Hello Jill,

Hello Jill. I’m sorry for the loss of your mother. How wonderful if your Januarius McAdam would turn out to be the one I have been looking for.

Unfortunately, our data isn't matching up - yet. I know nothing about my ancestor's brother Januarius McAdam after he left home, only his date of birth and his siblings names.

The name Januarius seems quite strange to us in this day and age, but was not uncommon in the 1800s. And you know McAdams: it’s not quite Smith, but it is quite commonplace even today.

I’m curious where your great great grandfather Januarius was either born or grew up, or if you know anything about his siblings. If you don’t know, perhaps your aunt Shirley might know something about her great-grandfather.

Best Regards
Maureen

I have been there also. I am related to Ephraim's brother Sooter and have a lot of information on the family back to Ireland and Scotland. As far as I can remember, Ephraim only had two wives; you may be thinking about his son Ephraim. Ephraim and his mother (Nancy) Anne Armstrong McAdams and father John McAdams helped found Williamsburg and were original lot-holders in the town before John and Nancy went on to help found Columbia in the early 1800's.
Let me know of you need any further info - I have spent about 15 years researching this.

Dan McAdams
mac8429@comcast.net

Hi Kelly I saw your message on Ancestry. Josiah McAdams Was my gggrandfather he was born in Tennessee,in 1823, he was 27 in 1850 Tennessee census, but married my gggrandmother Christiana Demby White Atkinson in 1861 in Hunt Co. Texas. I found Their marriage notice, but in 1850 he was married to Susan ? and I cant find a marriage record for them. I dont know who his parents are but I suspect they may be hugh and maria bagley, but have no proof. What a big puzzle. I cant find any info on the whites or Atkinsons either but I would appreciate any info on McAdams that you find and I will do the same.

There are variations of this tree online, and I'm hoping that someone could lead me to sources for the following information.

Generation No. 1

1. James1 McAdams was born 1730 in NC.. He married Rebecca. She was born Abt. 1732 in Orange Co. NC..

Child of James McAdams and Rebecca is:
+ 2 i. James Joseph2 McAdams, born 1755 in VA.; died 22 Sep 1840 in St Clair, Alabama.

Generation No. 2

2. James Joseph2 McAdams (James1) was born 1755 in VA., and died 22 Sep 1840 in St Clair, Alabama. He married Jamima Murray 1771. She was born 20 May 1750, and died 19 Aug 1841 in Bargow Co. GA. (Bur. Old Cass Cem..).

Is there a source for the birth and death dates of Sarah Burton who married Hilliard McAdams?
Is there a source for the death date of 1852 for Samuel McAdams who died in Bowie County, Texas? (I know he was there in 1850. I have all the census records for the family.)

I've researched the line down from Hilliard but I'm having a terrible time trying to locate proof for the 3 generations before him. I'd love to be pointed in the right direction.

Keeping my fingers crossed, Kelly

He migrated with his parents about 1825 from Lincoln Co to Henderson Co., TN. Henderson Co records have been destroyed prior to 1880, therefore; looking for family Bible or other documents which prove lineage and/or marriage.

I'm from a line of McAdams that went west.

On 1 Jan 1905 when Margaret Ione "Dinah" was 23, she married *****William Jackson McADAMS. Born on 28 Oct
1874 in Bristol, Ellis Co., Texas. William Jackson died in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, on 8 Jul 1943; he was 68.
Occupation: Stationary engineer in a Dept. store.

According to the 1920 Federal census, William J. is living at 1240 N. Clark St. in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois
with wife, Ione, and son. Conrad. All three of them were born in TX.

On the 1930 census for Chicago, I find a
William J. McAdams about the right age, born in TX and divorced. Living with him is a son, George C.

George C McAdams Married Louella Staley and moved to Oregon, Thier children were:
William Jackson
Paul
Virginia

The family was not close, Paul moved to KY
and Virginias where abouts are unknown, it is belived that she married and had children.

My Grandmother Louella was not an easy person to get along with. My father is William J McAdams, he had three children with his first wife Darlen Kelly, those children are Sherrie Lynn McAdams, Mike Allen and Jana Marie.

After his divorce and bitter relations with his mother who claimed to be a devout catholic wo was against divorce, he remarried Donna Dobson of Oregon City and had two more children myself, Julie and Marci.

I've it a brick wall. I can't find anyone past the William Jackson that wed Ms Tilley.

William McADAMS, Alton, Illinois 1835-1895

PROF. McADAMS DROWNED ~ His Boat, Dog and Clothing Found on Eagle Nest Island. ~ Search Party Sunday Found Evidences That He Is Drowned...The Body Found Monday.

Prof. William McAdams, Alton's eminent geologist, left his home last Thursday morning in his sail boat accoutred for a hunting expedition on the Illinois river. Prof. McAdams went to join a party of young men who were camping out. among them being his son, Mr. Clark McAdams. The young men were greatly disappointed at hi« non-arrival, and Clark came home Friday night. The first question he asked was why his father had not kept his promise and joined them. The question immediately aroused the fears of the family who knew of his departure Thursday morning. Messrs. Clark and John McAdams, greatly perplexed and fearful over the circumstances, went up Saturday morning in search of their father. At Clifton they found the sail boat. It had been caught drifting down the river. The photographic outfit and the Professor's coat and hat were found inside the boat. The grave doubts and fears for his welfare were strengthened by this. The boat had passed Clifton in due time on Thursday and the young men immediately continued the search.

Next they visited James Powrie, better known as "Scotch Jimmy," who lives on the island bearing the latter name. From "Scotch Jimmy" it was ascertained that Prof. McAdams had landed on the island with his dog and had spent considerable time resting and talking during the noon hour. At 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon the Professor set sail in his boat.

A fisherman on the Illinois shore, opposite Eagle Nest Island, had seen his boat at a distance and had witnessed a peculiar landing of the boat. After sailing up stream the boat suddenly tacked and made a quick dart for the island. The landing was made on the north side precisely as it should be made, and the fisherman paid no further attention to the occurrence. Messrs. Clark and John McAdams visited Eagle Nest Island and found the Professor's dog sitting on the bank where he had undoubtedly been for over two days. The marks of the prow of the boat showed plainly in the sand, the boat having struck with a considerable shock. On the bank were marks of his foot prints and of the dog.. The poor animal had kept a faithful watch and had not strayed from the point where the boat landed as evidenced by the wallowed places in the sand.

The young men became satisfied that their father had met with a mishap. Nevertheless they spent the whole night in a vain search of the island, calling his name and scouring every nook. Disappointed and heartsore they returned Sunday morning and gave out the grave news. It spread rapidly and owners of Illini yachts immediately offered their services and lost no time in getting the boats ready. Mr. H. M. Schweppe in the Nina, left in the morning and went over the ground, visiting the island. They found only the traces as found by the young men. The excitement spread and at noon the yacht Glad Tidings took out a large search party. They, too, visited the islands and picked up all information possible. The yachts and searchers returned last night having been unsuccessful.

BODY FOUND.

At 5 o'clock a. m., Monday, Messrs. Charles, Edmond and Wesley Beall, steamed up their yacht, the Glad Tidings, and took with them Messrs. John McAdams, Eugene Gaskins, William Fluent and Ray Hudgens and started for Eagles Nest Island, the supposed scene of the drowning of Prof. McAdams. After making a thorough search of the vicinity the party became convinced that Mr. McAdams had lost his life there. They found where he had landed on the Illinois side of the island, and then followed the Island to the other extremity, and around to the Missouri side, where he again landed and carried a number of articles from the boat, among which was a photographer's outfit. The dog was also found at the same spot yesterday. The Glad Tidings party then were reasonably sure that Mr. McAdams was dead, and they made preparations to search for his body. They came to the conclusion from footprints seen on the shore that he had hastily ran for the place where e had deposited some of his goods to the shore. They believed that his boat bad gotten loose from the shore and that he either wadded out to try to recover it, or attempt reaching the other shore. Acting on the conclusion they prepared a line with hooks, and dropped it into the slough and had only proceeded a short distance dragging the line, until the hooks took hold of something. Pulling the line to the surface the form of Mr. McAdams was revealed, one of the hooks having taken hold in his hand. He had waded out 20 or 30 feet in shallow water, and then encountered a "stop-off" twenty feet deep and was drowned there. The body was taken on board the Glad Tidings and was brought to this city about noon time. The body was found about 10:30 o'clock. Mr. McAdams' watch stopped at 9:15 o'clock, and as he was seen on Eagle Nest Island at dusk Thursday by some fishermen it is supposed that the accident occurred at 9:15 or shortly before, although it might have occurred at that hour Friday morning. This, however, is improbable, as there is a house boat immediately opposite, the occupants of which declare they would have seen him drowning if it had occurred during day light. The body was placed in charge of Undertaker Howell, who carried it to his rooms where it was prepared for burial.

A Short Sketch of the Eminent Geologist and Archiologist.

In a short sketch of the Hon. Wm. McAdams it is impossible to give due credit to the genius which merited him the attention of scientists all over the world. He was born with the love of his science instilled within him and in a life of intense activity and long study he perfected himself as a scientist, and fitted himself for the first rank in his profession. He was looked upon by scientists in every part of America as an authority, and his judgment was often sought by others who were likewise recognized as authorities.

William McAdams was born in Middletown, Ohio, in December, 1835. Nurtured in a region famed for its rich antiquities, he cultivated a love for his later profession. When but a lad he fitted up the room which he occupied with his brothers, with a collection of skeletons, skulls, snakes and uncanny fossil hones which immediately gave him entire possession of the apartments. Finally came a crisis. Young William refused to follow a trade and his father destroyed his fair collection of relics, as they then were to him. William was sent away to a private school where he devoted his entire attention to a thorough and accurate knowledge of geology. He gave every spare moment to recreation with his shovel and hammer in search of the knowledge the earth held in store in the shape of fossils of different times and ages.

At the age of 20, William joined a party of gold hunters bound for the Rocky mountains and the slopes of California. While his company of associates spent their entire time in searching for auriferous rocks, the subject of this sketch was storing information of mountain stratas and the peculiar study of "dips."

In 1858 he returned loaded down with trophies of the far West and located in Jersey county close to the town of Jerseyville. Here in the course of a short time he married Miss Annie E. Curtiss, the daughter of a well-to-do Southerner. From this time on he prosecuted the science of geology and archaeology as a profession and a means of livelihood. Jersey county was stored with remains of the Mound-Builders, Indian relics, fossils of all ages, and presented a fine field for his attaining a complete collection of the fossils of many ages. He soon became prominent in the county, being a gentleman of literary attainments and a writer of ability, and was chosen as Jersey county's representative in the Illinois Legislature. He cared but little for public life and at the expiration of his term retired from politics. He came to Alton in 1881, declaring that the Bluff City was the grandest location in the world to study nature. "Why," said he, "Go up the river from Alton and every turn in the river is a new chapter in nature." He meant that the stratas of the different times, ages and periods were visible in a regular procession from this city north.

In 1885 he was elected a member of the Missouri Academy of Science and later was honored by this body by being selected as their representative to the National Academy of Science. Here ho attracted the attention of eminent scientists from every part of the country and was highly honored at their convention in Boston. Prof. McAdams was chosen as superintendent of the geological and archaeological exhibition at the World's Fair in New Orleans and took with him a magnificent collection of classified antiquities covering an unusual scope. He sold his collection for $12,000 to a scientist in Sacramento, Cal. Upon his return from Now Orleans he prepared for Yale College a rare collection of anti-glacial times, the finest of the few in existence, and consisting of a classified collection of fish teeth and bones, he formed the acquaintance of Prof. Dana, of Yale, Superintendent of the Department of Natural History and the oldest member of the faculty. His next collection secured in this vicinity was disposed of to Monticello Seminary. Prof. McAdams' collections are among the finest now in existence in the country. Just before 'the death of Illinois' great State Geologist, Prof. Worden, that gentleman said: "There is but one man in Illinois who I would care to have fill my place as a worthy successor: Prof. McAdams, of Alton." He did not receive the appointment however. His recent honors and achievements were gained at the World's Fair. He was appointed superintendent of the archeological exhibit and continued in charge until the close of the fair. Ho was then employed by the State to publish a report of the archeological exhibit. After much hard work he finished this undertaking, in an exhaustive report completed about ten days ago.

Prof. McAdams' histories of antiquities in Madison county are subjects of deepest interest. His book on "Records of Ancient Races" received recognition all over the world and he received exchanges from far off Egypt and from the continent of Europe. Often he was called upon for opinions on scientific subjects by eminent men all over the world. He has left a name for himself and an impress on science which will remain a lasting monument to him.

[Alton Evening Telegraph, Alton, Illinois,4-18-1895]
Transcribed by Karima Allison

Hello Cindy
My name is Larry McAdams and I am also looking for more info on Samuel McAdams (who his father was, etc). He is my GGGG-Grandfather. I descended from his son Samuel Jr. Some say his father was John, others say it was Alexander. I noticed on one of your posts, that you say his father was John. Through what resource did you get this info?
I would appreciate it if you would contact me at my e-mail address.........larrymac@peoplepc.com or phone 505-298-3359
Thank You Larry McAdams

I too would like to say thank you for the information. I am researching Sarah McAams born in 1790 SC and marrying Thomas Brannan in SC. I have an 1850 showing her with her children Henry, Thomas, & James living in Mississippi. If any of this sounds familiar I would greatly appreciate knowing who her parents were.
