McConkeys in NC?????

Attempting to find information on one ELIZABETH McCONKEY who was married to John Burgess at his death in 1775 in Orange Co., NC. They evidently had no children and left their estate to three individuals whose relationship to the couple or each is other is unknown: Lyda Breeze, Susannah Stone, and Benjamin Williams. There was a Samuel McConkey who served as appraiser of the JB estate in 1775, and was in the newly formed Caswell Co., NC (formed from Orange) in 1777 and again in 1782.

There was a land grant given very early (like, 1750) in Granville Co., NC to a Mary McConkey, but any relationship to Elizabeth is unknown.

There was also a Samuel McConkey in Augusta Co., VA in the 1760's, but it does not seem likely that this would be the SM who appears in Orange Co., NC due to the continued appearance of a SM Jr. in Augusta into the 1780's.

Any help appreciated.

Sorry about the delay but, because of health problems, I have been staying with family members and have just retreaved my McConkey material from home. In response to your question: It is very possible. William Alexander had five children with Nancy Jane Moses. I have the fourth child listed as Jessie but I have no other information on him other than that he was born in March of 1886. Is this your Jessie? If it is then I can give you a good bit of information on our family. If it isn't I still may be able to help you.

I have some information on your Ebenezer McConkey & his father Ebenezer as well. It appears that our McConkey line can be traced back to County Monaghan in northern Ireland to 1741, with the birth of a John McConkey in Tullyland, County Monaghan, Ireland. According to a far more accomplished relative of ours, our McConkey ancestors came from Scotland to northern Ireland in possibly the early 1600's.

your gg grandfather Ebenezer's father, Charles McConkey, moved from northern Ireland possibly in 1830's to Ontario, where Ebenezer was born 21 Mar 1838 in Wellesley, Waterloo, Ontario. Charles was born in 1811 in Tullyland, Monaghan, Ireland & passed on in 1843 in Ontario.

feel free to email me for more specifics scottmcconkey@hotmail.com

Thanks for the information. John and Henry are two of Margaret and George Harris's Children. My G Grandmother was their daughter Francis Harris, So I know we have the correct McConkey's. If you have any other info on this line, I would love to see it. Margaret died on Oct 14 1947. W.W. Standridge is the one who gave the information on the death Certificate. He may have mixed up the two Mary Polly's.

Thanks,
Sharon

Hi cousin (it looks like about sixth). I have Margaret as the second child of John Jessie McConkey, Jr. (my g-g-grandfather Alex was the third child) but I don't see how the listing of their mother as Mary (Polly) Woodfin can possibly be correct. From a marriage record we know that John's brother Lewis married Mary (Polly) Woodfin on August 15, 1860. John's wife was also named Mary (Polly) but from a Civil War pension application that she filed we know with certainty that her maiden name was Perkey. I did not have Margaret's death but I do have her being born on November 5, 1855, which matches her age of 92 at her death. I have the least on the family of Lewis McConkey but his marriage date would seem to eliminate Margaret being his daughter. I also have a copy of the family history pages out of a family Bible which lists Margaret as a child of John's and also lists two Harris births (Henry born October 10, 1875 and John born December 26, 1877). Unless whoever gave Margaret's death information was confused I have no idea what to tell you.

Roy

I don't have a clue as to who W.W. Standridge is and how he might have been related to Margaret. The only explaination that I have also is the one that you listed. I am sending you three scans to the e-mail address that is listed for you. It not being my direct line, I don't have any information on Margaret's descendants but I feel that you will be happy with what you receive. It takes forever to scan and attach these files and I didn't want to take the chance of overloading your account so I will wait until tomorrow to send the pension application and bible records. John Jessie, Sr. was the son of Samuel McConkey, Jr.

Roy

Roy,

Hi! Thanks for your email on the McConkeys in Monroe! I would LOVE to compare notes, since I have very little information on the McConkey line of my family. Again, my grandpa was Robert McConkey - great grand parents: John A. and Lulah McDonald McConkey; gggrandparents: Samuel McConkey son of John Jesse McCOnkey and Rachel Wellbourn.
If you have any info at all about John Jesse McConkey's family line -- like where he came from, the names of his kids, etc -- i would be thrilled! Did John Jesse come to TN from Abingdon Va? Emai me at animalheavn@aol.com

Lauren,

My McConkey line comes out of Monroe County, Tennessee but we are descended from John Jesse McConkey, Jr., not his brother Samuel. I have a good bit of information on the McConkey line, and the children of John Jesse McConkey, Sr. in particular, that I will be more than happy to share with anyone that needs it. If you want to compare notes e-mail me.

Roy

I entered my message on genealogy.com as that was where I worked from. Have read all 117 messages here and have seen most of them traveling over the internet. McConkey's came to America in 1727. Later other McConkey's came again and again.
I have all the information on Samuel McConkey who lived at McConkey's Ferry for a few years and have the material concerning our connection to that family. As I serch for Charity's name, I find there isn't much about her other than Buck's County,Pa.
You have left off her two oldest sons, Hugh,
and Alexander. Hugh moved into Md. His James
ran a tavern in Peach Bottom. The William's
are so many, lets identify them by son of???
William son of Samuel md Hannah Mathers, when she died he md again. He lived in NJ most of his life after leaving PA. Our line:
Robert McConkey has been researched for sometime, as he isn't the Robert McConkey that md a Hazlett woman. Our Robert was bn in America. I believe that his father is our Irishman McConkey, but am begining to believe that could be wrong also. Researching turns up many surprizes. Thank You.

Hello everyone. I am researching some McConkey's also. My husband is the Great-Grandson of Clarence McConkey, whose father was Jesse Jackson McConkey and married Flora I Collake. I know they lived in Monroe county in 1910 from the census. Are these the same McConkey's? I have no information further back then Jesse Jackson McConkey. My husband was born in Athens, TN and that's where Clarence lived from the time I entered the picture until his death, well Riceville actually. Thanks for any help!

I am seeking information about the descent of my great grandfather, Ebenezer McConkey, who I have traced back to a Canadian Census entry of 1881 which records him as being 14 years old at that time and resident in North Perth, Ontario. His father is described in that census entry as being also named Ebenezer McConkey and having been born in 1837 in Ontario. Can anyone provide information about where these McConkeys came from? I know that they were Ulster Irish, but don't know when the emigrated and where in Ulster they orginated.
Thank you.

so sorry it took me so long to repy to you. I am not sure if he went to an orphanage. His father was killed in action in france in ww2. His mother was lost at sea coming over ( we think on her way to canada or it could have been on her way to europe. We understand that his parents were scottish and italian heritage. We don't know which parent was scottish and which parent was italian. He was born in 1942 and we believe, named michael mcconkey.

I am looking for lost relatives in the mcconkey family. Either the mom or dad of my father with the last name of mcconkey. he was left an orphan at the age of 2 in 1944. His mom died at sea and his dad was killed in action.
