Tonika,

I was raised in CT and am an African American descendant of the McAlpine family. The largest number of African American McAlpines that I am aware of trace their lineage to slaves from several counties in Alabama (Greene, Hale, etc...). Generally they take their name from one of several grandsons of Alexander McAlpine. There are African American McAlpine family reunions in NY, Ohio and next year (2010) one in Indiana. I have studied the Greene county McAlpines from the plantation of Solomon McAlpine in great depth. If you are interested in the lore surrounding how we got our surname and why it is spelled the way it is, shoot me an email @ wilsonphotography@msn.com

Hi Sylvia, thanks for that. I thought I had left a Gt out too but she is my Gt Gt Grandmother. Robert Watt is my main problem in tracing back - I have got the birth certs of their children and found him in a few Censuses and he was a pottery painter at the Bo'ness Pottery. I am related to them via their daughter Cecilia who married Andrew Ferrier and their son John was my Grandfather. I too have a death in the Poorhouse the same as you, and I am pretty sure it is him as his son George was living in the same area of Colinton.

Kind regards, Jill

I have in my possession an Order of Business, Rules of Order, By-Laws and Membership booklet for the Martha Washington Chapter No. 10, Order of Eastern Star from Lonaconing, MD. It presumably belong to Miss Mabel McAlpine, who signed the inner flyleaf dated February 28, 1913. With it is another booklet of the By-laws from the same Chapter with Officers listed as of 1960. In checking, I find that Mabel was born in 1894 and was eventually married to William Duckworth.

I would be happy to give send these booklets to anyone connected to Mabel or the Eastern Star Chapter. I have no particular interest in them and would like to see them go to someone who does.

Re: Robert McAlpine, Lambton Co. ON

I am helping a friend of a friend research the property she lives on in Warwick Township. The property was at one time the property of Daniel and Susan McAlpine. I have an aerial picture of the property ( from the 1950s) as well as the land records going back to the Canada Company. The property is Lot 4, Concession 8, Warwick Township. I can send you a copy of these if you wish.
I also began to do some research on your family. I belong to St. Christopher's Catholic Church and helped write the history book for our parish. I recognized the family name from that. They were one of the first Catholic families in the area.
I would like to submit your family information to the Warwick historical group that is presently working on a book about Warwick township. They had no information on your family so I thought I would pass along what I had pieced together through census and cemetery records.
I would appreciate any information you could provide or correct. I was wondering if Ellen Quinlan O'Connell might be a sister to your Susan Quinlan McAlpine. They are buried adjoining plots in the same row in Beechwood Cemetery. Daniel McAlpine transfers 20 acres of his land to James O'Connell (Ellen's husband).
The information I have found follows this letter.
N. McALPINE b. 1835 IRE>PA>KS

N. McALPINE, speculator, is a native of the "Emerald Isle," and was born near Belfast, April 5, 1835, and received his early education in this city. When quite a youth his parents immigrated to the United States and settled at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the subject of this sketch was employed as a messenger in the Savings Bank & Trust Company, and afterward served seven years in the Exchange & First National Bank, and received a through training in the routine of banking.

Desiring a more active business he emigrated westward, at the opening of Kansas Territory joining his uncle, John McALPINE, (one of the founders of Wyandott), in April, 1857. He and B. Washington built the first saw mill and flour mill in Wyandott city. In 1866 he was elected city treasurer of Wyandott, and in 1867 county treasurer, and re-elected in 1871 and 1873, and was appointed by the county commissioners to fill a vacancy, serving as treasurer of Wyandott county seven years, and has held other city offices. He was one of a party who discovered the natural gas well and mineral waters since so celebrated for its curative qualities.

He has manifested commendable public spirit in the growth and prosperity of the town, and taken an active part in every public improvement. He is a man of excellent character, and his official record is without a stain. He married Miss Maria WALKER, daughter of Joel WALKER, in May, 1866. Their family consists of two children: Robert and Jessie.

Source: "The History of Jackson County, Missouri" published in 1881

(I have no connection with this family; but, if you found this to be of value, please let me know.)
neirbo

Re: McAlpine's in New Haven CT area

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone already responded to you or not.
I will tell you what I know. The orginal name was actually Scottish in origin, even though McAlpines, MacAlpines lived in Scotland and Ireland. The original spelling I believe was MacAlpiol with variations. As time went on the name acquired various spellings. Even among first cousins in my family some spell it Mc others Mac. Robert McAlpine was, I believe an affluent white, slave owning planter in Virginia. In the 1840's he either had a son, owned a son of a slave or both, as you know it's complicated due to the very nature of slavery, and the boy named William McAlpine was sold to another relative at the age of eight upon Robert McAlpine's death.I guess the family was dividing up the property after Robert McAlpine died. He was separated from his mother. William later settled in Alabama and was a minister who and founded what would later become Selma University. His early records list him as a mulatto ans also his wife and children. Later records identify him as 'B" for black.
There were many African American McAlpnes in the
This is not to say that there are not others just an example. The African American McAlpines in the Connecticut area, are in many cases related to those in the same area with the spelling MacAlpine.Sometimes very closely related and aware of it. I hope this helps Tonika. Let me know.
I have cousins from california and colorado through Hartford and relatives in Alaska. Most have the name McAlpine or MacAlpine and some other name through marriage.
As for the carribean, i am sure that many brached off to other places. I'd love to learn more about that myself.

PJ MacAlpine
PJMacJam@yahoo.com

Mary Ann HOWARD m. John McALPINE

I am looking for information on John McAlpine who married Mary Ann Toles Howard. A court record in Martin County, Indiana shows that in 1868 they were married. The court record in 1874 shows her with the name of Howard again. The report also says that until lately she had been a resident of state of New York. Records shows that on April 12, 1871 Abraham heirs sold lots and in Martin County, Indiana and she is listed as Mary A. McAlpine. She raised a grandson named Frank Howard and I would very much like any information on this Frank Howard.
Frank is listed as Abraham heir on April 12, 1871, but no record can be found of him since that time.
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
