Yes - it is same family - I've been to Alvie and seen grave - that's what set me on the Teeswater trail. Lachlan McBain was my ggg grandfather. Tell me - who was the other Mcbain addict - I wonder if he/she is related to me.
regards,
Linda

Dear Jana,

I see you are an associate genealogist for Clan MacBean in Quebec and Ontario. Is there another person that would handle Saskatchewan or could you help me?

I am looking for the marriage of Hattie (Marion McBain) to someone with the sername of CARTER, between 1911 and 1926 in Sask and whether they may have had any children.

Marion married in BC in 1927 to Edward JACKMAN, who is my Great Uncle and listed her name as Marion CARTER, father Hugh CARTER and mother Agnes JOHNSON.

Her death information match the birthdate for Hattie McBain in 1893 and her father Hugh Alexander McBain is buried next to her in Seatac Washington, so I'm fairly confident I have the right people, but the CARTER name is a mystery.

I actually think most of the children of Hugh Alexander McBain and Agnes Johnston must have married in Sask, but I don't see any online resources to check.

Your help would be most appricated.

Many thanks,

Kim Rancans

My McBains were from Lancaster, Glengarry.
I was unable to find the nemes that you mentioned on my "Tree".
My GGG grdpts. were Wm. McBean (1751-1849) and Christina McDonald (1749-1847).
My GG grdpts. were Farquhar McBain (1786-1865) and Jane McBain (cousin) (1789-1868).
My G. grdpts. were Alexander F. McBain (1819-1901) and Sarah Ann(e) Parkhill (about 1833-1922). These are the two that I am having trouble in locating their burial place.
My grandparents were Ricard Bruce (1865-1953) and Catherine Snider(1869-1932).
My parents were Stewart McBain(1899-1959) and Vera Hudson(1909-1990).
I don't know if this will help you. Most likely your McBains and mine were related some way, since they come from the same area in Ontario.
Feel free to contact me if I can help you with any more info. that I may have.

If anyone reading this posting has any info. on Alexander F. and Sarah Ann(e), please contact me.

Pat

Hello Fiona

I have a Georgina McBean in my family tree born in 1861. Her father was William McBean and he lived in Dunachton, Alvie. Georgina lived with her father as shown on the 1871 census. Her mother was Jane Clark from Strone, Kingussie. She was my great, great grandmother and Georgina was her daughter but she wasn't married to William McBean. In 1866 she married Charles Douglas from Perthshire. William McBean married Jessie Comby and he died on 3rd May 1889. Georgina married James McLean in Alvie and died in 1952 at the age of 91. Only found this out yesterday so it was a bit of a shock to find this out as Jane had several children by Charles Douglas. Isabella (Bell) Clark was Jane's sister and she died whilst living as a general servant at William McBean's house. She had gastroenteritis.

I've been pouring over McBain info for the past few days. My husband's great grandmother is Flossie McBain. Her father was James McBain. He was George's son. I don't know if I have all of George's children, but here are the names I have: Sarah, James ("Jim"), Lee, Manerva (Minerva?- no consistant spelling on that one), and Mary. I do have a bit of info on some of the descendants. I've been trying to work backwards lately, though. I just recently discovered Ignatius.

Our line is as follows: Ignatius, George, Jim, Flossie, Elmer, Kim, and Ben (my husband). Jim married Maggie May Ryan (I have their marriage certificate). Flossie married Ernest Lee Hopper, which is the line that I was orginally researching.

Who's your grandfather? Where do you fall into the mix? Looking forward to talking to you soon.

George McBain was a very successful businessman - shipping, oil etc. He arrived in Hong Kong in the 1870s to work for a bank and then founded his own company, based in Shanghai. He had a large family. I am wondering if anyone knows of this person and can provide some details on his origins. He is perhaps my long lost McBain.

Thanks and regards
Fiona MacDonald

I have correspondence in my possession which states that Sarah McBain who married Bill Jewell (and had children Lily and Effie) was a daughter of Duncan and Harriet (Williams) McBain. She also says that she found the graves of Duncan and Harriet in the East Pine River Cemetery near Yuba, which is in Richland County, WI. I noticed that "Carol McBain 2002" is from the Duncan and Harriet McBain line. Some of her messages are listed near yours. I also know of a descendant of Duncan and Harriet here in Wisconsin. She also has messages on this board. She is the one who has "pbxoperator" in her Board name.

I don't know how to identify your personal email as you mentioned I should use. Thanks for your help. I have spent the morning digging and found Jane McBaine age 60 also in Cookstown, Fayette in 1850 where William is with his first wife.

Found William with my Charlotte (McClain) in 1860 census.

Going backwards looking for this family found Jane McVane (clearly a "V" on the census page) in 1840 as HOH. Found a Thomas McBain in Fayette in 1830 (age 50/60). Couldn't find Thomas prior or after 1830.

In 1820 found William McBain in Fayette, age 26/45 and found same in 1810 age 26/45. Don't find him after 1820 or before 1810.

Thanks again!! Made some headway.

Thank you for the info...can you tell me what spellings are shown in the 3 census? I do have access to Ancestry.com and they are notorious for terribly destroying names in their transcription of the census.

Are you related to the McBain line? Do you know what happened to Mr. McBain? After I posted, I did locate "Sharlet McBane" in Illinois in 1880 census with a son Franklin, age 19 and dau Olivia 21.

I'm in Albuquerque so my search of records has to be by internet. Are there some online PA records that you might recommend? I looked at usgenwebpa and familysearch.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Robert,

Yes, I do have alot of McBain's in my family. I am a descandant of my g-g-g-grandfather Gilbert McBain, and his wife Agnes (Nancy) H. Walters McBain. Gilbert, was born
in Scotland in 1792, and I don't have the name of his parents or where he was born, but we figure in the Iverness-shire area of Scotland. He came to this country in about
1820, and married by g-g-g-grandmtoher in 1828 in Columbiana
county, Ohio. He lived and farmed mostly in Fox township,
Carroll county, Ohio. He and his wife raised a family of
11 children in Fox township, they are Elizabeth, Sarah,
Duncan (my g-g-grandfather), Peter, David, James, John,
Hugh (killed in Battle of Vicksburgh during the Civil War),
Gilbert Jr., Catherine and William Calvin. Catherine and
William Calvin died as children in 1855. In 1854 Gilbert
traveled to Wisconsin and purchased with a land patent 450
acress of land in Richland county, Bloom township. He returned to Ohio in Oct. 1854 and died. Duncan, came to
Wisconsin in 1857, James in about 1865, David in about 1860,
and Gilbert Jr with his family in 1874. All these years later, and most of Duncan descandants stayed in WI, as did
James, and Gilbert Jr. There's alot more history, but too
much to go into right here. Gilbert came to this country,
but we don't know how he got here or where he arrived here
in the United States of America. He may have come through
Canada, or been in the War of 1812, or come by boat from
either Scotland, England or Ireland. In doing research
we figure his father may have been William McBean, but
that is not proven. Any information would be helpful

Thank You,

Carol McBain

Hi Robert,

I also have McBains' from ValCartier, Que. My grand-mother Elizabeth McBain Gallagher was born in Val Cartier. I go back four more generations. My gg grandfather appears to have been born in Lower Canada, which could be in the ValCartier area. My gg grandmother was Catherine Kerr born in Scotland. Would very much like to exchange information.

Marian Gallagher

I don't know what access you have to census files or where you live. I did a quick look and there is a possibility that Charlotte was married to William McBain. They would have been married between 1850 and 1860. If this is the correct family he was married before and was a wagonmaker. They lived in Fayette County before they lived in Fayette city. The spellings are different in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census' but that is not uncommon. If you have access to the county records I would start there and look for property taxes and marriage and death records in that county.
Good luck. If you have any other questions, please contact me at my personal e-mail.

Hi - I found the guy (father).

It is indeed Alexander McBain, spouse of Mary Soutter. What I did was discover that on the 1861 census, that particular Alexander McBain was not present - made sense that he'd be away on sea. So, I noticed they had four kids in the family:
your Alexander, a William, a Betsy and a Thomas.

Thomas McBain has proven to be a very unusual name - trust me, I know!

Thomas was also listed as age 4, which means he was born after 1854 when all births became recorded by the government and recorded lots of details.

So I searched and found the birth certificate for Thomas McBain, and there was his father, Alexander McBain, "Seaman". That means your Alexander (married to Phoebe) was Thomas' older brother and that they had a family with 4 kids total atleast:
Alexander, William (oldest), Thomas and Betsy.

Cam McBain
My McBains come from INverness-shire.
The earliest I can trace is to my GGGGG grandpa John McBain, who was a Chelsea Pensioner according to his son's death certificate.
He was posted at Fort George when it had just opened in the 1770s. Not sure if he had any brothers who may have emigrated.
From him came my GGGG grandpa John McBain, born in Croy in 1775. He served with the 78th Foot until 1816. Settles in Aberdeen and married Christian CVampbell. I believe he had a sister Ann who married Caharles CHIVAS in Banchory in 1797 them moved to Aberdeen. he also had a brother William who was reputed to have served in the 75th Foor according to his son's wedding certificate in 1893, and William married a Christina MCCLEOD sometime in the 1820s and loved to Angus.

My GGGG Grandpa Johns descendants in include

Jean (1819), John (1820) , Allan (1822), William (1824) Grace (1826) and Angus (1830).

His eldest son John Married ann CCONON in Aberdeen in 1842, and had two kids (Thomas and Christina) before emigrating to Nova Scotia in 1846 or so. He had four more kids, John Rochatrd (my GGG grandpa), James, William and Alex.

That's the roots of my line!

Any possible connections?

Cam

hello - the Ship Carpenter Alexander Mcbain's death certificate states that he died in Aberdeen, residing at Gallowgate.

Lists him as a ship Carpenter, married to 1) Agnes Munro, (that must be the alternate name for Henrietta) then
(2) Jessie Thomson

He died March 5th, 1890.

Father was James McBain (Ship Carpenter) and Margaret McBain (maiden name Pratt)

Jessie McBain, his second wife, signed the certificate.

He was 61 when he died, so you have a birth in 1829 or so.

Well, this one works still.
As far as that 1887 death of the grocer, the real problem is the age of his son, Alexander, who would have been born in 1862 to be aged 25 at the time of alexander's 1887 death, so that discounts that one. The other one in Huntly is weak.

I think that the ship's carpenter is a possibility, though why he's listed as a seaman (which is a very different thing) I cannot explain.

The two English census piece you have are good possibilities, but I wonder if you should go for the carpenter first?
I found the birth certificate for Catharine Duff McBain and it gives the following info:

Born July 31st, family lived on Prince regent Street on Aberdeen. The father was Alexander McBain, ship carpenter, aged 27 years. he was born in Aberdeen.
There was one son living presently with the family at the time of Catherine's birth - that would be Alexander.
Henrietta was 21 at the time, and she was born in Fraserburgh (a seaport area, which is kind of nice...)

That's it for that!

Sadly, Catharine Duff McBain died in 1856, one year old.

I checked out the Alexander McBain/Jessie Thompson marriage, and here's waht I found:

Alexander is listed as being 52, a Ship Carpenter (journeyman) and living on York Street IN Aberdeen.

Jessie is listed as Jessie Cumming, housekeeper - aged 46. She was widowed, and so signed her married name on the certificate as opposed to Thompson, her maiden name.

Her address is the same as Aklexander's, so they were already co-habitating.

His father is Alexander McBain, Ship Carpenter, and Margaret Pratt.

Her father is James Thomson, General Carter, and mother is Ann Runcie

The key clue are the witnesses:

Robert Thomson is one witness, and John Mitchell is the other. Alex McBain, who was almost 30 at the time, could have signed as a witness, but he did not.
So maybe he was already in London at the time?

Info on Jessie:

JESSIE MITCHELL THOMSON Pedigree
Female

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 29 JUN 1829 Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland

Death:
Burial:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parents:
Father: JAMES THOMSON Family
Mother: ANN RUNCIE

I note the "Mitchell" there, so both the witnesses are from her side, it seems.

well, hope this helps! Let me know what is your next step or if you have any further questions/insights!

Cam
Ok...

First, do you have the image of Catherine Duff McBain's birth registration?
The reason I ask is that it will have a lot of detail becasue that was the first year for mandatory registrations and it may contain better info on those parents.

As far as Phoebe's info goes, where is she from , London? Or was she a transplant from Scotland too? Whatever the case, perhaps you can pinpoint some more likely scenarios for how Alexander and Phoebe even met or where...

Do you have a death certificate for Alexander McBain, the seaman? If you get it it will tell you when he died and his career, and since he died before 1893, you could narrow your search down considerably...

I found the death certificate for the Aberdonian Ship Carpenter Alexander McBain. He died 1890, age 61, and had gotten remarried - Agnes Munro must have died or divorced, and so he remarried a woman named Jessie Thomson. so, his date of death fits and perhaps there was a nasty divorce?? who knows...

Here's another one:
1 1887 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 68 ST NICHOLAS perhaps you should check this one out too??

Here are other Alexander McBains who died between 1875 and 1892:

2 1880 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 43 SELKIRK /SELKIRK
3 1882 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 60 HUNTLY /ABERDEEN
4 1885 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 61 LIFF~ BENVIE AND INVERGOWRIE /ANGUS
5 1886 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 50 INVERNESS /INVERNESS
1890 MCBAIN ALEXANDER M 59 INVERALLAN /MORAY

Perhaps you should check these out? I went on ScotsPeople to find these.

I am also interested in that marriage certificate - do you have an electronic image? That "Alpeda Ernest" section sounds odd, and perhaps I can piece together something from the certificate?

Lastly, I am wondering if your Alexander's father had moved to London too? Have you checked out the census data in England for an Alexander Mcbain for the 1871 and 1881 and 1891 years?

Hope this helps!

Cam

That gives you a great opportunity to narrow the search.

2) It may be that "seaman" was the short term used for a ship's carpenter, boat builder?

3) Maybe a family split??
Hi Cam

Yes, I too found this Alexander McBain spouse of Mary Soutter. I have traced them through all the census up to the 1901 census when Alexander (father) was 77 and his wife Mary Soutter was 69. The only problem with this is that on the marriage certificate of my Alexander McBain to Phoebe De Sola on 03/04/1893 it states that father Alexander McBain deceased! So I am not sure now that this is the correct family.

What do you think?

Carole

Hi

1) On the marriage certificate it only stated his father's name. (It looks like "Alpeda Ernest! Alexander McBain"(deceased)). His profession was a Seaman. Alexander who married lived in Mile End.
2) Yes, I agree, it could be ship carpenter etc.. I have found another family of Mcbain's whose Alexander was a ship's carpenter.
3) I thought the same, but I would not have thought so, but you never know.

Alexander was 40 years old (Bachelor) when he married Phoebe on 3rd April 1893 so his birth year is c1853.

Carole

Hi Cam

No I don't have the image of Catherine Duff McBain. I went onto Scotlandspeople and could not find anything on her. I did have the image of Alexander McBain (son of Alexander and Henrietta) as follows:

Born 12/09/1853 Alexander born son of Alexander Ships Carpenter and Henrietta Munro. Alexander was baptised on 02/10/1953. The clergyman was Revd Alex Spence and the witnesses were Congregation.

With regard to Phoebe - she was born in East London, England and remained there. Her parents were born in Amsterdam and came over to England before Phoebe was born.
Her maiden name was De Sola. I can only assume that they met in London.

You said that you found the death certificate for Alexander McBain the ship carpenter. Did it tell you who was at his death and the names of both his wifes?

I have looked into a couple of the names that you gave me i.e.

1882 Alexander McBain M 60 Huntly/Aberdeen info as follows:
Aged 36 (died 13/11/1882)was a Millwright by profession. Married to Jane Issac. Father was Donald McBain a Road Contractor. Mother was Margaret McBain (nee McKenzie). Witness of death was John Issac brother in law.

1887 Alexander McBain M 68 St Nicholas info as follows:
Aged 68 (died 12/01/1887) was a Grocer (Master. Married to 1st Rachel Henry 2nd Barbara Simpson. Father was Donald McBain a farmer (Deceased). Mother Elizabeth McBain (nee Forbes) (Deceased). died of bronchitis. Signature of witness was Alexander McBain, son, 25 Brunswick Buildings, Goulston Street, LONDON who was present at death.

The last one sounds good apart from his occupation!

I have not checked the others out yet as I believe them to be from Aberdeen and these were the only 2 apart from the one you found.

Yes I do have an electronic copy of the marriage certificate, could not attach it as it is a pdf. If you let me have your e mail address I e mail it to you. I have also got Alexander Junior's death certificate in 1908.

My Alexander's father could have moved to London.

I have checked the 1871 England census and have found Alexander Bain 44 (1827) Ship Master born in Scotland living in Mile End (East London). Living with Ann Bain 38 (1823) sister in law.

Found in the 1891 England census Alexander McBain 62 (1829) born in Scotland, lived in Eastbourne.

What do you think

Carole

Hi

Yes I have found this Alexander with parents Alexander and Mary Soutter, just not sure it is the correct one. What is the LDS website? I have found a couple more that were born in the same year/year before but can't seem to be certain. I was hoping that someone would know my Alexander who married Phoebe and knew his father.

McBain Family

II am writing about William McBain, and wondering if he's
related to Gilbert McBain, who was born in Scotland in approx. 1792. He also came the U.S., settled in Ohio, and
he and his wife Nancy (Agnes) raised a family of 11 children.
We figured he came through Canada, one of his children were
named William Calvin, and the others were Elizabeth, Sarah,
Duncan, John, Peter, James, David, Hugh, Gilbert Jr., and
Cathrine. Any help would be appreciated.

It is not Inf but Ins, it usually means the dates are in the same month, so Born 12 ins baptised 18 June 1745 would mean they were born 12 Jun 1745. It was a shorthand used in church records at that time
