McClearys of Lewisburg West Virginia

I am trying to locate information on the decendents of Patrick McCleary and Mary Donnelly of Lewisberg, West Virginia (Virginia). Patrick was born in Ireland in approximately 1838. Mary Donnelly was born in Virginia, now West Virginia in about 1838. They had 11 children, all born in Lewisberg. I believe that Patrick McCleary is the half brother of my great grandfather James Cleary. Patrick changed his name to McCleary because of prejudice against the Irish in the 1860s. I have been able to track several children living in Virginia, Florida, and Washington, DC through the 1930s. If anyone has any further information on the family, I would be interested in connecting and tell our family story of how a Cleary and McCleary were brothers.

Anna:

You and I should exchange information! I'm descended from James T.'s children from his first marriage. I have a copy of Joseph's estate documents (Will, administration) and some other stuff on the rest of the family. Outside of birth, death, census and probate information, I don't know anything about Joseph's parents or names of brothers and sisters.

Joseph's wife was named Mary Ann Boyd. I have pretty concrete proof of that and quite a workup done on her family now.

Most of Mary Ann's children ended up in Kansas and Missouri and I have stuff on that as well.

Looking for anyone who may have a connection to a Joseph McCleary. Born around 1823 in Pennsylvania. Lived in Chester county West Nottingham. His spouse was Mary(I believe her maiden name was Boyd but not 100%) The had children James T, Robert H, Margarett, and George W. Our line comes through Robert H(Ida spouse. They moved to Harford Maryland)->George W.->George Emmett sr.->George Emmett->John George Emmett->John. Have some clues that Josephs parents may be a Thomas and Margarett from Ireland. But nothing concrete. Took a break from for several years from looking and seems I am still stuck in the same place lol. If anyone has any connection to this family at all or any information it would be appreciated and I will gladly share any info that I have on them. Thanks
Anna

Hi,

I have John's death certificate and it does look like Thomas and Margaret are his parent's names. It's definitely Thomas, although Margaret appears to be "Maryant" or "Margant", so I would guess it was Margaret.

Sorry very little is known about John and if he had a previous marriage. I know he served in the 1st Battery of the Royal Irish Artillery, I believe his son John Patrick was born ca 1849 possibly in Dublin, and Edward (my g-g-Grandfather) was born in Woolwich, barracks were situated at both places.

I think he had 2 other males and one female children with Elizabeth although I don't know their names.

Edwards' birth cert shows Elizabeth's last name as "Smtih", yet John's death cert shows it as "Smyth". I'm unsure which is correct.

I will email you as well.

Elizabeth died in 28/9/1896 in Wellington. (Papers Past - Evening Post, Volume LII, Issue 108, 28 September 1896, Page 4) and is buried at Karori Cemetery . Her grave is in the Roman Catholic section. That said, only McCleary, there is no first name, but given the service date, the date she died and the age, I believe this is the right grave. I plan to request her death certificate soon.

ALso, my grandmother was Catholic as were her parents (Edward Levi and Rosina Beatrice MARSH) so I'd guess John and ELizabeth Catholics, but I can't be sure. From what I know there hasn't been any suggestion of presbytarians.

John's death cert states he was married ca 1846 in Lurgan.

How wonderful to hear from you.

A few years ago a friend mentioned she had been approached by someone in your tree about McClearys. I had no information to offer, but now I see John's name on St Peter's birth records for son John.

This family member said that the names Thomas and Margaret appeared as parents on John's death certificate. Can you guess the likelihood that these are the real names? Are you sure these names are really there as it is often hard to read old names and Margaret and Mary can look alike. Thos and Jno and Jos have also thrown me.

Andrew McCLeary of Corcreany had an older son Thomas with unknown wife who were having children by 1822. Thomas Mc and ELizabeth Jones were having children a few years later. There are Thomases I can't connect to Andrew's line who might be additional people.

I think Andrew was Church of Ireland and not at Seagoe Parish Church, so I can;t see his records. Thomas and ELizabeth were Presbyterian and I do see them. I should be able to find a Presby John born about 1820 and on but records look a bit incomplete before that. Is there any talk in your family about John's previous religion? Any hint about parents? Were there any hints he was married earlier?

The only hint I have found is that a William Mc was living at Laverty Court of Ballyblough in 1863ish and John was said to be in Ballyblough in 1850. However, I can;t tell which William and whether it is significant.

One of the Williams is a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Jones which looks very much like my line. However, they did not go to the same Presby church, so they were not on myfamily's 70 year old tree. Also, Wm. became Church of Ireland. I am not finding the other Wm today.

I will be glad to send the bits and pieces I have. conard_kc at hotmail dot com
Samuel was probably in the army there.
I have info on her life in England up to her death, but I cannot find any other reference to her in Ireland or any of the family there.
Peggy, enjoyed reading your posts. I am a grandson of Albert Hodgson and Minerva Gennetta McCleary. I have done considerable research on the family. Alford and Almartha, and it was Alford and not Alfred, had eleven children. My great grandfather, Jesse Preston McCleary was the first. Alford's father Preston and wife Eliza Brassfield McCleary had five children according to my records. Preston's father, William and wife Karan had seven children. I believe Karan's name was Clark but need more evidence. William's father John only had one child that I can identify. Glain Martin

Thank you for the starting point. I do have a record of Ruby marring Norman Wallace in Pasquotank, Ky. I believe or North Carolina. Not sure without looking it up at this moment, it states her name as Ruby McCleary Walker, however, her daughters non-identifying information list her maiden name as Ruby Maxine McCleary. She was 24 in 1957. Basicly that is all of the information that I have. Her daughter is in desperate need of some kind of information.
Thank You so much for your help

Norman was in the Navy and stationed in Alameda, Ca. Their second child, Sheila Marleen Wallace was born in Alameda. However, the third child, Cherry Y Wallace was born 11/26/1961 in Fresno, Ca. Sometime between 3/10/1959 (DOB-Sheila) and the birth of Cherry the Wallace's moved to Fresno. Sheila and Stephan and Cherry were placed in foster care in 1962/63. Cherry was put up for adoption, probably with in the first year of foster care. Unfortunately, Stephan and Sheila remained in the foster care system until reaching 18 at which point they were kicked to the curb, so to speak. Both became adults with a lot of psycholgical and emotional problems.
On May 8, 2008, Stephan died (age 50) form cyrossis of the liver. To many years of drinking took its toll on him. Sheila too has a serious drinking problem as did their father (Norman) who also passed in 1974 from drinking.
We recently found Cherry's where abouts in Santa Cruz, Ca.
Sheila has not yet made contact with her. She has suffered a great deal since loosing Stephan. He was the only known relative to her.
There are so many question that need to be answered. The biggest being WHY. Why they ended up in the system and is their mother alive or dead.
Thanks for reading all of this and any information that you might be able to give us would be greatly appreciated,
Peggy Gibson
Fresno, Ca.

Her mental and emotional state are not good. Do records from from Social Services, foster care, etc. have to be kept or can they destroy them? She needs to find the answers to so many question.
Re: Margarett McCleary, Londonderry / Derry

Finding related families is usually the best thing to do if records of birth are missing. Then family trees or Bible records might reveal your Margaret's origins.

Records are difficult to read and are often mistranscribed. If you look at batch C700211, you will see McClury, McCleery, and McClary from Drumachose. McCleery is a common variation and the double 'e' is often mistaken for a 'u'. McClerdy and McCluly might be McClearys but McCLeare rarely is. This listing appears to be Drumachose church records and the best thing for early searches.

Another alternative spelling is McLeary and a google on it reveals
GEORGE MCLEARY Born NEWTON LIMAVADY, Londonderry
Served in Royal Artillery
Discharged aged 42 in records of 1808-1835

Most of the families appear to have moved away by 1864 and Griffith's Valuation shows one possible family. You might have luck finding them if they moved in a group.

Griffiths lists Margaret McClury living on Market House Street, Newtown Limavady and she is almost certainly a widow, possibly with children. You might try tracking down possible children and then looking for a tree in the hands of descendants. The 1901 and 1911 census and the wills at PRONI might help.

I can't tell from the names on the listing which religion is involved. However, there is a break in many church records including Drumachose from about 1775 to 1815 probably due to the revolution. You might search earlier church records to see if that would help. Also Tithe and Spinning wheel records are available and you might search them. PRONI did not seem to have the names in their Freeholders listing.

I'm sure people would be willing to help you if you listed more information.

Why don't you give us all a date of birth, location of birth and marriage, husband's name, names of uncles, aunts, parents, etc that might guide us to which McCleary family is involved. There are extensive trees already available for many McCLearys and you may find your mother already on one of them. Someone may even have a collection of family photographs that you would benefit from seeing.

I believe that I am a descendent also. I believe that Thomas McClary and Mary Archibald had a son named Archibald/Archia McClary Colby. Everything I have found leads to this, but not sure where the Colby comes in? Do you know? I have Archibald McClary Colby residing in Dunbarton, NH. Do you know anything about this. Please let me know. Thanks Terri
