Thank you so much for your answer. I had not looked closely at the Charles in 1870 in East Lackawannock, because I had assumed he was the Charles, son of Thomas, who had been in East Lackawannock in 1850 with his wife Rebecca. That Charles moved on to Knox, Morgan, Ohio. I don't know which Charles is in East Lackawannock in 1870 with his wife Jane.
However, your next clue on Charles with the widow Anna in ancestry, I am sure is the one I am searching for. When I look at the image on ancestry, it does list Co. I, 8th Iowa Inf., with Anna applying as the widow in what appears to be 1862 Sept 11, and a minor grandson?(Gdns)applying 1869 Sep 17. There is no state listed. The grandson Samuel's last name appears to be Sain, although I am not sure of the first letter "S". It could be Pain, Rain, or something else. This confirms the finding that I had Charles enlisting in Co. I, 8th Iowa Infantry.
Thank you for giving me additional places to search.
