Ken, great to "meet" you!

I'm the great-grandson William Henry McCamish who was a son of Frederick who is buried somewhere in the cemetery on that property near Custer. William Henry (generally called just Henry) moved to Anderson or Woodford Co. sometime before 1890 and married a Willis. Before he died, he went back to Breckenridge and is buried up there also, I suspect. We toured the cemetery and took photos a couple of years ago.

Maybe you know Dan McCamish of E-Town. He and I have corresponded for years and talked on the phone a couple of times.

Doug

Hey there. Yes, we were clan Gunn in Scotland but I also have heard about the Northern Ireland DNA results so . . .we have some work cut out for us, eh?

Anyway, my dad was the last McCamish born on the family farm in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. I'd love to exchange info with you!

-Ken McCamish
kenetha65 at yahoo.com

Found this in the Endangered Graveyard article:
McCAMISH
We suspect that there may be persons named PLEW buried here as well, as Zilpha McCamish, possibly the first burial here, is thought to have been a Plew before her marriage to John McCamish and members of the Plew family lived next door to the McCamishes in the early 1800s.

Re: McCamish Family Crest

Hi Doug, armory (family crests, etc), arose in medieval times. The way things worked is the king granted land to knights in return for the knight providing so many men at arms, horses, etc, in times of war. There was no standing army. These men were called 'knights'!! These men ruled manors on which serfs lived, farming the land. (I'm being very general here).

Over time the king came to be king of more than the local valley. Higher levels of gentry were created -- dukes, etc. These landed families received coats of arms from the king. There were organizations or offices in England, Ireland, and Scotland who had the authority to grant these. Rules evolved limiting the right to acquire these -- heraldry arose. The crest is part of the coat of arms. If you google for heraldry you'll find a lot of info. The idea here is that the gentry and the king had coats of arms...the serfs and freemen did not. If they assumed them, they were being 'uppity' and they were severely dealt with by the law. Visitations were held whereby the local gentry were inspected to ensure no one was assuming the state of gentry illegally.

The point being only the upper classes had coats of arms, of which the crest was a part.

Also the coat of arms was not granted to a family but to an individual, usually the eldest male. There were rules about how the next individual's coat of arms was determined (combining the parents')...so using heraldry one can trace the family history sometimes. The second sons, etc, could not bear the father's coat of arms though I think you could quarter them, etc (complicated rules arose over time....I'm no expert!). There were various ways to acquire a title and coat of arms including purchase -- a big source of revenue for English monarchs.

However most individuals never had a coat of arms as they were commoners. There are laws still in Scotland allowing the government to prosecute those illegally assuming a coat of arms. It was never practiced in America because it is founded on the idea that all men are equal. So Americans also don't inherit titles like Duke or bear ones like "Sir". We're revolutionaries and such is against our national creed and our forefathers forbade the practice.

That said, there is no evidence that any McCamish ever had a coat of arms per say back in the old countries or were ever in a position to attempt to acquire them. That's why they came to America and Australia.

However these are fun to create and invent -- or let somoene sell you a bogus one on the Internet! Lots of that happening. But if you create a family crest for yourself, perhaps it should be based on the O'Cathain coat of arms since the McCamish DNA is O'Cathain. It would appear from the DNA that at one point a man whose decendents would take this surname did rule the O'Cathain clan, but this was before the advent of either London or Dublin rule in Ulster. I don't know how the O'Cathains practiced heraldry but you can probably find someone to tell you if you google for heraldry O'Cahan.

Irish pedigrees By John O'Hart is on line at books google. p. 170 discusses the O'Cahan coat of arms.

The Irish gov has ceased to grant arms recognizing that it conflicts with its revolutionary spirit as well so there's no way now for pretenders of old Irish families to legally assume a title or arms.

Best of luck,

Linda Merle
Wonderful to hear from the California group and great to know that you have a reunion. There have been a couple of reunions in Tennessee and Kentucky in the long ago past, but it's a struggle with us spread apart so much.

I assume the folks in Arkansas got there from Tennessee. I could probably look up Dallis and find out what branch that is. Do you know if any of the group out there has had their DNA tested. (Not that it would be any different than the few here.) I see a Dr. Mark McCamish in the news now and then. Is he part of the California group?

As you may know, my little family group is a splinter off of old William (Greene Co., TN) that went northwest to Kentucky. Most of this splinter is around Louisville, generally, but my family is mostly near Lexington, KY. My grandfather was convinced to change the name in the 1920 timeframe to "McCammish" for unknown reasons.

Thanks for posting.
Doug McCammish

Junie Clara McCamish is an aunt of mine, known as "Aunt Clara". We have a large amount of McCamishes in Southern California.

My great grandfather is Marion Dallas McCamish. We have a family reunion each year (in late September) for all the descendants of Marion and Mary McCamish, and usually have about 100+ people attend. If you are interested in attending, please let me know and I will send you an invitation and newsletter.

By the way, Marion and Mary came from Arkansas but settled in the 20's in Southern California (La Habra)

If you are doing ancestry work, my cousin, Eulimma Harvey, can give you a lot of background on the clan, as she is very involved in research, too.

If I can be of more help, feel free to email me at: drchrishamilton@aol.com.

If you would like to contact Eulimma, email her at:
elharvey@earthlink.net

Good luck in yor search.

Chris Hamilton

The info you game me Doug left me to believe that I'm either from William or Thomas. The info I got from Ancestry.com has some dates and some other stuff different from what you found for me. It actually has Jane McCamish b.1814 as James' sister. Wierd!

so if I'm correct,(which I might not be but anyway)my line is (starting from me and working back)..me(Stacy)to Ronald 1938 to Dudley 1908 to William F. 1862 to Reese 1832 to James 1782 to Thomas 1757.

Hopefully I'm correct.

Stacy

not sure why I didn't see the reply from Doug here and just on the Mccamish mailing list. So I will respond here in hopes that it gets there..

Doug,

Thank you for the info. It really helped!! My Uncle and I have been trying to figure out what happened to Reese and now we know! I'm still trying to research all of my McCamish side. I have a lot of info on Nancy Elliott which her family dates back to Scotland in the 1200's.

I do have a copy of my ggrandfather (William F.) and it does show Nancy and Reese as his parents. Wierd that I can't find any more info on him though.

I was wondering where can I find that book that you all talk about. The one from E.C McAmis. Sounds like there is a bunch of information in it. If you know where I can get it, I'd be greatful.

Thanks again for your help.

Stacy

I have been trying to find information on my great grandfather and his father. My great grandfather's name was William Fergamorz McCamish. Not positive that the middle name spelling is correct or not, also not sure if that was even his middle name. He was born in Utah in 1862. His fathers name was Reese McCamish and his mothers name was Nancy E. Elliott.

If anyone has any info on William F. or Reese please let me know.
Thanks, Stacy

Hello, McCamishes:
I am Patty McCamish Donohoe. Samuel was my great great grandfather. I've been researching him for a number of years. I have his muster records as well as his son, James'(by Nancy Stuart.)Sam was captured and paroled at Vickburg. The final entry in his record says that he was wounded and sent to Mobile, AL. He was most likely sent down the Miss.River to the hospital at Point Clear. At least 300 CSA soldiers were discovered on the grounds (referred to as "Confederate Rest,") buried shoulder to shoulder, hip to hip via laser technology! I am trying to prove Samuel is among the dead. Capt. Andrew J Cawood from his regiment (The TN 43rd)has been identified. I sure could use some help getting more proof. Bradley Co. Library archives have very little on him. I appreciate the NPaper art. It's a clue. By the way, I am descended from Wilson, Samuel's son by his second wife, Mary Ann Hyden. Her mother was full-blooded Cherokee(Caldonia.)I was hoping to see a record of some kind: list of casualties from Vicksburg, a local obit. Someone needs to go to Cleveland for hands-on research. Are any of you nearby? The records at Point Clear were destroyed by fire in 1969.

I'm pasting my email into the thread to preserve it.

From E.C. McAmis' book "Marriage Records"

Elliott, Nancy Elizabeth b 9/6/1837 Kirtland, Ohio. Daughter of David Elliott & Mary Cahoon, the third of six wives (said to be a Mormon with six wives?). Nancy Married Reese Cameron McCamish b. 1832 TN. About 1852 Henry Co. Iowa & went west to Salt Lake City, Utah, Nancy & Reese divorced in California. Nancy Elizabeth Elliott McCamish remarried to Ewin Gardner @ San Rafael, CA, in 1871. Reese & his niece Nancy Ann Loy born circa 1835 Indiana (daughter of John Loy & Jane McCamish b 1814 Greene Co., TN) show
living with Alex. & Lucinda Foust both b. 1908 TN. Greene Co.?
After the divorce, Reese was killed in a logging accident @ Eureka, CA. Cutting the giant redwood trees). On the 1850 census of Henry Co., Iowa, the Jane McCamish b. 1814 shown above was the sister to this Reese & were the issue of James McCamish b. 1782 Bedford Co., VA. & Nancy Brown b. 1785 Greene Co., TN. Nancy Brown was the daughter of Thomas Brown b. circa 1750 who lived on Lick Creek in Greene Co., TN, very early. James McCamish b. 1782 Greene Co., TN was a Presbyterian & farmer who migrated to Greene
Township, Randolph Co., Indiana about 1835, son of the brother Thomas McCamish b. 1757 & his first wife (unknown). Another line of the family from the brother William McCamish b. 1750 migrated into Jackson Township,
Sullivan Co., Indiana in 1834 from Kentucky who was Adam McCamish b. 1783 Bedford Co., VA.

This is not an exact quote. I've tried to add some punctuation and expand some abbreviations. There is at least one conflicting statement about the James b. 1782 - in Bedford Co., VA or Greene Co., TN? I suspect it is
Bedford Co.

There is no mention of William F. or any children of Nancy & Reese McCamish. Maybe someone else can add to this.

Regards, Doug
I can't find a Jane McCamish or any variant from the 1750 timeframe in E.C.McAmis' book on McCamish marriages and he has done extensive work on the Greene Co. area.

There is a Jane McCamish (b. abt. 1782) who married a McPherrin and moved to Ohio and Indiana. There is a Jane (daughter of James) b. abt. 1798 and a Jane (dau.of Thomas) b. 1820 in Greene Co. who married a Brown. There was a Jane McCamish b. abt. 1760 who married a John Clendenning but they were in Pennsylvania.

Sorry not to be of help. If your Jane was b. abt. 1750, she would have been a sister of William, James, and Thomas - the brothers who were in Virginia and moved to Greene Co., (N.C.) Tennessee after the Revolutionary War.

Darby, do you have any information on the spellings of the name? I have informatoin from the mid-1799's in Ireland of the spelling McCamish but that may be the Northern Ireland spelling. Robert Bain's "The Clans and Tartans of Scotland" shows MacKeamish (sept of Gunn). The large branch with roots in Greene Co. TN uses McAmis (with strong connection to McCamish in the 1700's).

Thanks, Doug

Darby, can you tell us more about the link you found? It sounds like you found the marriage of James McCamish and Ann Innes in some record. What kind of record?
They then appear in southwest Scotland - where, exactly, and what kind of record? Do you have any idea what happened to them next?
I wish I had information for you. The name Ann Innes is ringing a bell but I can't find it in my records so far.
Do you know the names and birth dates of other children?
Did any of them emigrate to the colonies (before 1776) or to the United States (later)?
You have done a fantastic job already finding what you have found.
Thanks, Doug

Good Grief!! I'm going to have to diagram that to untwist it. Thanks for digging it all out. It does point out the necessity of using dates and locations to keep things straight.

You had me confused for a couple of days. (Not hard to do.) Nancy E. McCamish (I think) was the daughter of Frederick and Sarah Whitehouse. She was the seventh child. I have a lot on this family in general as Frederick was my g-g-grandfather. Frederick was the son of Isaac who was the son of "old" William who settled in Green County, TN.

One of the early genealogists in our family was Mrs. Hettie McCamish Best. I missed the note about the Best in the earlier post. Ira McCamish was another family historian. I've lost track of most of that group. Let me know where you have questions.

I suspect that this family is connected to the larger McCamish family branch centered in San Antonio, TX.
I don't remember the exact source now, but there was a Doctor McCamish in that area by about 1845*. I think he came from Missouri. One member of the San Antonio family did some research in the last 20-30 years but I don't know what happened to it and I was too late in trying to contact them. I don't know how that branch connects to the old Greene County, Tennessee family.

*Dallas Public Library genealogy card catalog.
