I will take what you have posted to them and see what they tell me if that is okay with you. I am not a professional at this and learning how to do all this and keep it organized. While going to school working full time and raising a 2 year old. But I am very interested in doing this for my son and my father in law.

Hi, lots of people have gone to Greeneville and found the answers to their mysteries. I am a professional genealogist and I've sub-contracted with a number of people who had no problem finding exactly what it was I wanted. Greene County is one of the easier places to do research, esp. in Tennessee. A lot has been published and microfilmed. However we resolved the mysteries by conducting research in Greeneville.

The Malones and Morelocks -- and probably every other name in your family -- have been in Greene County intermarrying longer than it has been Greene County. Very familiar Greene County names. There are also websites that these families run -- google. They can save you a lot of time.

It's important to start from where you are and work back. This is not hard to do in TN -- indexes to the TN state vital records collections are on line (Ancestry and also the state site). The censuses are on line. Records distruction is not an excuse for not getting results -- there are all kinds of substitutes.

What's hard is getting organized and learning how to do the work effectively. You can take courses, often free, at the FHCs and libraries, read on line articles and courses (www.genealogy.com/university.html ), join email lists, etc. Sometimes there are helpful people at the local library too. Once you figure out how to get the assistence you need it becomes a lot less daunting.

Best of luck!

Linda In western Pennsylvania at the northern end of the Appalachians, far from Greeneville)
I will try but it is a little hard to do a long time ago there was fire that ruined some records but I will try. Now looking at these names my mother-in-law her borther's name was Rufus Douglas Malone. I know she has McAmis on her side as well but not sure where. That is a name that you wouldn't normally see used unless it was a family name I wouldn't think so.

Hi, glad you are happy but this does need verified. Maybe you can get to the library. I have looked at my database again and see that I did have him there. In 1900 here's William A's family:
McAmis, William, 1871, 29 m 7 years
Sarah wife 1872, 29 m 7 years, 3 children all alive, Oh,
Roy E. So 1895, 5
Beauford N So Jan 1897 3
Viola Dau 1899 1

Notice that the date of the marriage is given (m. 7 years) and we can tell that up to 1900 we got 'all' the kids.
However I see that I believed when entering this that this man's parents were Isaac Rufus McAmis and Rhonda Shanks. Isaac had of course many children, including one named Andrew. His parents were, I believe, John McAmis (1810-1880) and Sarah (Sallie) Hill (1807-1858). John's parents appear to be Thomas (1857-1840) and Jennie Wilson (1779-1884). Thomas is one of the 'three brothers' who settled in TN from Old Bedford Co, VA.

However we need more information to be sure this is correct -- and I still haven't placed that Archibald.

The DNA of these three brothers indicates they descend from the ruling family of the O'Kane, O'Cathain (etc) clan in Ireland. The geneticists in Ireland have been very interested in this family. Earliest 'sighting' in Ireland is a Murtagh McCamnish who got fined for skipping out on jury duty in L'derry about 1821. This particular line is positively traced to south east Tyrone due to a positive DNA match with another family who migrated to Australia.

Linda Merle (also at lmerle@comcast.net)

Hi, that helps a lot! This looks like Ben's SSI:
Ben F. McAmis
37745 Greeneville, Greene, Tennessee,
Born: 15 Dec 1912
Died: 7 Apr 2001

I searched the 1930 census and found:
William A McAmis 58
Tilda McAmis 42 [wife b. 16 years younger]
Bennie McAmis 17 M
Bertha McAmis 15 F
Earl McAmis 13 M
Oda McAmis 9 M
Hughey McAmis 6 M
Ilene McAmis 5 F
Lokell McAmis 2 1/12 [Lochiel] F

Note the wife's age difference. Probably this is a second wife.

Checking 1920:
William A McAmis 48 [b 1872]
Sarah M McAmis 28 [wife 20 years younger]
Isaac B McAmis 23
Izetta McAmis 20
Benjamin F McAmis 6
Bertha M McAmis 4 6/12
William E McAmis 2 1/12

Here we see that Sarah's middle name is probably Matilda and she used Tilda or (as you will see 'Tillie'). We see Zetta was Izetta. It looks like Isaac was a son by the first wife.

I found this marriage in the TN State marriage collection:
Name: William McAmis
Spouse: Tilly Morelock
Marriage Date: 5 Oct 1911 in Greene

A possible first marriage:
Also 1st marriage?
W A McAmis Sarah Blevins 21 Aug 1892

1910 he is a widower
William A McAmis 38
Roy McAmis 16
Buford McAmis 13
Iretie McAmis 11
Andrew McAmis 43 - brother [1867]

There were so many William McAmis' about they often tended to use a middle initial to distinguish themselves. Donno but the brother will be a helpful clue. The kids got 'farmed out' after the first wife died and probably the older ones never returned home, which is why ten years later Roy and Buford aren't in the father's household. They're launched.

William A could be the son of Archie and Melvina (lloyd) McAmis, in the 1880 census:
Archie McAmis 36 [b 1844]
Melvina McAmis 33 [lloyd]
Jane McAmis 14
Julia McAmis 12
Ida McAmis 10
William McAmis 8
Seota McAmis 1M

I have long wondered who Archie's dad is. Anyone know? Hours in the census hasn't helped.

What I would do if I were you is go to the library in Greeneville. They got 'everything' there. When I was doing research on spurs of the Greene Co families who migrated to Chattanooga and the valley north of there, I found the obits very very useful. An index is on line at the Chattanooga library website.

I'd check the obits for the last few generations and double check with the censuses, deaths, births, and marriage records, recalling that obits are often wrong. People are distraught -- and it's not a legal document.

As I mentioned, these folk tend to use nicknames, sometimes ones with no relationship to their legal names. So you have to have a little patience. The obit will give the name the community knew the fella by; the death record may provide his legal names. Anything goes in the censuses.

Andrew seems to have married Florence and moved to Arkansas.

Linda Merle
Hi, I have three Ben's in my database. Dates (birth, death) might help a lot, even an approximate date of birth. Place of burial?

The place in Greene County may not help you. There were (and are) many and the originators arrived there in the late 1700s. They spread out, not just in Greene County, but all over. I've traced a number of lines west into Chattanooga and north of there-- they always go back to Greene County, where they've been dispersing since the 1700s. Greeneville is 'ground zero'.

Also if you have the names of any of his siblings, that'd help me ID him in my database.

I don't have one marrying a Tilda but these folk often used nicknames -- or I might say ....generally used a nickname.

Linda Merle

MCAMIS, Terrence Theo lived in OK, AR, CA

Terrence was my Grandfather. He was born in Peyson, OK and passed away in 1993. His mother was Loraine Hale, and his father separated from the family early on, possibly went by William Theo or Terrence Theo. He had a step father by the name of Harry Painter. He had six sisters, of whom I do not know there whereabouts or status. Iral, Irene, Fran, May, Iris, and one other. Terrence enlisted in the Marine Corps in the late 1930s, and was captured on Wake Island after the Japanese invaded on Dec 8, 1942. He spent 4 years in prison camps, mostly around Shanghai. After the war, he married Norma Bassett in San Francisco in 1949. They had 4 sons, Jay, Fred, Lamont, and Duane. Jay Sr., was my father, and recently passed away.
Leon Clifford McAmis

There is a possibility that Leon Clifford is the half brother of my grandmother. Her father, John Thomas McAmis, was married briefly to Mary Jane Ledbetter in Hardin Co. Il, they had a son, L. Clifford around 1878/9. John Thomas left for CA and later married my ggrandmother. We had heard that there was a half brother, but never knew his name. But yesterday while checking the index of the 1880 Hardin Co Censes, there was Leon age 1, enumerated with Mary McAmis, age 19 who was living with her parents. I only have a little info on JT, but am willing to share. You can contact me at SLiedstran@aol.com.
