Just curious where you got your info? I have found something that says that Alexander McClain was the founder of our church, Hickory Ridge Church. It's located just over the Brown County line in Adams County, Ohio. (He also founded another church, I think) If anyone has any more information on Alexander McClain please contact me at winter@hickoryridgechurch.com There's a little bit of info on him on our site. Thanks in advance. There's also a portrait of him out there somewhere.

Right you are, about slaves taking the names of their owners. Sometimes however, they took the names of their 'first' owners, and if sold didn't change their names. Looking at the slave owners when Ben's family was last found may not be helpful ...especially considering there were quite a lot of McLEAN, etc. families owning slaves there.

I know it's difficult to track them before 1860, but my interest at this point is curiosity and because I have an unknown set of parents that were in NC about 1780 who gave birth to my gggg grandfather Charles McLAIN. Several of us have worked on this line for years, but more data is being put online all the time, and more documents in the Ancestry archives. Never know what I might turn up by taking a 2nd, or 3rd look at places we've already looked at in the past.

And also, I've got quite a few lines that were in the Carolinas ..including my husband's lines, so I am always stumbling on possibilities to consider. I keep trying to think of the cup as half full, rather than half empty, lol.

As someone who has studied that period of history, typically slaves took the last name of their owners, so the name "McClain" is probably the last name of the planation owner where the slaves worked. It would be very difficult to trace that lineage.

Many McLEANs on the 1860 Slave Schedule as owners in Harnett County. I'm amazed. Ancestry still has the Mc separated from the rest of the name...I thought they had corrected most of those mistranscribed Mc names, but appareantly not.

A.D. McLEAN
A. McLEAN
Cy M. McLEAN
Peter McLEAN, Neill McLEAN,
Nancy McLEAN
D.C. McLEAN
Barbara McLEAN
Peter McLEAN
Duncan McLeAN
D.M. McLEAN
Malcom McLeAN
J. McLEAN
Archd McLeAN (would be Archibald)
Mary McLEAN
Dane McLEAN
....and on and on. There are 5 pages of McLEANs who were owners of slaves in Harnett County. I am going to also take a look at the US Genweb for that county in NC. The US Genweb is a free site with all the states and counties in each state, run by volunteers who gather and post data online. There are also the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh (a little online, but not as much as SC Archives has) ...and there is also the possibility I can find more in the library, as well as the Court House.

I might stumble on my own white McLAIN family and who knows where that will go. Slaves are often named in wills, which is helpful to people researching their 'black' families. I'll let you know if I find anything helpful.

Looks like you have gotten some great help from another researcher, which helps to find even more.

As the other researcher said, your McCLAINS will be listed only on Slave Schedules, and looking at Harnett County NC in 1860, I have so far found 2 men with slaves: Hector McLEAN and Thomas McCLAIN (who is in error as McCLAM in the transcription). These men are on the same page. Hector has more slaves that Thomas, but there is a possibility that Hector and Thomas are related in spite of different spelling of their surnames.

I am attaching that page for you to look at. It does list the ages of the slaves and perhaps that will be helpful to study. I'm curious about these two men and if I learn anything about them, I'll let you know. I probably will not learn any more about your family unfortunately, but maybe I can find something to give you some historical knowledge.

More Info on the US 1930 Census. Your Ben states he ..and his parents ..were born in North Carolina, but Emma states born in FL and parents born FL. Instead of being born 1880, in 1930, he is shown as older, born 1872 NC. (I'll also see what the 1920 says.) In 1930, they are at bottom of one page and continue to top of next page...I am attaching 2 pages of the 1930 census.

I also found Ben shown in the Florida Death Index, 1951, Jackson Co Florida. You should be able to order the record from the County. Unfortunately, the index shows only the year, no month, but you may still be able to order it with the info available. The Bureau of Vital Statistics of the State Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services, P.O. Box 210, Jacksonville, Florida 32231, has custody of birth and death records filed from January 1917 to date.

OK ..back to Ancestry.com which I am researching to find all this data. I will keep stepping back in time and see what I can find. My own McLAIN ancestry is 'white' and supposedly my gggg grandfather Charles (who settled in West TN in 1820s) was born abt 1780-85 timeframe in we think NC. He's my brickwall ..can't find his parents.

Back later...
Audrey in TN

Hi, I cannot help out with Emma's parents or maiden name, but I did a lookup in the census records on Ancestry, and here is what I found, going backwards from 1930.

(If you are not familiar with census records, the notation FL NC NC, for example, means that the individual was born in Florida and their parents in North Carolina. The order is Self Father Mother.)

1930 census of Cottondale, Jackson Co., Florida, enumerated 19 April:
McLane, Benjamen, 58, age at first marriage 19, b. FL NC NC
Emma, wife, 48, age at first marriage 17, b. FL FL FL
Ed, son, 28, single, b. FL NC FL
Sidney, son, 26, married, age at first marriage 18, b. FL NC FL
Sandy, son, 19, single, b. FL NC FL
Ada L., dau, 17, single, b. FL NC FL
Maggie, dau, 15, b. FL NC FL
Vera, dau, 14, b. FL NC FL
Alnore, granddau, 6, b. FL FL FL
Mandy, granddau, 5, b. FL FL FL

Race for all is listed as Neg. Ben, Ed, Sidney, and Sandy are all laborers at a turpentine mill. Ada L. is a cook with a private family. Although Sidney is listed as married, not widowed or divorced, his wife is not in the household. Perhaps she was a live-in servant somewhere?

1920 census of Cottondale, Jackson Co., Florida, enumerated 24 Jan:
McLain, Ben, 45, b. NC NC NC
Emma, wife, 26, b. FL FL FL
Ben Jr., son, 17, b. FL NC FL
Sidney, son, 14, b. FL NC FL
Sandy, son, 9, b. FL NC FL
Ada Lee, dau, 7, b. FL NC FL
Mandy, dau, 5, b. FL NC FL
Vera, dau, 3, b. FL NC FL

Race for Ben is listed as Mu, for the others as B. Ben's occupation is teamster at turpentine camp, Ben Jr.'s and Sidney's as laborer at turpentine still. Ben Jr. is apparently the same son listed as Ed age 28 in 1930.

1910 census of Cottondale, Jackson Co., Florida, enumerated 12 May:
McLean, Benjamin, 41, b. FL FL FL, laborer at turpentine
Emma, wife, 26, b. FL FL FL, laundress, mother of 5 children, 2 living
married 6 years, first marriage for both
Bennie, son, 7, b. FL FL FL
Sidney, son, 5, b. FL FL FL

Race for all is B.

I have not found a good match for Ben in the 1900 census. He would be about 32 and presumably single.

I am pretty sure he is the son Ben age 8 in this family in 1880. There is no other good age match, and the name Sandy is uncommon enough that having a son Sandy makes a father Sandy more likely:

1880 census of Lillington, Harnett Co, North Carolina, enumerated 9 June:
McLean, Sandy, 50, laborer; Mary, wife, 31; Bettie, 20, dau; May, 16, dau; Caroline, 14, dau ; Rose, 12, dau; Becky, 10, dau; Ben, 8, son; Cora, 6, dau; Hattie, 1, dau. All black. All born NC NC NC.

That of course would be the earliest census Ben was listed in.

Mary is apparently a second wife:

1870 census of Lillington, Harnett Co., North Carolina, enumerated 25 July:
McLean, Sandy, 40; Peggy, 38; Charles, 13; Bettie, 10; Margaret, 8; Caroline, 6; Rebecca J., 2; Mary, 2. Race for Sandy is M, for all others is B. All born in NC.

Judging by the 7 year gap between the births of Cora and Hattie, it is most likely that Peggy rather than Mary is Ben's mother.

There was another Sandy McLean in the censuses of Harnett Co., 5 years older than Ben's father, and one about 15 years younger, so it seems to be a name that runs in the family.

I could not find any match for Sandy in the 1860 census, but before 1870 blacks are unlikely to be listed by name, unless they are free.

To help you get started, I found your grandparents family on a 1935 Florida State Census. They are a 'colored / black' family and Benn as his name is shown was born about 1880, wife Emma. It is common for names to be spelled a variety of ways on census rolls.

So in 1935 they are in Cottondale, Precinct 15 of Jackson County, pg 50, Line 11, S5 Series, Roll 16. Whole family is shown as born in Florida
Benn age 55 father, Occupation Pulpwood
Emma 50 mother Housewife
Ada Lee 23 daughter Cook
Sandy 21 son, Paper Wood
Maggie 20 daughter Cook
Vera 15 daughter
Maude 10 daughter
James L 2 son
Leroy 2 son
Sarah 1 daughter

Sid McCLAIN age 27 working in Pulpwood is enumerated below Benn's household. Sid must be the Sidney you mention, another son of Benn & Emma.

I will save and attach an image of the census page here. And perhaps I can find more now that I had luck finding this record.

I am wondering about the spouse of James McClain b 1807, Tennessee. Some trees state Mary Hutcheson and some state Mary Oakes.

On the back of James McClain's son's marriage certificate of the marriage of Richard A.
Like you my McLAIN lineage is from my maternal grandmother, Audrey McLAIN. She was b Jan 1 1900 Newport, Jackson Co AR and died in Nacogdoches TX (Audrey McLAIN WASHBURN) in 1994. However, her daughter, my mother, is still alive, a few cousins ...but the biggest help I had was from what has been handed down to me from Audrey McLAIN's mother Clara COOPER McLAIN b 1878 Monroe Co AR, died 1979 (almost 101 yrs old) and is buried in Little Rock AR. I have boxes of old photos, her scrapbooks, an old address book, little notes, cards ...AND a few bibles. I got info from all of these things.

Yes, I absolutely agree with you that the Clan MacLEAN dna project is not managed like some other sites that with the Patriarch information. And only a few of the DNA candidate have the brief GEDCOM posted. That means that, when no GEDCOM is posted ..and the candidate fails to post their markers to the Y-Search (so I can compare our markers) and also hopefully see at least a sentence about their lineage, then my only choice is to try and reach the candidate (or the sponsor) by email. Thank goodness we at least have the email address.

But even when I email, I do not always get a response. I can't imagine why somebody would spend the money to DNA test and then not take full advantage of the opportunity to learn so much from the project. The best way to learn more is to help each other ...by posting a GEDCOM and enter the markers in the Y-search.

Clan MacLEAN does have an interesting website, but why in the world they don't help us out with more genealogical help is beyond me. I wrote just the other day to request that somebody find a way to stress the importance of ...or to require ..the posting of a GEDCOM. The Patriarch data would take the place of a GEDCOM for those people who do not have electronic files for their records.

However, all that said, several of us cousins researching together have been able to communicate with some of our best matches...adding more information and another person to help us work to find a link between our DNA matched lineages. So I have no regrets at all about participating in the FTDNA project for McLAIN variety spellings under Clan MacLEAN project. It is just my opinion that the genealogical help they could provide if willing would be a lot more beneficial to all DNA participants than the website for Clan MacLEAN.

Have you DNA tested this line of McCLAIN? You have choices for genealogical DNA testing ...Ancestry.com, FTDNA (FamilyTree) nothing to do with the family tree software, and other companies. My McLAIN line has been tested through FTDNA's Clan MacLEAN project for all spelling variations, and we researchers who thought we were related already had research on our own lines ..but we had gaps in the paper trail and could not connect to a TN line we thought we related to. The DNA proved we linked to that line.

We tested on 67 markers (the most FTDNA offers for the male Y-DNA) and we had matches with various other people who tested from 12 to 67 markers. The 37 to 67 marker matches were the most revealing as it narrowed down the field of matches to those most closely related...and we have been able to discuss our genealogy with that of the various matches. Basically, that is the advantage of DNA testing. You find matches with whom you can discuss and compare and research your lines. The matches might be in Scotland or here in USA or elsewhere in the world...and might show a very distant kinship, even on a relatively close DNA match. Such as 66 of 67 markers (or even exactly on 67 markers) or 35 of 37 markers and so on. The kinship could be 5 to 10 generations or more, with an exact match indicating (as I understand it) a direct father to son kinship, on back through time.

So, in lieu of finding descendants on the line, or documentation and records to help you, DNA testing might be the best way to learn new info. Don't be surprised by the non-surname matches, and don't discount those matches with different surnames. That might be a good lead.

Good luck.

Hello,

My Taylor/McLain connection came in Baltimore Maryland around 1730. Margaret Taylor and John McLain married there. I also have a Taylor/McLain connection in Reno NV with Clark McLain and Judith Taylor in 1880.

Are David McLain and your Taylors related to the John McLain and Rachel Jones clan? Do you think this David McLain of Ky has Taylor DNA?

My DNA line has a R1b1b2 haplotype. I see that your Taylors and David McLain are E1b1b1 haplotype. So at least we know that my McLain group would not be part of that parental event.

Regards
Terri

Family reunion got in the way and I didn't reply to your May e-mail.

You mentioned a McClain ancestor may have intermarried with a Taylor family. Were you able to resurrect that information?

I have two 1st cousins in the FTDNA Taylor Surname project. They match each other exactly but they also match a McClain exactly at 67 markers which is good, but mysterious.

I suspect this McClain/Taylor connection probably is from the late 1600's or early 1700's in VA. We have a Robert Taylor b. ca 1703/07? Our non-Taylor cousin thinks this Robert T. is a descendant of Abraham Taylor but we have no concrete proof of this.

In every brick wall I have had, something "unusual" had happened, perhaps a widow bringing children to the next marriage, changing the children's names, neighbors leaving orphans, etc. There is no bastardy record, so we aren't thinking that is the case.

The McClain 100% match thinks they descend from a David McClain who went to KY but it was very likely in the early 1800's. The sponsor lives in the UK, had just moved back when we began corresponding, remodeled an older home and hadn't gotten her research out - so David McClain was all she gave me.

Do you have anything to share on the McClain/Taylor marriage?

Thanks for anything you can provide.

Nita

Terri, Thank you for your information. No, the DNA results would absolve your McClain group from any part in this genetic connection.

In those very early days, when parents died, whether by family or neighbors, children were taken in by whomever could, or would, take care of them, frequently changing their surname. This really causes a problem for genealogists unless there is a "story" in the family telling of a widow bringing children into a marriage, changing the surname, or some other unfortunate incident as noted above, we don't have a record to refer to that accounts for the change of name vs DNA results.

Since this McClain matches our Taylors 100% at 67 markers, beyond a doubt we are closely related but it may be as far back as pre-Colonial day England/Ireland/Scotland. We running down every lead and making a note of what we find.

This David McClain is believed to have come to KY early 1800, I believe, and they don't know who David's parents are, nor do they know exactly when he arrived in the US.

I doubt I will solve this in my lifetime but I really appreciate your time and trouble to give me your information. I will store your info away.

Thanks a bunch.

Nita

John McCLAIN, b.PA abt 1813, son of Joseph and Sarah (BEBOUT)McCLAIN

I am trying to track down the John McCLAIN who was the son of Joseph and Sarah (BEBOUT) McCLAIN. He is named as an heir in his father's 1862 will, probated 1864. John inherited real and personal property as did his siblings living in Pennsylvania. The two children who lived in Iowa were left money, so I suspect John was in PA at the time of Joseph's death.

There is a John McCLAIN aged 20-30 in the 1840 Census in Lackawannock, Mercer Co., PA, enumerated immediately after his father, Joseph. John has only a female 20-30 living with him. In the 1850 Census West Lackawannock, Mercer Co., PA there is a John Mc CLAIN 35, wife Sarah (unknown maiden name) 35, OH, and children Aberry (male 9), Jane E. 6, Joseph C. 4,Sarah C. 2, and Charles F. 5/12.

This same family, with 2 more children, seems to appear in Oswego, Kendall Co. Illinois in the 1860 as McCLANE and 1870 Censuses as McCLAIN. From Civil War records the oldest son appears to be Alvah M. McCLAIN who dies in Mississippi in the Civil War. There are 2 additional children Albert born about 1853 in PA and Mary T. born about 1857 in Illinois. I can find no other evidence of the John McClain family in Illinois, no marriages, no cemetery records.

There is a possible appearance of son Joseph C. as Carson McClain in the 1880 Census in Clarke Co., Iowa.

Does anyone have any information to prove or disprove the parents of THIS John McCLAIN or to offer further suggestions as to how I might locate the correct son, John, of Joseph and Sarah (BEBOUT) McCLAIN.

Thanks for all you generous help.
Nancy Smith

I am looking for a Uriah McClain b 1831 TN D about 1918 TN. He lived with his wife Elizabeth W Scott in the 1900 Hardin co census. My ggrandmother was a dau, Sarah Ellen and she is on this census with my grandfather Charles Tatum and his sister Clemmie living with her parents. The records are transcribed as Oscar but I believe his name wasx Uriah. Her husband Richard D Davy died about 1897. Does any of this sound familiar? I can not find the Uriah and his family before 1900. May be they were in Wayne co, TN? Any help would be appreciated.
Pat Sullivan Foster

I am researching my McClain's from TN and I was wondering if you knew if Newbern had a sister named Sarah Ellen. I have been looking for Sarah Ellen's family and in 1880 census a Neuban and Elizabeth McClain had a dau named Sarah Ellen b in TN about 1873. My ggrandmother was Sarah Ellen McClain and the only time I find her on a census is in 1900 Hardin Co., TN but her father is listed as Oscar McClain w/mother Elizabeth. Sarah Ellen died in CA in 1961 and it says on her death certificate that her mothers maiden name was Scott. Do you know if this family might be connected?
Pat sullivan Foster

Tennessee James McClain married to Oakes or Hutcheson?

I am wondering about the spouse of James McClain b 1807, Tennessee. Some trees state Mary Hutcheson and some state Mary Oakes.

On the back of James McClain's son's marriage certificate of the marriage of Richard A. McClain and Mary A Vannorman, Richard states that his mother's maiden name was Mary Oakes. However, I cannot find any record of such marriage of a Mary Oakes to a James McClain in Tennessee. Could Mary Oakes be Mary Hutcheson?

Thank you,
Flynn

McClains in Illinois, Idaho, Montana

I am looking for anyone with information about the McClains who had a child, Henry McClain about 1857 born in Illinois. There is no record of his birth in Illinois; he says he was born in Illinois on the 1880 census. In 1860, a Samuel McClain is living next door to George Yearian but there is no record of a Henry in the household; there is a Hue McClain who would be the same age as Henry. In 1880, he is living in Idaho with the George Yearian family and working as a farm hand. However, on the 1880 census, Henry says that both his parents were born in Illinois; Samuel and his wife were both born in Scotland.

Henry married Kate Hawley in Beaverhead MT, who died around 1910 and was buried in Beaverhead MT. Henry and Kate had several children, but only one son married and had children: Harry McClain, who is my husband's great - grandfather. Harry lived in Lemhi, Idaho and became a sheriff or politican of some kind. We have heard that Harry was 6'6" tall with black hair like an Indian.

Harry's son Edmund (we beleive he was the only son) had two sons, one of whom died as an teen and the other was my husband's father, Thomas Jay McClain. Thomas Jay had only one son, my husband, Thomas Troy. We have two sons who will carry on this line of the McClain family. Otherwise, there are no known living males from this line.

Family legend says that the first McClain from this line came from Scotland and married a full blooded Nez Perce woman. He supposedly died young, and the widow handed over the baby to be raised by a family with the last name of Hampshire or something similiar to that name. We have found some McClains from the pre civil war era that can be tied to the name Hampshire, but we cannot connect them to Henry McClain.

We are certain that our line of McClains are Scottish - they all look like the McClains of Duart - check the noses, the are all the same, long thin wonderful look. We are not convinced on the Native American heritage - there is no proof of that in looks or connection.

Any help you can provide would be wonderful: tchrlmcclain@verizon.net

I am also very interested in the McClain project in FTDNA. A couple of cousins of mine submitted material to the Nichols Surname project.

McClain is my great grandmother's family. I was so disappointed when I accessed the McClain/McLean site and saw that only the results were posted, no patrilineage information (like we have in the Nichols site). My problem is that I have never met any of my McClain relatives. Indeed I was born many years after my great grandmother passed away. So I have no one to ask to join the project.

My line descends from Lewis Dennis McClain b. abt 1826, earliest known location was Pike/Jackson Co. Ohio. This family migrated to Missouri. Lewis is our brick wall. Family lore says that they were surveyors and were one of the very early settlers of Ohio. They also moved around a lot because of their profession. We suspect that they originally came from Maryland, around Washington County, but can get no further on our suspicions.

Any of the McClain families in FTDNA connect to this region of Ohio?
