Is anyone still searching for info? Francis P McBarron lived with my great-great grandparents in 1910, George and Sarah Murphy, as noted on the census. I am at a roadblock trying to find out who his wife was and who was the mother to his sone Alden McBarron. I would really appreciate any info at all. The only info we have is that Catherine Murphy McBarron came to the U.S. to live with her son Francis in Oregon, where they both died in 1927.

Yes, still on the trail of the McBarons. I have to spell it so as most of the children of Hugh & Elizabeth Hurst here in Australia spelt it with one "r". After receiving no response from original messages, I gave away looking on the noticeboards but will endeavour to keep looking in case you reply.

(1) Hugh McBarron (Snr.)

born?
died 1847
married Elizabeth Hurst

Born at Irvinestown, County Fermanagh (editor’s note Irvinestown is actually in County Fermanagh, not County Tyrone as recorded), Northern Ireland of Roman Catholic parentage. He followed pastoral pursuits but was ruined financially by acting as a guarantor for a neighbourly debt. He married Elizabeth Hurst (2) of Protestant denomination and from a family with strong Orangemen tendencies. Hugh McBarron Snr. (1) died in 1847 and was buried in Ireland the same year in which his youngest child, Hugh McBarron Jnr (3) was born. Elizabeth McBarron (born Elizabeth Hurst (2)) and Hugh McBarron Jnr (3), emigrated to Australia in 1863 – the other members of the family having emigrated there in 1858 or thereabouts. The widow (2) operated a boarding home in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, but shortly afterwards settled at Burrawong, near Robertson, about 1868 with her son Hugh Jnr (3). Other members of her family, John, James, Jane, Mary and Elizabeth had previously moved to the Robertson disctrict. She was buried in the Roman Catholic section of Burrawong Cemetery, reputedly through the influence of her son-in-law James Bell (5) and nephew Martin.
I am thinking that they are part of the same family, given they were from the same part of Ireland. There is a Hugh McBarron listed as being born in Australia at Robertson, I am hoping I can link up with someone and find out about connections - my great grandmother also lived in Robertson, NSW Australia. I am trying to find out what I can from elderly aunts and uncles - if I find more, I will let you know.

Dear Maxene, It sure sounds like we are. My McBarrons lived in Floyd County, Indiana after coming from Ireland. How about yours? There was a Hugh in this group, but according to some baptismal records I have a list of, his wife's name was Margaret McCanon or McKenney. However there could be more than one Hugh in the family. What do you think?

Barron had the Mc put on it when Patrick moved to Scotland. My mother has more info but I believe the monument is in the town of Bathe (Northern Ireland) or close to this town.

Mc Barron name origin

Mc Barron/ Mac an Bhairun (Son of the Baron)
comes from a branch of the O'Neills of Ulster Ireland. The Mc Barrons are descendants of the Baron of Dungannon (one of the titles held by the O'Neills)
Inextricably linked with the O'Neills they were marginalise after the latter were defaeted by Queen Elizabeth in her conquest of Ulster. The key engagement of this war was in Kinsale in Co. Cork on the south coast of ireland in 1601 They lost their land and titles.

In the 1840s many people of the McBarron name(and various distortions of it) are recorded in the ships logs of the "coffin ships" fleeing the famine in Ireland. Today you will find McBarrons prominent in Donegal and Fermanagh neighbouring counties in Ulster. There are far more in America however.

Hi Chris,
The information that I posted are relatives of mine that lived in Middleboro,Massachusetts,USA. The McBarrons came from Ireland and moved here. I am having trouble tracing their whereabouts thereafter. Still your relatives could have a connection, I just don't have enough information on all the McBarrons at this time. Keep in touch and I will do the same, good luck.........Jim
