McCartney/Macartney - Ireland/Aberdeen, Scotland
I am researching a branch of McCartney (Macartney/Macartnie/etc etc) that originated in Ireland.

John McCartney/Macartney was born in Ireland some time around 1787. I believe they lived in Lanark for some time and had children and then made their way up to Aberdeen. John was a journeyman soapmaker who died in 1865 in Aberdeen. I cannot properly make out the names on his death info regarding spouses, but I think it says he was married to Mary Weir and then Elizabeth Welsh (but I have found info for a John Macartnie married to Elizabeth Lynch...) I know he had a son John, possibly 2 daughters Catherine and Elizabeth and there is information of a son Hugh.

His son John, born some time between 1814-1821 in Lanark, married Elizabeth Mackie in Aberdeen. Their children that I can find are Elizabeth and Alexander. I believe they had other children or perhaps Elizabeth and Alexander went by other names, but I do know they had a son Robert who was born some time around 1847. This John was a Cooper.

Robert McCartney married Margery Mann in 1866 in Aberdeen. They had one son, William Mann McCartney born in 1867, and Margery passes away in 1868, Robert then married Elizabeth Hendry in 1870 and had two sons – Alexander born in 1871 and Robert born in 1872. Elizabeth died in 1876 and Robert married Isabella Grant in 1884. They had the following children: George Watt, Catherine, Isabella and Hugh Urquhart. Isabella passed away in 1889 and Robert had children and eventually married Jane Nicol. Their children were Albert, Daniel and Joseph. Robert died in March 1925 and Jane died in July 1925. Robert was a combmaker at one point.

Robert’s son William Mann McCartney married Jessie McKenzie Grant in 1898, and they had three children: William Mann born in 1901, Barbara Hepburn born 1910 and Jessie McKenzie born in 1905, all in Aberdeen.

William Mann McCartney jr is my grandfather and he immigrated and ended up in Vancouver, BC Canada.

I am trying to locate information on John Sr. who came from Ireland or any other members of this family. There were 2 Catherine McCartney’s (One died from burns who was married to Hugh Urquhart) and two Elizabeth’s. And many children born out of wedlock and a few of the family died while living in the poor house. I know one of the boys was a priest. And I think the family was catholic in origin and that is why I cannot find any birth records online.

If you have any of these names in your family or any information I would love to share what I have and learn more about what I don’t have. I can be emailed at bansheesoap@shaw.ca

Thank you for your time.
Hi Bill,
I just read your message today about a William McCartney that you are looking for. Would this be the Willam of Braxton Co, WV born about 1820 and was married to Charity Hickman and later to Mary Stout? If this is the one, I too have been searching for information on him. I have found a marriage record for him that stated that he was born in Harrison Co VA and that his parents were William and Elizabeth McCartney. I have read several message boards by a Harold Bright stating that Andrew McCartney Jr, son of Andrew and Susan Winebright may have gone by the name William. My William had a son named John William. There is a younger John born ~ 1789 in Botetourt Co VA (AKA Bath County VA) where others of Andrew Sr family came through and this John died in 1852 in Harrison Co. He could also be a John William. Given the proximity of where all the members of this family lived (Braxton, Lewis,Harrison Botetourte) I am pretty sure that my William had to come from Andrew Sr's line.

Anyway, after the long wordy paragraph, if this is your William or anyone else's. Please contact me at idaughert@radford.edu. I'd really appreciate any and all comments and will share what I have.

Thanks,
Iris

Andrew McCartney was my great great grandfather. I now have his military pension file. One letter after he died
said that Jennetta had divorced him 8 or 10 years prior to his death. Had remarried and divorced that man after Andrew had died. There is a handwritteb letter in the file from a W C McCartney who was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1890. He says that he had supported Andrew for 5 years prior to his death. Would be glad to mail copies to any descendants of Andrew. Also a handwritten note from a J B McCartney who was living in Ridgeville, Indiana in 1883. I know that Joseph B McCartney died in 1880 in Kansas as he was my great grandfather. Would be glad to hear from researchers looking into this family. Also my grandson went to the National Archives and found that Andrew's first wife and therefore Joseph's mother was a Roby. He is not familiar with genealogical research so did not get a copy nor a positive first name.

Re: origins of McCartney/Macartney

The origins of McCartney/MacCartney/Macartney/MacArtney are interesting & quite varied. Here are the following theories:
1. Origins from the irish MacCarthy Mor Clan. A 12th C. prince of subject irish clan was granted lands in Scotland by Robert the Bruce in GlenArtney. Supposedly, descendants moved down into Ayrshire and later moved back into Co. Antrim in 17th C. A historian by the name of Hunter writes of this origin. In his entry he also talks of a Macartney castle in Galloway that was used to house Christpher Seaton, a bor in law of Robert the Bruce. he stated that the macartneys were aliies of the Comyns & the english against Robert the Bruce. This appears to be contradictory from his original thesis unless there was a separate group of macartneys already in Scotland.but that is not made clear in the book.
2. Several modern day genealogists believe that the origns of Macartney come from Co. Down and come from the irsh MacCarton clan in south Co. Down & emigrated into galloway possibly in the 8th-9th C. A plausible theory but seems to lack documentation.
3. McCartney with variants as a sept of clan MacKintosh & caln Farquharson. It is claimed that macacrtney is a name of origin in the region of Fife & its number variants of machardy & Macardney. Another plausible theory particularly if you can trace your lineage to that area of Scotland (Fife-Aberdeen-Moy-Braemar) but most documented McCartneys were found down in Ayrshire.Dumfiesshire/Galloway with documented emigration into No. Ireland in the 16th C. during the time of the Plantations to Co. Antrim/Down/Armagh.

McCartney- West Virginia

I'm having a little trouble with the information I'm seeing regarding Andrew McCartney, born in Ireland in 1750 - married to Sarah Weinbright. According to information listed in various family trees, Andrew's father was Thomas McCartney born in 1859. Now I may be wrong, but I don't see how it's possible for someone to have a child born 100 years before the parents were born. Very confusing and possible wrong information?

Martin,

When you say "you can see them spreading out to many counties" do you mean out from Ardee?

So, if my McCartney came from County Louth, there's probably a good chance he came from Ardee? I did find a James McCartney listed as a flax grower in the year he traveled off to the US, so perhaps that's him or his father, though not much even after that can be found....

Thanks
Kaira

Re: McCartney, McArthur Ireland to Scotland. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayreshire. Ross & Cromarty.

I'd appreciate assistance here. Despite many years of research & disbelief of others (and mysef), I have just proven my Scots- McCartneys, from circa. 1860, used the name McArthur & McCartney.

John McCartney (born Glasgow 1826) was a miner, then mine supervisor, then mine manager, who adapted by becoming a McArthur.

A far 'respectable' name then the Irish connotations of McCartney. His Chidren followed. John married Agnes McLay, daughter of James and Mary Borthwick in 1850.

Agnes nee: McLay & John McCartney chidren-

Sons, went on to marry McLeod, Gowans, Muir, Landells-Burns and Wilson.

There were four female Chidren of John & Agnes. Isabella (married Cunningham). Her Dunlop & Garroway decendents are tracked down to USA & Canada.

Barbara & Agnes & Jane Jessie a mystery !! Possibly Agnes never married, Barbara ditto, Jessie Jane ditto.

Most were Miners (William, John & James), a plumber, my GG Father Robert and one House Painter, Alexander.

I think John McArtney / Mcarthur's Father was William (a Miner), Mother Barbara (a Grocer). Both born Glasgow. (Or were they really?)

Help me please, I have lots of records to provide.

Noelene

Yours is an interesting post I came across when trolling through ancestry.com McCartneys. I also have a GG Grandfather John McCartney living in a townland near saintfield but I do not know his wife's name. His father was Kennedy McCartney born 1792 so the dates might fit. I only know of one son whose was my G Grandfather Willian Alexander McCartney married to Eliza Ann or Ann Woods. Kennedy McCartney's wife was Agnes McClure

McCartney DNA Haplogroup E3b or E1b1b

Are there any other McCartneys out there in Haplogroup E3b or E1b1b? I did the male-line, Y-46 test with Ancestry.com during their half-off sale (under $100) and I'm predicted to be in the E3b or E1b1b haplogroup. Specifically, I'm predicted to be in the E1b1b1a2 (V13+) group.
My results are on Ancestry.com, Ybase.org, Ysearch.org, and at www.haplozone.net/e3b/project.
So far, my closest genetic match (29 of 32 markers found at www.haplozone.net/e3b/project)is with a McCarty family, also tracked back to the mid, late 1700s in Pennsylvania.
E3b is a fairly interesting haplogroup as I think it only makes up about 1-3 percent of the population in Britain, where I assume my ancestors originated. There are some indications that my family also had ties to pre-revolutionary Virginia.
Free testing is available at SMGF.org with a submitted four generation chart, but their service is SLOW. I sent my sample in a year ago in December and results still aren't posted. I finally broke down and ordered a commercial test.
It would be nice if there were more McCartney results available.
John McCartney, Seattle

A friend found a listing of this early arrival in America. It may be my gggg grandfather, or perhaps it's yours. I haven't been able to link him up with other data, other than a listing confirming his arrival on Ancestry.com.
John McCartney, Seattle
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

The Original Scots Colonists of Early America 1612-1783
By David Dobson
ISBN 0-8063-1239-4
Third Printing
Page 167
No. 3442, McCartney, William, Born 1754, husbandman, Res. Queenshill, Shipped* in May 1774 from Stranraer to New York on the ship Gale.
Source: London Public Records Office T47.12

* Shipped indicates a voluntary move. The only other McCartney in this book Agnes McCartney indicates that she was a Jacobite from Ulster who was transported to America against her will.
Husbandman is variously defined as a farmer, stock raiser or tenant farmer.
