Hi there,

I would love to hear from anyone who is researching McCaig families from Wigtownshire, Scotland (Mochrum in particular, but am interested in Wigtownshire in general). It would be good to compare notes with anyone with common ancestors!

As I actually live in Scotland, I'm in a good position to carry out research in person and visit places of interest. I have already been to Mochrum several times, spoken to locals and seen some of the records held in the church. If anyone would like any of this info please let me know.

Here is a quick overview:
=========================

- I have traced my own branch of the McCaig family back to co Down in Ireland (Robert McCaig b. 1826 and Jane Brown b. 1816). I would desperately like to know more about the family in Ireland! Their movements, where exactly they were, why and when they went to Ireland, etc.

- Robert and Jane then moved to Glasserton in Wigtownshire towards the end of the Irish potato famine in the late 1840's (perhaps coincidence, but I suspect not) where they worked as agricultural labourers.

- By 1861 Robert and Jane had moved to Mochrum (Barrachan Village, to be exact) and had 8 children.

- His son Samuel b. 1859 and Samuel's wife Margaret Milligan Coid b. 1860 lived nearby also working in farming, eventually moving to the Philgowan farmhouse itself.

- Most of the family (headed by Samuel, my great great grandfather) emigrated to Canada in 1911. One member was left behind.

- Eventually it came full circle. My great grandfather and grandfather were both born in Canada, they then moved and my father was born in California. Finally, my father returned to Scotland, and I was born and brought up in Scotland myself. It is my father's dream to be buried in Mochrum with his ancestors.

Again, please get in touch if your family is in any way connected with mine and we can compare notes. I look forward to hearing from you :)
