Alot of work in there. Thank you for doing that. I'll check it out some more.

Joanne Burroughs

hi and thanks for replying. it is all so interesting the connection of the craigs townland - specifically portglenone - and greenock. when i went thru my files and compared the surnames to those listed in the craigs townland 1851 census there were well over a dozen of them. i've forwarded your information to a fred meek and a john meek both whom i know through searching that surname out and both with connections to greenock. i also found a lot of the same surnames had signed the ulster covenant. have you searched the death records for meeks who died in greenock? i will have to see what i have in my paper files and let you know but i wanted to respond right away as it might take me several days with my work schedule this week to fully check out what i might have that would be of interest. cheers. wayne

Hi,
Regret I can't help on McCloys, but your reference to Margaret Campbell married to George McCloy interests me. My wife's gt gt grandfather Robert Campbell b 1824 d 1894 married Rachel Meek at 2nd Portglenone Presbytarian ch 23 June 1837. They moved to Grennock. If you have any info on the Campbells in Antrim I would be grateful. I will look out for info on McCloys now

Samuel was not Catholic and I know he joined the Mason's in the USA in Louisiana as did his seven sons by his first wife. I found him in East Baton Rouge, LA with the first wife and then in Morgan City, LA (Brashear back then) with his second wife on the US Census but he died when my grandfather was very very young so he didn't make the next census and Frederick James McCloy Sr. was born 1898 according to one census and his mother's name (my ggrandmother) was listed as Mary. I know the seven sons by his first wife where all educated but the four children he had by his second wife could neither read nor write. Finding them was a nightmare because they were listed as McClay, McLoy, McCoy, etc. since the person who wrote their census, marriage license, baptismal records, etc. wrote their names as they though it sounded at the time. Daddy always said they had Native American Indian in his grandmothers side of the family so that could be the reason for no school. They were not allow to attend school in the USA for many many years. Also, when Samuel died, the family split and Mary's family moved to Plaquemine and Bayou Chene, LA and lived on a houseboat where my father was delivered by a midwife who was actually his grandmother. School wasn't as important in the swamps of Louisiana because they made their living fishing, hunting and pulling the spanish moss from the trees to dry so it could be used to stuff mattresses, couches, etc. and then the lumber company came in and cut the big oaks (Bayou Chene is Big Oak in French). There were sugar plantations out there as well and the civil war changed things too. Louisiana has been trying to recoup their history from individuals but a lot of them have died so that makes it hard for the rest of us who are looking to find where our relatives actually came from. I have a letter dated 1974 from one of the cousins in LA who told me Samuel came from County Derry, Ireland. I wish I would have gotten more but I really don't think they knew much more. Any help you can give will be appreciated. I have checked the Earl group and they actually think we could be related but I can't find any paper work to prove it. Thanks, Betty

Kim,

Yes, I am interested and would like to know if Andrew McCloy is a descendant. I have been stuck on the McCloy's here in USA but can't seem to get them back to County Derry, Ireland or up that way in the Northern part except for what they told me. Samuel Wilson McCloy my ggrandfather came from Ireland and finally settled down in East Baton Rouge (called Little Sandy) and then moved over to Morgan City (called Brashear back then) and we believe he died of the yellow fever when it took so many lives and is buried in one of the mass graves around Morgan City, Houma or Jennerette, LA. We have checked all the cemeteries and they all say the same thing down there...."they were dying so fast that they didn't have time to document the dead and just buried them in mass graves to try and stop the spread of the yellow fever." Please let me know what you have and maybe we can compare notes and see if indeed we might be of the same line. Thank you. Betty

DNA study for McCloy

I have started a DNA study for the McCloy clan and anyone wishing to participate may contact me or go to www.relativegenetics.com and they will tell you the prices and send out the kits. If you want to, you can send me your information and I can add it to the database, contact relatvie genetics and they will send you out a kit. For those of you that are new to the DNA studies, they are great. I belong to the O'Leary study that is being done as well. There is a draw back. You must be a male. They use the "Y" gene since it is passed from Father to son. If you are female, you can use your brother, father, cousin, uncle - any male in your family that carries the McCloy name. They must carry the McCloy name. If you are interested, please contact me at EMcCloyHodge@aol.com or relative genetics. The site has already been set up, it's just waiting for participants. Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season. If your family is like mine, they not only used McCloy but McLoy, McClay and several other variants of their given name. This might help clear up some of those mysteries we have been searching for years to obtain. All countries are welcome to join in this study.

Does Samuel have a middle name or any other information about himself? There are several Samuel McCloy's through out the USA in that period. My greatgrandfather was one and so was a cousin in LA. I don't know where the Sameul Wilson McCloy came from and haven't been able to track him except what the cousins told me that he settled in a place called Big Sandy outside of Baton Rouge, LA and that he was originally from County Derry in Northern Ireland. I understand a lot of the Irish in LA came from other states by way of the MS back in that time. You might try those records.

Hi Elizabeth, After thirty years looking I wish I had better news but my Samuel McCloy was married in Portglenone in County Antrim to a Mary Ann Glass. He moved to Greenock, Scotland with most of the rest of the family. I checked the Wilson surname in my tree and doesn't appear to run on the McCloy side though I do have one tied to a Margaret Shirley and one to my McGauchie side. Do you have an approx. birth date? Was he listed in the Griffiths directory? I know a lot of research has been done on the McCloy name through the Earl's Chronicles web site but I can't tie any of it in to mine. Was he Presbyterian? All mine were/are but I have run into some McCloys that were Catholic. Does he show up on any immigration information? I can keep an eye out for him and will go thru my paper file (about five or six inches of it) and see if anything shows up. Wayne Atherholt, DeBary, Florida
Searching for anyone with information specific to the McCloys who lived in Ahoghill area of Antrim. Some of the children got married at Portglenone Presbyterian Churches. Some moved to Greenock, Scotland and I have lots of information from that point - my mother is from Greenock and she's a McCloy but am running into many loose ends in Antrim. George McCloy married Margaret Campbell.

They had the following children I have records for in Greenock: Hugh, Samuel, James, John. Daughters Mary and Nancy I don't have more information on. There are other McCloys in that area that I assume are brothers but can't prove it. 1851 census shows Robert and his family, James and his family, and John and William showing at home with George St. and wife Jane. I believe George's father is George (he shows up in Griffith's Valuations for Craigs).
I am trying to find out some info, on a picture I found in my grandmother's photo album...She was married to William McLachlin McIlravey, both of them born in Port Glasgow, Sct.
On the back of the picture it states that Katie McCloy with Lizzys daughters Margaret and Betty..
Does these name come into your family anywhere..I do now that a McIlravey girl married a McCloy..
The girl (McIlravey) was the sister to my grandfather William..

Re: McCloy, George & other McCloys - Ahoghill Craigs Antrim

My ggrandfather's name was Samuel Wilson McCloy and I know he came from Ireland and ended up in Louisiana USA. Louisiana did not keep good records so I have trouble tracing him from East Baton Rouge and then to what was known as Brashear (Morgan City now) Louisiana but he had seven sons by one wife and four children by a second wife. I believe he came down from the northern states by way of the Mississippi river looking for work and married and stayed there until his death. From the last son that died last year, at 99 years old, he told me Samuel died of the Yellow Fever and is buried around Morgan City, LA USA but they had mass graves back then because there were so many and did not mark a lot of the graves. I know he came from the County Derry area or Antrim and he named one of his sons after himself. I was raised in TX later by my mother so finding out about the McCloy's has been a really hard task in the State of Louisiana. Records are basically non-existent with the hurricanes and floods, the records they had in the churches where ruined. Please tell me what you have on your Samuel? I have been searching for over 30 years and they didn't leave much of a paper trail for me to follow in the states. Thank you in advance for your help.

Best Regards,
Elizabeth J. McCloy
Horseshoe Bay, TX USA

Raquel,

You might try using People Search or just Google Keith's name but their are certain questions you need to know. His age (now), and things like that will help. I Googled his name and came up with 53 men named Keith McCloy and some with middle names and some without. Good luck.

Betty

DNA "Y" males only McCloy Study

I am still waiting for male McCloy/McClay/McClow and any other variation of McCloy to sign up for the McCloy DNA study. It has to be a male so all you females (as in my case) can use your brother (as long as his last name is McCloy, etc), your uncle, dad, cousin, etc as long as they are males with the last name McCloy etc. Please go to www.relativegenetics.com to sign up for the McCloy DNA study. So far I have my brother and one other male McCloy but we need a lot more than that. All you ones in CO, PA, TX, WV, VA, OH and wherever you might be, think about it. You might be related and not even know about it and what better way to find out. Join the McCloy DNA study and relative genetics will keep all your information confidential and private. They will let us know if their is a match to anyone else in the study. If you have any questions, please email me at EMcCloyHodge@aol.com. Thanks and good luck to all in their research. Betty

Re: McCloy's

I finally found Frederick McCloy on the 1900 census in Morgan City, LA with his brother, Grover Cleveland McCloy, sisters; Ada McCloy and Emma Maude McCloy. His mother is listed as Mary and they are all boarders on this census. Frederick was my grandfather. Since none of them could read or write, their name was misspelled on most of the documents throughout history. Frederick was found under McClay, McCloy, McLoy as were other McCloy's. He was listed as Fred, Frederick, Frederick Samuel, Samuel Frederick, Fred Sr., et al. If you are doing McCloy research, make sure you search the soundex because you could be missing valuable information because their names were not spelled correctly. My father Fred Jr. went by Frederick James, Fred Jr., Fred, Fred J, et. al and did not have a birth certificate in the state of Louisiana. He did have an old worn baptismal certificate with the name stated as Fred McCloy but the date of birth had been changed by him to get into the army in WWII. He was actually younger than his baptismal record and when he went to get his SS, it caused him a lot of problems. Samuel Wilson McCloy, Fred Sr.'s father, was listed as Sam McClay, Saml McCloy, S.W. McCloy, et al on the census records over time from IA to LA. I don't know if it's transcription errors on the part of the census enumberators or database operators but he can be found if you just check all the names in the soundex. I hope this helps someone looking for the McCloy's. They are out there, we just have to keep looking. When I wrote the information in the message in 2000, there wasn't all the information listed on the ancestry.com or genealogy.com or other helpful websites as there is now. Thanks to them and the help of others posting their information on these sites, I have found a lot of information and relatives I had been searching over 30 years for in Louisiana and Ireland. Good luck in your research and if I can be of any assistance, please let me know. Betty
