Cindy,
I wondered if you have any additional information about William and Rosanna - their place of birth, parents, etc. from Ireland? I know from the book I mentioned in an earlier email that they immigrated from the Letterkenny area, but I'm not for sure that they were born there. Has your research uncovered anything specific from Ireland? We are going there the end of July and wanted to visit their place of birth. We will be going to the National Library in Dublin to do a little research, but wanted to know if anyone had any additional info before we go.
Thanks,
Lou (McCarron) Sears
Cindy,
Sounds like we're cousins! I found the information in the book I mentioned earlier (Black Powder White Lace) really interesting. I knew that William and Rosanna came over around 1837, but didn't know why they came then rather than because of the famine. We are going to Ireland (Dublin and Sligo) and plan to go up into the Letterkenny area in Donegal where they were from. There are several McCarrons still in the area just from doing internet searches. I'm not sure where Charles is buried, but several of the McCarrons (including my Gr Grandfather Patrick) are at the Big Springs Cemetary in Washington County. Have you found that site yet on the internet? It's quite interesting.
Take Care,
Lou
Mary Frances,
It doesn't sound like it's the same line. My GrGr Grandfather William McCarron married Rosanna Gibbons in Ireland around 1830, had two children Charles (he was 6 when they came to the states) and Anna. They immigrated to Delaware via Philadelphia in 1837-38 to work at the DuPont Powder Mills along the Brandywine area outside Willmington. (If you Google the book Black Powder White Lace by Dr. Mulrooney you can read a portion of the book - it talks about the Powder Mills and mentions my GrGr Grandparents by name on p. 57.) They had my GrGrandfather Patrick McCarron in 1839. They had several more children and then moved to an area called Irondale, Missouri.
Hope this helps.
Lou (McCarron) Sears
Hello,
I also have a McCarron line--from Co. Donegal. My grgrgrandfather was Patrick McCarron born circa 1823. He came to the states--not sure when and I think he may have come via Canada. His wife was Catherine Faulkner--I don't know when or where they married. I do know (from death cert) that my Patrick's father's name was Andrew. I would be interested in learning more about your line--in hopes of finding a connection.
Since my last posting 2 years ago--I have found out the names of all my great great grandparents' (Patrick & Catherine)children. I believe that Patrick was from Co. Donegal and may have entered the United States via Canada. I have seen the name Patrick McCarron age 24 on the passenger list of the John Clark, which landed in New Brunswick 1847. I think it possible that this could be my great great grandfather and wonder how I can verify this? Any suggestions?
Marie

My name is William H. Gallagher, My GGgrandmother was Anna McCarron,
Daughter of William and Rosanna McCarron. I have a pretty good history of
the McCarron/Gallagher families. I would like to exchange information with
you. My biggest concern is trying to find records of my GGgrandfather
Michael Gallagher. I have a birthplace indication of Huningdon County PA but
have not been able to substantiate it or locate any early 1800 records to
support the assumption.I can print out the McCarron Gallagher linage in book
form (19 pages) and mail it to you if you would like.
Lets keep in touch and see if we can solve some of the riddles

William H.
Iam so happy to hear from you. I only met John and Rita once and recently wrote to John. I did not know that Rita had passed on. We will be going up to Nova Scotia about mid-july and would be very happy for you to come over and stay overnight if you wish. The ferry from St. John is not cheap, but it comes into Digby which is only about ten or fifteen minutes from where we live in Bear River. I really don't have very much on the family. I was hoping to make it one day to Long Island before I die but at my age, 82, I hardly think I will I'm glad there are so many ways to track families online like Ancestry. If you call and we're not here, please leave your phone number so I can call you. We have unlimited calling so it's not a problem for us. My grandfather McLaughlin was a beautiful person and I have very happy memories of him. Thanks for the message and I look forward to talking to you. Helen

I have recently signed up on Ancestry.com and have been reading some of the posts on McCarrons. My ancesters were William McCarron/Rosanna Gibbons who immigrated in 1837 from Donegal, Ireland to work in the DuPont Powder Mills along the Brandywine River area in Delaware. They were in the 1850 census and showed several children including Charles, Ann, Patrick, etc. My GGGrandfather was Patrick. He was the first to be born in America. Are these any of your ancesters?
Lou McCarron Sears

I definitely have a link to County Sligo with Hugh C McCarron (married Catherine Morgan), but he was born in 1837 and his family settled in East Liverpool.

My great grandfather (Hugh F McCarron 1876-1964, married Gertrude Nellie Bayley from Derby, England) and gradfather (Cyrus D. McCarron, 1901-1992, married Marion A Sell 1902-1995, from Los Angeles, CA) were both born in East Liverpool but moved to Los Angeles around 1906 or 1907. It sounds like your family was in the US prior to my McCarrons.

It seems as my part of the family was basically in East Liverpool and Los Angeles.

I have a McCarron line--my great great grandfather Patrick McCarron was born circa 1823 Co. Donegal. His father's name was Andrew. My Patrick settled primarily in MA (he did live for a time in NY). Thus far I have not found any siblings for him. His mother may have been Mary McLaughlin. His wife was Catherine Faulkner. I'm not sure when he came to the US--but his children were born in US from 1850's--to 1860's. As you mentioned McCarron is not an overly common surname, but it is not unusual in Co. Donegal--this may be where your line originates.
Marie

Looking for McCarrons/Caseys

I have a Patrick McCarron in my family tree, b. in Ireland about 1830, who emigrated to the U.S. (Louisville, Ky) in 1847. He is my g-grandfather's 1st cousin, but that's all I know about the relation, although I'm wondering if it may have been my gg-grandmother's maiden name. My g-grandfather was Peter J. Casey, b. in Ireland sometime between 1834-1841 and came to the states in the mid-1850's. I'm searching for more information on the Caseys so I can establish what part of Ireland they were from.
I do know that the Casey family "had a mill that went bust during the famine", according to family notes. I sure wish they'd bothered to write down what county they were from!

In researching, I discovered that McCarrons were distinctly from northern Ireland, so I'm assuming my Caseys must have been from either the midlands or the north, although for some reason we had always thought they were from County Cork.

Now I'm zeroing in on Roscommon for the Caseys and Leitrim for the McCarrons. We believe that Peter Casey also had a cousin named Bridget Flanagan from Corgowan, Kilglass, Roscommon. I found an ad in the "Search for Missing Friends" in the Boston Globe of Nov. 1859 posted by a Peter Casey living in Cincinatti (which mine was then, as he naturalized there in 1860 before moving to Louisville). In it, he posts a reward looking for this girl who was supposed to have arrived on a ship in NYC in Sept. but hadn't been heard from, and he said she was his cousin. So another clue!
Anyway, McCarron is a fairly uncommon surname so I'm hoping it will lead me to more info about my Casey family.

Oh, one other thing. In the 1850 Federal Census in Louisville, I found a Daniel and Robert McCarron living with the same person that Patrick was in the 1860 census. These could have been his brothers. I don't believe there was any relation to the person (Ormsby Hite) they were living with other than they worked in his nursery (small farm).
So if Patrick, Robert and Daniel McCarron are in any of your family trees, I would love to hear about it.

Many thanks,
Joyce

SO sorry for the long respite, just getting back to this.

Robert and Daniel are both listed as being 25 in the 1850 census, so born around 1825. In the census, there's also a James McCarron, age 38, a grocer, married with a son Daniel, 4. Sure hope you get back to this.

This is a long shot. My gggrandfather lived in the townland of Minahay/Minahaw/etc. Clonmany, Donegal. He, among other McCs is found there in the Tithes List of 1828 and there in the Griffiths Valuation c1857. There are 6 McCarron homesteads and one Doherty living in close proximity. Son ggrandfather Michael came to U.S. in 1854, lived in Mass. then some years later to Detoit, Mich. Had a brother Patrick, no info on him.

Hi! finally have gotten around to answering you. I believe we had contact a long time ago. I am from the Chicago McCarrons and I believe the patriarch of the family tho I have not lived there for decades. Our Macs are much more recent in origin in the U.S, than yours but that doesn't mean they are not the same clan since the McCarrons are of ancient gaelic origin even tho some are in Scotland. My most distant known ancestor, circa 1800 lived in the Townland of Altahalla in an area known even today as Minahaw but spelled a half dozen different ways. It is in the parish of Clonmany, Co. Donegal way up in the northern tip of the County known as Inishowen. The original Gaelic spelling was MacCaireain, also spelled a couple different ways. I believe there are or were, several different septs which anglized their names to McCarron, also occasionally with slightly different spellings. If you have a male McCarron relative you might get him to have his chromosome y-dna tested. This might pin down whether you are Nw Irish, as I am or perhaps from a sept in a different area. I would recommend World Family tree services altho there are others.
The northwest Irish designation just means that there is a concentration of a group pre-dating clans which lived in this area, Donegal and surrounding counties to a lesser extent and even into the lowlands of Scotland. I'm sure wordy today. I wish you luck but you already know that Ireland is a poor source for gen. records. Joe McCarron

I don't have a map handy. My McCarrons came from the area called Meenahaw (spelled a lot of differnt ways but can be found in some maps). It lies in the Townland of Altahalla, Clonmany parish. This is in the Inishowen. I think the Macs there at that time (1800s) were known as the "Hughis". Yes my ancestor was Hugh McCarron.

Also working there at the time wee his sons Bud (Charles),Bill ( your grandfather), and Walter, altho I don't think he was involved much. I guess you aren't Bonnie, is she your sister? I have done a lot of research on the family with varying success. Yes, I am pretty old but still reasonably coherent about things.

Dear Troyangell,
I haven't been checking genealogy sites as often because I am now legally blind and after awhile, even with my magnifyier, my eyes burn out. Thanks for your message. It wounds as if we are related. Are you, by any chance one of John and Rita's children? I wrote him awhile back. I didn't know Rita passed on. How sad. We exchanged notes and letters from time to time and I met her and John just once. On the McCarrons I have a little info. My grandfather was a child of Bernard and Mary. His name was Patrick and your grandfather is probably the uncle that my mother called 'Uncle Ned". I have a picture of my mother with Fr. Will, whom she loved very much. They corresponded for years and he visited us in Somerville several times. I can only go back to Mary and Bernard,(Barney). Her mother's name was Bridget but I have not been able to track the maiden name. I understand that Mary and Bernard are buried in different cemetaries. Perhaps one day, you might send piuctures of these. I will send you all I have, but I can't do this on line as I'm not very adept at it. My address is 13 Fairlawn Lane, Centereach, NY 11720, phone 1=631=732=6795. My mother left me a hand=written description of her Grandmother's house on Long Island and I have a cridely drawn map of where it was located. I always intended to visit there but I never made it. Will be up in Boston from Wednesday until Sunday, so will not be picking up mail after tonight. Thanks for your message. Helen G. Brinton.

Hi Jacqui,
I have a McCarron line--primarily in MA. I have a William F. McCarron, born 1874, MA. I don't know what happened to him, though I believe he was married for a time and had a daughter (Mildred). I do know that Mildred's mother remarried after a time. Not sure if this was the result of being a widow or a divorcee. William had an older brother, Edward J. McCarron, who married Ellen Austin, 1891, worcester MA. They then went to Chicago. They had 2 children that I know of, only one that lived--Bertha, 1893. Edward died in 1921. After the 1910 census I can't find Bertha--I presume she married. Does any of this seem to click with your family? If so, please contact me.
Marie

My gggrandfather George McCarron was supposedly born somewhere in PA in about 1796 and I have his family down to myself. George is buried in Jackson Co., IA the oldest of four generations of McCarrons buried in Mt Hope Cemetery. If I could just find George's parents, I could possibly get my connection to Ireland and Donegal where there are many McCarrons buried and I have been there and taken pictures of old cemeteries.
Joyce, I too, have McCarrons but it is like a big jig saw puzzle to put them in the correct place. In a write up regarding my great Uncle Wilbur Fiske McCarron in the book, "Tennessee and Teennesseans", page 2378 which can be read on Google if you are interested, it states there that he was #7 of 9 children but I have only been able to find 4 of them. Wilbur was born in 1841 in Harrison Co, Ohio then moved with his father to Iowa. From there he was in the Civil War and later moved to Tenn as you can read in the book on Google. I have never been able to get my connection to Ireland but there are a lot of McCarrons in Donegal. In your finding of Daniel and Robert did the record say how old they were? If they were born between 1826-1865 they could well be part of my McCarron list of children born to George McCarron. Another clue. Keep digging. Marge McCarron DeGear

I don't remember when I found some of these interesting things before or after the 70's but I have my George McCarron back to 1796 when he was born somewhere in PA. I have his family down to myself where he was married three times in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio and then on to Iowa where he is buried in Maquoketa,Jackson Co. along with his son and his family, four generations in the same cemetery including my father and mother. I finally made contact with Wilbur's family, one of Georges sons, who lived in Illinois so I never give up. Have you gotten anything more on your line of McCarrons since we were in touch? Did you ever get your connection to Ireland or Scotland. Don't give up. Marge

Hi Joe, Are you the same Joe McCarron with whom I corresponded in the 70's? If you are, we sure don't give up, do we. I am still working on my McCarron line but I have so many other things going on that I don't have the time that I would like to devote to it. I still have all of the good info that you sent me and maybe someday we can put it all together. I still have my gggrandfather George McCarron who was born in PA in about 1796 and that is as far as I have gotten. Four generations of McCarrons are all buried in the Mt Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa, Jackson Co, IA including George so I have all of that info down to myself. I have even been to Ireland and found lots of McCarrons in Donegal and do keep in touch with them but they are not interested in genealogy and so it goes. It just seems that Chicago being so close to where my McCarrons were, that there should be some connection and I never give up so keep in touch and if we live long enough we may be able to put something together. Your "cousin?" Marge McCarron DeGear

Hi Joe, I am not sure if I answered your last e-mail or not but if so, please just disregard this one. I am also working on McCarron genealogy and most recently I found a record in a book called Tennessee and Tennesseans in which there was a great write-up about my great Uncle Wilbur McCarron. In it there was a referance of him being #7 of nine children and I have only been able to find 4 of them. Wilbur was born in Smyrna, Ohio Jan 1, 1841 and was quite active in the Civil War. Wilbur is buried in the Nat'l Cemetery in Chatanooga, TN but lived in Jackson Co, Ia where his brother Hiram is buried as well as his father George McCarron, along with my father Edward and his father Lloyd Garrison McCarron, four generations all buried in the same cemetery in Maquoketa, Jackson Co., IA. At one time I tried to contact some McCarrons in Chicago but no response. If interested, I have much info on all of this, so please contact me at my e-mail address mmdma85208@aol.com. Thanks.
I, too am working on the McCarron line. In fact, I have been in Donegal but have not been able to find anyone who was interested in genealogy. My line is my father Edward to his father Lloyd Garrison, his father Hiram and his father George McCarron who was born in PA in aboutr 1796. My father Edward always told me we were Irish and to be proud of it but I have not been able to get any further. If you think there might be a connection, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.
