Joel McCarter

I am looking for information on Joel McCarter born 1791 in Maryland or Virginia. His name has changed on the census records to read McCarty, McCarter, McCartney and McCarthy. He married a Martha born 1799 in Pennsylvania. She is listed in 1883 in Illinois pension list as receiving money being a widow. I found a tree that has a Martha Sparks married to McCarthy but no first name or children.

If anyone has any information about these two, I would appreciate hearing from you

My gandfather was Samuel H. McCarter, born 1884. He was David's younger brother. I guess that makes us about second cousins once removed or something like that. I pretty much have the names and dates of my ancestor's, but, I am interested in oral history, any old family story past down. Send me an e-mail

Dear Darrell,

Oh my son and I were so happy that you posted. I did the Mccarter genealogy for my son, Chris Mccarter. I was married to Jimmy but we have been divorced for over ten years now. Chris would like to talk to you and darrell, do you have any more pictures? Here is Chris's email address:
cmccarternx01@hotmail.com. Chris can tell you all about Gene and Earl. Geneva was the best woman, I loved her very much and kept in touch with her even though jim and I got divorced. She is very missed.

Betsy Estepp

They had 3 sons David Durbro McCarter(my dad), Victor Quinn, & Wilburn Wayne McCarter. I understand that my Great-granddad was Joel McCarter & that my set of McCarter's are from the Walter McCarter set. Does anyone have any more information on this family???
I have been looking for information on my set of McCarter's . My dad's name was David Durbro McCarter & my mother's name was Myra Louise Philips McCarter & I was raised in Blacksburg S.C. My dad died Jan. 25, 1957 & was born around 1908-09. He had 2 brothers Wilburn Wayne McCarter from Grover, N.C. & Victor Quinn McCarter from Charlotte, N.C. All that I have about his parents(my Grandparents) are his father's name was Dave McCarter, do not know where he was from & Corrie Maudline Camp McCarter, I think most of my Grandmother's people were from around Shelby, N.C. Can you tell me where to look for information on my grandparents especially my Granddad?? Thanks a lot for your time!
Thanks for your reply, I have some information now on Barbara's parents and would appreciate more. They were reburied in Woodland Cemtery here in Dayton Ohio. I will be going there to take pictures. I also appreciate the birth date on Barbara, I had 1823 for her birth.

More info on Barbara: After her husband Eli Curtner passed away Barbara went to Union City, Randolph County, Indiana. Her daughter Kate who was born 27 Nov. 1854 in Randolph Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, married Harvey E. Moist from Pennsylvania and born 1853. They were married 7 September, 1882 in Union City, Indiana.

Harvey and Kate had a daughter named Nellie L. Moist born 26 Feb 1886 in Randolph County, Indiana. Sometime after Nellie's birth they moved to California and Barbara went with them. They settled in Oakland, Alameda County, California.

In the 1900 California Census I could not find Barbara, and Nellie was boarding with a woman named Carolyn Covell. Sad to say I did find some information on Barbara. There is a posting in the Oakland Tribune, dated August 19, 1897 under the ESTATES Section. "Barbara Curtner (Insane) application for letters of guardianship, made by Chas. E. Snook, personal property, $75.00" A reference to her death date is: 19 November, 1897. So far I have not found where she is buried but will continue to look.

Again thank you,and if you care to contact me personally my email is: tomcurtner@aol.com

Mary Jo,
I am so excited that you have information on the McCarter/McArthur family. Abraham McCarter would be my GGGGG Grandfather. From what I can find my lineage starts with my father, Ernest Lowell McArthur, son of Basil Analee McArthur, son of Walter James McArthur, son of Eleaser Elijah McCarter, son of Walter McCarter, sonof Abraham McCarter. I have very little information on Walter McCarter. I was told that he was born in 1744 (some have said York SC & others say Ireland) and died in 1833 in York SC and buried in Beershebe Cemetery. Any information you have that can verify the connection from Abraham to Walter James would be greatly appreciated.
It is important to me to get as much information as possible so my children and grandchildren will know their heritage. The more I learn about my ancestors the more it makes them become a real part of me.
Thank you for your time and effort,
Pat

Thomas A. McCarter

William C. (Clisby) McCarther b. abt. 1834 in S.C. married Lucinda (Lucinday) E. Lowrance and moved to Arkansas in 1870. William may be the son of Thomas A. McCarter b. 1804, but I can't be sure. We don't have any evidence that they are, but rather only have the evidence from Ancestry.com. I would like to find someone with information that might support that Thomas A. is William C.'s father.
Lucinday's mother was a Ferguson, and I have a copy of an old deed and copies of old letters that verify that Lucinday's sisters married a C. R. Falls and Andrew Kennedy. The old deed lists their name as McArter and McCarter, not McCarther, but again, these documents really deal with the Lowrance land, not the McArter/McCarters. These old letters verify that these families left Gaston County, Crowders Creek areas. One letter also mentions Bethany. They also mention the meeting houses - Presbyterian. I believe they were members of the Bethel congregation at some point. This is probably another case of the people who migrated to a new area lost touch with the old families left behind.
