Hi,
I looked at the census that you noted with David (cen 1900) being shown as born at sea. I noticed that Mary died in 1902 so had no futher reports. Also all her previous census list "SC". Since this is the only census I could find noting born "at sea" I am wondering if this wasnt a census recording error. You will note that the "at sea" recording could have possibly have be the pronunciation of the abreviation of south carolina "SC". Thanks for the heads up on this. I am currently working on David in SC. I have started a McCombs YDNA project on ancestry.com and am trying to collect dna samples of those McComb(s) families located there. Since those McCombs researchers that I know have no info on David beyond himself, my attempt is to try matching some lines still located in that area.
Bill McCombs (wmmccombs1@gmail.com)

I think I know the answer to your question. I am reasonably certain that my great grandfather Charles C Barrett was married to her. They married in 1879. Her name that she went by was a middle name-- Jennifer. But I know that she was from Ontario Canada and her father's name was Hiram. In one census she is listed as just "E Barrett". She died in Waco Texas in 1910. If you would like I can tell you a great deal more

Re: Dewey McCombs

Hello T - I don't have much, but here is what I do have:
Dewey McCombs was born in about 1876 (1899). His parents were Mary A. Evans and William McCombs. In 1900 he was living in Carlisle in Kay County Oklahoma.
This information supplied by Marina Wells.

And I have this on his parents:

Mary Ann Evans was born on September 6, 1856 in Butler County, Kentucky. Her parents were Berilla White and John C. Evans. In 1877 in Kentucky, Mary Ann married William Thomas McCombs. William was born on January 24, 1859 in Spring Lick in Grayson County, Kentucky. In 1900 William and Mary lived in Carlisle in Kay County Oklahoma. In 1910 they had moved to Otter Township in Garfield County, Oklahoma, and in 1920 they lived in Douglas in Garfield County. Thomas was the eldest child of the family and he farmed all his life, providing enough income to feed and clothe his family. Mary Ann Evans was a grounded person who was the first one to be at your side if you were sick or injured. She grew her own herbs using them for her family and friends when needed, typical to the Native way of life. She sat by the bed of one family member for two days until the crisis was over, all without sleep. She was a very happy person, always wearing a smile with a song in her voice. A church-goer, Annie was well respected in the church, and it is told she may not have had the "pertyst voice", but she was always on key in the choir. Tom and Annie had a few losses in their married life, and their newborn son was an extreme first loss to Annie. She tried everything to save him, and couldn't, so Tom took his little body to the corner of their land and buried him there. A family diary describes how she stood at the kitchen window and cried at the loss of the son she couldn't keep. This process started the first cemetery in the area, though it was on private land. Mary Ann and William had 7 children:
Winford McCombs was born in January 1878 (December 18, 1877)
Wilford McCombs was born in November 1880
Elizabeth McCombs was born in 1883
Alfred McCombs was born on May 22, 1884
Nathaniel McCombs was born on October 15, 1886 and died on March 14, 1941
Harrison McCombs was born in 1889 (July 30, 1888)
Dewey McCombs was born in January 1899
Mary Ann died in about 1900 (between 1900 and 1910.) William died on March 14, 1941 at his son Winfred’s home in Kiowa in Sumner County, Kansas.
From Information supplied by Marina Wells.
Information provided by zhunt in an E-mail on February 14, 2008.
