Re: McClendon or McClellan

My Great Grandfather, James Samuel McClellan, b. 13 Nov 1834 Abbeville, SC - d. 3 Mar 1930 Cleveland Co., AR, was in the 3rd Arkansas. He was taken prisoner after the fall of Vicksburg and exchanged. The second time he was captured on 4 April 1864 on the Saline River south of Little Rock and sent to Rock Island prison camp. After the War, he is using the name of J. S. McClendon in the court records in Old Bradley County, Arkansas. His children used McClellan.

I will find my extracts are from the 1866 book with the McClendon's listed. They are in diffferent regiments. As far as I know, none of them are listed in any online documents, or at least none that I've found other than the Regiments listings from the NPS site. http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/

Andrew Dow McClellan's information is online at this URL:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/ky/military/rosters/union/11ky...

McClelland, Andrew, Private, B Co, 40 yrs, 10 Oct 61 at Camp George D. Prentice (Greenville),
KY. Jan-Apr 62 sick at Nashville, TN. Discharged 1 May 62 at Shiloh, TN due to disability.
Discharge certificate states disability due to curvature of the spine. At discharge was 5 ft 5
in dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, farmer and born in Smith Co, TN. (Also listed as
McClellan.)

McClelland, Calvin, Private, B Co, 18 yrs, 28 Sep 61 at Camp George D. Prentice (Greenville),
KY. May-Jun 62 sick at home. Jul-Oct 62 sick at General Hospital Evansville, IN. Nov-Dec 62
detached service with Pioneer Corps. Mar-Apr 63 detached service with Pioneer Corps.
Discharged 16 Dec 64 at Bowling Green, KY. (Also listed as McClellan.)

This is a great reference site for anyone researching the Kentucky Union and Confederate rosters.

Nancy McClellan Feroe
nmferoe@aol.com

Well do!! If you can please provide me with evidence of the McLendon/McClendons you first mentioned in the Union Army, I will be grateful. Did you know that you can attach documents to the emails in this forum? Maybe you can put them here???

There was evidence awhile back of one of the researchers who was searching the McLendon/McClendon name for his ancestor. He took a DNA test and found out that his McLendon/McClendon was really a McClellan. Look through the archives here to find his email about this.

Saundra Oliver Brown

No, I definitely said the Union Army. Andrew Dow McClellan was also one of our first commissioners for the Southern Claims Commission. Andrew served in a Kentucky Regiment with his son, Calvin McClellan (mother Sarah Ussary). I can go back and get the Regiments the others served in. They are also listed in the "Report of the adjutant general of Arkansas, for the period of the late rebellion, and to November 1, 1866." A researcher of the Calvin McClellan line also mentioned these men as ones who came to Arkansas when Calvin McClellan did. This second Calvin is not the son of Andrew Dow McClellan but is thought to be his nephew.

There is another McClellan line that lived at Cane Hill in Washington County, AR that was mainly Confederate. Col. John McClellan's son was Gen. William B. McClellan of Talladega, AL.

McClendon or McClellan

I want to share this research discovery that was made several years ago while researching a man who came to Benton County, AR in early 1860 and settled first in the Pea Ridge area. His name was Andrew Dow McClellan. By 1870, Andrew and his wife, Rebecca G. (Brandon) McClellan are living in the Springtown, AR area, His marriage to Rebecca Brandon was finally located in Lawrence Co., Alabama under the name of Andrew McCallow on 23 Jan 1834. Andrew Dow McClellan was also known by his family as A. D. McClendon. A number of family members used the surname of McClendon.

When the Civil War started, you will also find Dennis McClendon, Warren McClendon, Isaac McClendon, and Needham McClendon all enlisting in regiments in NW AR. They are using various spellings of the McClellan and McClendon name. A line of the Elllington family also moved to NW AR by 1860. During the War, Andrew's son, John G. McClellan, married Annie Ellington and William Ellington married Sarah McClellan.

Andrew Dow McClellan's second marriage was to Sarah Ussary. It was thought that they married in Northern Alabama under the name of McClendon but their record was finally located in Marshall Co., TN dated 24 Feb 1842.

These five men all joined Union regiments during the Civil War.

A friend and I are looking for a childhood friend, Karen Sue McClendon, born Nov. 27, 1948, in Missouri (probably Kansas City). Her first married name was Reynolds, then second, she married Richard Lusebrink. Divorced from him; now I have reason to believe her last name may be Ross.

Her parents were John Franklin McClendon and Joan R. Wilkinson. She has a younger sister, Debbie, and at least one older half sister, Sondra or Sandra, and a half brother, John.

We would dearly love to find Karen.

If anyone can help, please respond. If you know Karen, please tell her Diane and Linda love her and are trying to find her. Life takes crazy turns but old friends are dearest.

Thanks--Diane in KCMO

How interesting that you refer to Indians with this family. My inlaws always said that their Big Mama Poole was half cherokee but there is not proof anywhere. And it looked like any Indian blood goes back to Mahalie Snow who married Pettypool/p pool/Poole. Keep searching and let me know if you find anything that would help.

Linda

Today I'm going to look into the Rowland line, I will email you anything I find. I have no information after Obediah Snow, and the Simcox line, I have Thomas J, as Virginia's father, her mother as Lotta Smith m. Oct 3, 1846 in Morgan County, Alabama. No info on their parents. You can try to search Virginia's siblings and see if a tree has more info then we do. I haven't tried that on the Simcox side yet. I have that Thomas J. was born around 1823 in Grayson Virginia, maybe that will help find his parents. Talk to you soon.

Brooke

Hello! You are not mistaken. Rowland is her maiden name, her 1st husband was Thomas Rowan. We actually have 2 ties. Ruth and Thomas Rowan had a daughter named Nancy Elizabeth, who married Solomon J Snow, Obediah's son. After Thomas died, Ruth married Obediah, they had Joshuah. I am descended from Nancy and Solomon's son, James Winchell Snow. The other tie we have is, James Winchell Snow married Beulah B Simcox, sister of Virginia Alice Simcox, who was married to Joshuah Bowden.

My grandparents are somehow related to these people. In fact my grandmother's name was Sollie Malana Hickman Edmonson. Her mother was an Alley. There was a Solomon Alley. And there is an Obadiah and Solomon Snow listed in Saline County census records that we are supposed to be related to. I also heard that they were somehow related to the Snow Indians.
Sue DeMaine

Very cool. Do you have any information on the Rowland, Snow or Simcox lines? I am trying to make a connection from Virginia Simcox to Thomas Jackson Simcox to Aaron Simcock. I am fairly certain of the connection, but need to find something definitive. I don't really have any information past Ruth's father.

Thanks!

David

Hello! I know this is an old post, but I thought I would give it a go, just in case you still get the message. I am also a descendent of Obediah through Joshua Bowden, and would be greatly interested in anything you have on Obediahs wife Ruth. I have her as a Rowland, not a Rowan. Perhaps I am mistaken. I also have Obediahs father is Ishom Snow, not Larkin, but I could also be mistaken on that point.

Thanks!
David
wolfgangguntherson@yahoo.com
