I have been searching for information about my maternal great grandfather for more than 40 years. This is what I know about him. In his marriage application he says that he is Charles B. McClain. I do not know what he “B” stands for. He was born ca 1856 according to the 1880 census. He says that he was born in Ohio, that his Mother was born in Ohio, and that his Father was born in Maryland. He married Rachel Ellen McClerney on August 4, 1878 in Fayette County, Indiana. They had one son, Herbert (NMI) McClain, who was born in the same location January 28, 1881. His parents were divorced between 1881 and 1894 at which time his Mother remarried to Horace Lewis in the same county. I have located three possible Charles McClains in the 1870 census but have not been able to confirm if one of them is he. I cannot confirm him in the 1900 or 1910 census. The child, Herbert, according to family stories, was basically raised by his Mother’s sister, Mary Ann (Moll) Robinson who lived in the same neighborhood. All of the descendants are dead. Can anyone offer any suggestions or information to help me?.........Robert E. Price
