, James Mayo, John Mayo, Robert Mayo, Jacob Mayo, Williamson Mayo, Joseph Mayo, Thomas Mayo, Richard George Mayo, Benjamin Mayo and Stephen Mayo. John Williamson and his wire were named as executors and the will was witnessed by John Hancock, Benjamin Hancock1 Lewis (X) Hancock and William Bradshaw. John Williamson and Martha Mayo qualitied as executors.
