Barb, I am being a pest. I realized that Lettertinish can be spelled Lettertinlish (extra letter L before "ish").

Just want to make sure you have checked the Castlehaven and Castlehaven South D.E.D.s of Cork in the 1911 census online. Looks like there are a good number of McCarthys in Bawnlahan, Toehead, Ballyisland, Drishane More, Forenaght, Lettertinlish, etc, etc.

Okay, now off to the FHC!

- Susan

Barb,

Meant to add, I do notice in the 1911 census there are McCarthys in Baltimore and a townland called Letter in a D.E.D. called Crookhaven, which I don't think is the right Letter.

I'm heading out right now to the family history center to look at McCarthys in 1901 census film - if I happen to stumble across Baltimore, Lettertinish, and Lough Hyne, I'll try and copy it.

Re: McCarthy of County Cork

Hi Barbara!

I just did a quick search of the Eircom phonebook, and indeed it looks like there aren't McCarthys in Baltimore, Letter (or Lettertinish), or Lough Hyne.

I've been told my McCarthys are McCarthy Sowney (Samhna). From googling around (and if the information is correct) there were two main branches of McCarthys, the Mor branch and the Reagh branch.

Within the Reagh branch are Samhna (Sowney), Foirsin, and Carthaigh. (This information is NOT easy to come by, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy!)

So there could be a connection, but it likely precedes the 19th century. I don't think my McCarthys lived down toward Baltimore. I think mine were more from Lissane, in Caheragh parish, Drimoleague and particularly Dunmanway areas.

I've been in touch with another McCarthy hunter (Leila Mayberry) and she and I seem to have family trees tangled up with each other. Her Margaret McCarthy looks very suspiciously like my great grandmother, but the two Ellens (sister of Margaret) we have just don't seem to match. So I have sent a research query to the GRO with a list of references to 17 Ellen McCarthys born 1870-1874 in this area, with a request to send me a copy of the birth record of any Ellen whose father is Cornelius and whose mother is named Mary. It should take about six weeks.

Skibgirl - My gr gr grandmother was Maria [pronounced Mariah] McCarthy from Letter [Lettertinish), Skibbereen. She was born ca 1815. Maria married Michael Minihane of Ballyally, near Lough Hyne, east of Baltimore., and had six children. It is said that we are of the Reagh/Riobach McCarthy clan.

I know that Maria had one brother, Daniel, who married Ellen Minihane, Michael's sister. They emigrated to Canada with all their children. I've found the names Charles and Patrick McCarthy in the Letter area in the 1800s. There are no McCarthys from this line currently living in Letter.

Do you think there might be any connection?

Barbara in St. Louis, MO

Leila,

I am right now researching the same Ellen McCarthy. I believe she was my Granddad's maternal aunt. I was told by my first cousin once removed Michael Collins of Bunalun that his dad's mom (and my granddad's mom) "had many sisters" and that "one of them was named Ellen."

My Granddad's mom was Margaret McCarthy. Her father was Cornelius McCarthy of Lissane. Her mother was very likely Mary Collins. Her husband was Humphrey "Humphrey Mickey" Collins. Granddad was one of their kids. She died in 1906 after giving birth to their 10th child.

I am aware of Margaret, Mary, and Ellen among those siblings. I have just asked Skibbereen Heritage Center to search the baptismals for *all* those McCarthy children.

You can see my family documents here:
http://www.sjbar.com/irishGenealogy
Hello, I am looking for my uncles son, who I think is named Rob. You would have been born in the 80's I believe, maybe the late 70's? Last we heard about you, you were a biker and maybe in a few scrapes with the law? Uncle Mike passed away in 2007 in WA state as well. He was born in CA Aug 1944 to Barbara C Wilson McCarthy Hughes and Thomas McCarthy (they both passed away in 1988). Not sure if you were given Uncle Mike's last name?

I have some information on the Mary Jane who married George Maybury of Killarney and who emigrated to Canada where she died in 1883. However, it suggests that Mary Jane married into the McCarthy family and her maiden name was Doran. She was a widow when she married George. My gggrandfather Denis was born 1775 and married Johanna Dillon.
James McCarthy Parents: Timothy McCarthy/Ellen

Hello fellow seekers,
I am trying to help a dear friend get started on recording some of her paternal family history. There is really very little known due to circumstances. I will list tidbits she knows and "family lore/tradition" in hopes someone, somewhere MAY have a few answers or shoves in the right direction.
James McCarthy born: abt. 1905-1909 *told he came with parents/siblings from Ireland to B.C Canada
died: USA, state of Washington...we suspect the Seattle area (Yes, we have seen the SSI death records..there are 2-3 possibilities)
married: abt. 1928-1930 *We presume the State of Washington
to: Carolyn Tackett
born: abt. 1910 * we are told her "people" came from Oklahoma/Missouri and moved west to California
James McCarthy's father:
TIMOTHY McCARTHY
born: County Cork, Ireland (or so tradition goes)
died: Canada?
wife's name is suppose to be ELLEN (no known maiden name)
they had approx. 12-14 children
I KNOW it isn't much to go on but am hoping some of the names may ring a bell with someone actively researching the family. Thanks for any help!

The above was my paternal grandfather. Born in Ireland, possibly Killarney or Kerry, about 1874. In 1901 he was staying in Hadleigh, Essex and in 1902 married Emily Olley. He had three sons : Gerald Olley 1904 (died at age 2 days), Patrick Olley, (born 1905, died 1960, Bernard Eugene, my father (born 1906, died 1975). Seeking information prior to 1901. He supposedly came from a big Catholic family and was thrown out by his sisters after joining the Salvation Army.
