James McCaleb son of William McKillop b 1715 Scotland

I'm looking for information on James McCaleb b. 1744 , son of William McKillop of Scotland, born 1715 and was married to Sarah McAlpin b. 1715.

I'm finding information that just doesn't seem reasonable, namely that James McCaleb b 1744 married Sarah Knox in 1762 and had (at least) the following children:
Ann b 1781 who married a Jamison
John Stuart b 1784
Mary b 1786 who married a Wiley
Hugh Stuart b. 1789
James Knox b 1801-1807
William Neil b 1810

I think I am missing a generation. It doesn't make sense that James McCaleb b. 1744 would marry in 1762 and not have children until 1781; he would have been 37 and then continued to have children until 1810 when he would have been 66. Why is there an over 10 year gap between the children of Hugh (1789) and James Knox (1801-ish). It just doesn't seem reasonable.

Perhaps Sarah Knox is not the first wife?
Any information out there?

William D. McCaleb

My 3rd great grandfather, Samuel McCaleb, had a son William Briggs McCaleb born 1818 Feliciana Parish, LA who was the uncle of Catherine Elizabeth McCaleb Pierce. Her father, Thaddeus Constantine McCaleb, died of yellow fever in Bayou Sara, LA in 1853. Samuel was the only "McCaleb" listed on the 1820 census of Feliciana Parish, LA, which divided into East & West Feliciana Parish in 1824.

Dorinda Ewing Mcaleb, widow of Thaddeus, with her two surviving children, Catherine Elizabeth who married John Pierce, and William Alfred McCaleb, my great grandfather moved to Old Tarrant near Sulphur Springs, TX to be near her parents, Wilson Edley & Hannah DeSpain Ewing.

Lori Wooten, g-lwooten@windstream.net

Parts of your information are familiar. My great grandfather, William Alfred McCaleb, was a brother to Catherine Elizabeth McCaleb who married John A. Pierce near Sulphur Springs, TX. Their parents were Thaddeus Constantine McCaleb (died in 1853 in Bayou Sara,W. Feliciana Parish, LA) and Dorinda C. Ewing McCaleb who married Isham Enlow McIntire in TX in 1855. Thaddeus C. McCaleb's father was Samuel McCaleb born 1812 in Feliciana Parish, LA. I do not know who the William D. McCaleb is.

Hello-
I got most of the information from Ancestry.com.
I also traveled to Port Gibson, MS, in May 2008 to visit the McCaleb family grave [Claiborne County]. There are a few family (distant?) members living outside Port Gibson but, unfortunately, I did not get an opportunity to speak with them.
I have not been active with research for several months so have nothing for 'source documentation'. sorry

Susan Ferry
I have an ancestor, Daniel McCalip (McCaleb) that settled in MS about 1803 in close proximity to William McCaleb and his family. I have been trying to establish if there was a relationship between Daniel and William, brother, nephew. There seem to be too many similarities for there not to be a connection. It is impossible to tell from early Census, so I am trying to find other information that might make the tie. Do you have source documents to prove the information in your post that might help?

Thanks for any information you can share!

I forgot to add more information. I saw the thread about Durango Colorado. Emma, my husbands grandmother said her grandfather owned 100,000 acres near there and sold beef to the army during the war. She said most of the land was still in her family's name. She said there were 5 children in Durango but she didn't know any more information than that.

Is this the same Ellen Burns that was born in Southern Ireland and married Joseph Emery McCaleb. He went by Robert Emery McCaleb and he had a brother that was a jr. If so my husband's grandmother's dad was the second son. I am trying to get the family history together because we are planning a trip to Ireland and I wanted to get as much family background as possible. If this sounds right to you, could you please send me as much info as possible. It would be greatly appreciated.

Re: McClaeb Researchers Reply Please!

I am researching the McClaeb line from Cass Co. My mother is the daughter of Sylvia Tilley, dau. of Charles Tilley & Lillian McClaeb. Lillian's parents were William Frank McClaeb and Mattie Shoemaker, but I am trying to work on his parents, Hiram McClaeb & Lucinda Jackson. I have found them on the 1850 census of Wabash Co., IN however McClaeb is spelled McCaleb on the original document. Now I know that is not the way we have always spelled it, but I have never seen this census before and it is the earliest one with them on it I have seen. SO, did the census taker mess it up or was McCaleb correct and it turned into McClaeb along the way. It only matters for research sake as all of us that are McClaebs are going to stay that way...there is to many of us now, but I bet we are all related...LOL! So if any one has any info on this mystery please let us know!
Also I have pictures of the Bakery in Ohio, which my mother used to visit with her family; if any of Harry's descendants are out there I would be glad to share.
Did you get your McCalebs sorted and find what you need. I have a Zill MCCaleb and wife Mary Martin, he was the son of James McCaleb born 1770 who died in 1828 and Mary born 1770 who died in 1848. Both buried at the Old Peach Orchard cem that as part of James McCaleb's property. Zill is named in his fathers will. Zill sold what he was to inherit from his mother in 1836 and moved to Texas. Zill had a great newphew James Philamon McCaleb born 1847 that moved to Wilbarger Co., Tx after Civial War. Have more info if you need

I have begun researching the Mustons/Hiltons because my maternal granmother was Lula Muston Hilton. Her father was William Alexander Muston and her mother's maiden name was Olive. Lula's brothers were Charles "Charley Grover Muston, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Muston and Marion Franklin "Frank" Muston. My mom spent alot of time at Frank & Rosa's house and Jack & Fanny's house growing up.My mom is Sandi but the family called her Odell; she is the yougest of 10 kids. I was just over at the Bronte Cemetery last Sunday and had some of the old-timers help me find W.A Muston's grave. I can not find out who his father or mother were yet and I need help with his wife ? Olive and her family. Amy in Tx

I am looking for anyone who is researching this line trying to determine what happened to their daughter Myrtle. I am working on Wichita Co. TX newspapers and I found the following. I would like to know if this might be the same Myrtle. Julie

Wichita Daily Times (Wichita Falls, Texas) > 1911 > August > 24

MRS. P.A. BAILEY SWALLOWS POISON

Mrs. P.A. Bailey Swallowed a dose of carbolic acid this afternoon shortly after 3 o’clock at the Modern Rooming House and as the Times goes to press is in a dying condition and cannot possibly recover, according to a statement made by Dr. Mike Walker who was called.
Mrs. Bailey was until Saturday night, Miss Myrtle McCaleb, her marriage to Bailey having occurred on that date. Near the body of the unfortunate woman was found a note of which the following is a copy.
“Please do not change any of my clothes. Phone everywhere for P.A. Bailey and give this message to every paper in the Union that he may get the news that his wife is dead of a broken heart.”
Mrs. P.A. Bailey

Wichita Daily Times (Wichita Falls, Texas) > 1911 > August > 25

Body of Mrs. Bailey Remains Unclaimed

Another note found pinned inside her waist may throw further light on the suicide of Mrs. P.A. Bailey, the bride of five days who ended her life at the Modern Rooming House yesterday by swallowing carbolic acid.
The note called upon God to witness that she had always been true to Bailey. This and the other note found in the room with her body requesting that the news be relayed to Bailey that she died of a broken heart, indicates a misunderstanding between Bailey and his bride which may account for his disappearance.
Nothing can be learned concerning Bailey or his present whereabouts. He had been in town only a few days before he married the girl who was a waitress at the Union Station lunch room.
It is said that he came here from Bowie, but a message to that place has failed to locate him.
The woman’s body has been removed to E.S. Hill’s undertaking establishment where it will be held several days in the hope that word can be had from her relatives or friends.
It is said that before coming to Wichita Falls she had been employed at the Richelieu Hotel in Fort Worth.
A short time before she took the acid it is said that she attempted to reach someone living on Galveston avenue in Fort Worth by long distance.
