Re: Information on my grandfather Hugh McCallum

Hi Robert,

Many thanks for the speedy and detailed reply.

I have a Dougald McCallum who married Mary McKechnie at Soroba, Oban in 1856. He was thereafter only ever know as John, he was a tailor and according to his marriage and death certificate his father was Dougald a shoemaker (on birth cert) and Mariner on death certificate. Nothing else is know of his father, he is not to be found on any census from 1841 upwards. John was, according to 1861, 71, 81 and 91 census, born in Oban.
His mother, Ann Livingston, was born in Kilbride, of Lismore parents, she died in Oban in 1866, no mention of a husband!

John's wife, Mary McKechnie, was born at Assapol - Ardtun area and after reading the excellent "Tea With Chrissie" by Rosalind Jones, about the McGillivray family from Burg on the island of Mull, (couldn't put it down) where I read about Chrissie's McCallum ancestors from the Ross of Mull, I've kind of had it in my head that my McCallums may have originated there too.
Perhaps Mary McKechnie knew this branch of the Ardtun McCallums when she came to the mainland.

As for the name Hugh! John and Mary had 4 sons, none of them were Hugh. In my great-grandmother's birthday book (a daughter of John and Mary)she has the name "Hugh McCallum" beside the date July 12th, but she didn't put the year.

On the 1871 census for John and Mary's household there is a "Betsy McCallum aged 21" who is a visitor. She has with her, her illegitimate son Duncan aged 2 months. She later marries the child's father and on her marriage certificate her parents are Hugh McCallum, tailor and Mary McGregor. The old parish records has a marriage for these two in Kilmore and Kilbride 1830.

I think John and Hugh could have been brothers but Hugh and Catherine are not to be found after 1851, nor any of their children apart from Betsy (Elizabeth). My theory is that the whole family went to Australia or America but Betsy, the eldest, stayed behind.
When John McCallum died in 1898 his obituary in the Oban Times said "American and Australian papers please copy".

So that's as far as I can go with my McCallums,
Thanks again for the super reply and if you get a chance, read "Tea with Chrissie", the author says that Chrissie's great-grandmother (I think) wrote the tune that we know as "Morning Has Broken", the air is called "Bunessan". This lady was a McCallum from Ardtun.

Jim Leonard.

McCallums - Get your DNA tested!!!

Have you been at a brick wall with your genealogy?

GET YOUR DNA TESTED!

For those who don't know, there is already a MacCallum/Malcolm Surname DNA project (which inludes ALL spelling variations, yes, yours too).

Here is the direct website to the project, itself:
http://www.ourfamilyorigins.com/maccallum/dna.htm

By doing a simple Internet search you can find many different companies which will do DNA testing for you. Do some research and decide which is best for you. I used www.familytreedna.com. Many study projects allow you to contribute your test results to a study regardless of what company you choose.

The more McCollums that get tested, the better. The more peole are tested the more groups and relations we begin to see taking shape within the MacCallum/Malcolm branch of the global family tree.

Instead of asking the same tired questions on the message boards or reading through the tangled mass of unverified "facts" confusing everyone on the typical genealogy sites, GET YOUR DNA TESTED. It's more worthwhile and will help everyone else at the same time.

Mike

James, John L., Neill, Neill A., Wm. B., Alexr. & Barnabas

B. is listed in district 9.

Most of these men are back in the Giles County census for 1840 but none but Barnabas McCollum can be found on the 1850 census.

Here are some sources relating to Neil and Alexander that a fellow McCollum researcher (John Green) shared with me:

1. "Early TN Marriages, Vol. I, Grooms" shows that Neil McCollum married Eliza Neil of Lincoln County 9/14/1847.
2. Neil McCollum was executor of the will of W. B. D. Shelton 8/15/1849.
3. "Early Court Records of Lincoln County TN" show A. J. McCollum and his wife Mary Ann received their share of the estate of Joshua Gibson on 11/27/1853.
4. Lincoln County Cemetery records showed Alexander J., wife Mary Ann, son William and daughter Annie were buried in the Buchanan - McCollum Cemetery.

I would love to hear from anyone who has information on any of the individuals mentioned above, especially Neill, Neill A. and Alexander McCollum/McCallum/McCollom/McCullum.

Mike

McCollum - Richardson DNA connection

Hello fellow McCallum (all variants) descendents:

I have recently tested my DNA and found an identical match with a Richarson. I am looking for any possible connections between both McCollum (again, spelling does not matter) and Richardson men and women. My McCollum line came from NC to Giles/Lincoln/Marshall Co., TN to Delta Co., TX. The most likely place for a non-paternal event (NPE) to have taken place as far as we can tell is Delta County, TX. Would appreciate any tips or leads you might be able to share.

Mike

McCallum, son of Duncan McCallum and Catherine Bellin, born in McNab Twp, who married Margaret Wallace. A John McCallum, born 1774 Perth, Scotland who married Janet Fisher and the list goes on and on. There were also some McCallums living around Perth, Lanark, Ontario.

Hello,
Pardon the late reply but I am wondering if anyone on this thread is still researching Edward McCallum. If so I would like to hear if you have any new info beyond that listed here. I believe that Edward is my 5th grandfather. My info has him born abt 1756 in Argyllshire,Scotland and died abt 1804 in NC, possible Robeson Co. I don't know when he came to America. Edward was the father of Hugh McCallum (my 4th gfather), b. abt 1775, Robeson Co, NC d. after 1860 in Georgia, possible Butts Co. I am trying to confirm if Edward is indeed the father of Hugh and any other useful info as well. Thanks, Jerry stewartjk@juno.com

Duncan McCallum married Chistina McDonald (b. 1815 or so) in Scotland.
They came to Canada in about 1840 (to Ontario I am thinking).
Their son Murdock McCallum (b. Nov. 23, 1851 in King Township York Ontario) married Margaret Matheson (b. 1857 in Ontario) in 1888 in Wellington Co. Ontaro). Murdock and Margaret had 4 children: Janet (1889), Christina (1892),
Margaret (1893) and Duncan (1895).
Christina married James Harry Rylance in 1922 and Duncan married Isobel Forbes Manson in Wentworth Ont.
I am looking for descendants of Thomas McCallum and Margaret Stewart married in Glasgow in 1911. Both were born around 1886. Thomas was the son of Andrew McCallum and Mary McQueen. Margaret Stewart was my grandfather's sister. I believe Thomas and Margaret had a son Thomas and a daughter Margaret as well. I think the son Thomas may have died in Preswick, South Ayrshire in the year 2000
I see it is some years since you posted this message so you may already have this information.
My query with Alexander is the name of his wife who appears to be Christina Heintz however he speaks of her as "Grace" in old letters our family still have.
I have just found this message. My great great grandfather was Newton Treen Hicks McAllum born in India in 1844. In the 1861 Scotland census he was at school in Edinburgh.
In 1864 he married Ellen Annie Tait (d 1880); they had 2 children Leonora (dob unknown) and Newton Treen Goldsmith McAllum born Feb 1872. Newton snr married an Amelia Elizabeth Hall in 1872, She died in 1878 and he died in 1881 in the Lambeth Infirmary. He was a Lieutenant in the Madras army.

Is any of this familiar? I am clutching at straws with the surname I know!

Thanks.

NEWTON MCALLUM

Newton McAllum was the name my grandmother used as her father on her marriage certificate in 1916, although that was untrue; I believe he was her grandfather. I have found a Newton McAllum born 'East Indies' in the 1861 Scotland Census. I have a death certificate for him dated 1881; he died in the Lambeth Infirmary. Also 2 marriage certificates, one dated 14 Dec 1864 tO Ellen Ann Tait (d 1880) and the other dated 13 Aug 1872 to Amelia Elizabeth Hall. They both have his father as Donald McAllum, Surgeon. Newton's full name was Newton Treen Hicks McAllum. He had a son by his first wife, Newton Treen Goldsmith McAllum born 14 Feb 1872.

Ellen Ann Tait had 2 sisters who appeared in 1891 and 1901 censuses with my grandmother and her sister and brother. I believe my great grandmother was called Leonora McAllum,(I found her on 1881 census at school in Margate, she was born in India) although on all the birth certificates of her children she calls herself Nelly Frances Strange McAllum.

I would appreciate any information on this Newton McAllum.

Thank you.

Born about 1856 in Butts county,Ga. and moved at some time (when?) to Union parish, La. I believe to the Shiloh community. He was married to Malinda Porter. His parents were Ignatious F. & Mary Benson. I have him on the 1900 & 1910 census in Union ph. but cannot find when he died and where Wyatt L. & Malinda are buried. Also would like to learn about children, besides my great grandfather James Lewis McCallum (1879-1911, buried Mt.Patrick cem).

They had two kids George McCallum Born 1864 in Balfron Stirlingshire and Annie born in 1868 also in Balfron.

I beleive that Willimas dad lived in Kilchoman in Argyleshire around the year 1851.

Any leads would be greatfully accepted.

Thanks
Garry McCallum
garry.mccallum@btinternet.com

Re: Mabel E. McCallum b. 1904 Vancouver, BC? ... looking for her family

Happy to say I found her parents and siblings in a 1901 Census record for Vancouver. Neil McCallum born in October 1870, Margaret McCallum born in 1869, both in Ontario annd they had three daughters, Maud, Bessie and Mabel. This has helped flesh things out somewhat but am now looking for some birth or marriage records for Margaret and Neil so that I can carry on. Thanks in advance to anyone that replies.

Hi Christine,

I'm curious to know if the son to Mary Patterson McCallum and Neil McCallum also named Neil was born in October of 1870.

My great-grandfather was Neil McCallum born in Ontario in October 1870 and married a Margaret (have no idea what her maiden name was). They appear in the 1901 Census in Vancouver, BC and had three daughters Maud, Bessie and Mabel.

My father's mother was Mabel E. McCallum and she died when he was quite young and he has very little information about her family. She died in Vancouver January 3, 1941 (tho my father recalls it was 1940) She had married William Ewart Shippobotham February 1931 and had two children: John Peter and Margaret Patricia. I would be interested in anyone who has run across her family. Thanks.

Thanks Christine, I guess I can eliminate that particular Neil from my branch... and yes, there do seem to be quite a few Neils. All part of the fun I guess.

I appreciate your prompt reply.

Cheers!
