Thanks, Eve! I will try to put this together with what I have. Once in a while, I have been able to get to the NJ State Archives and work on McConnell family members. Maybe I can fill in some blanks using some of these dates when I get up there again. Then I will look for you on this board.

Kirsten

Eve,
That is interesting. I think I know which Morris you mean, and I don't think that I share a connection with him, at least not on this side of the Atlantic. I remember seeing the name Capner. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity.

It is possible that I am related to your Martha, and I have wondered what happened with Martha and James, so if you could help me with them, I would appreciate it. I don't think I have marriage or death information for them, and I don't have much on their kids, either. I'm not even sure that I have completed census work on them.

Kirsten

Kirsten,
I had been trying to make a connection between Martha McConnel and Morris (Maurice) McConnell b. 1789 Londonderry. I can't remember what started me in this direction. I did not pursue Morris' ancestry - probably because there is little readily available. He was married to an Elizabeth Capner, for whom there is quite a bit of info available (father Joseph Capner, descended from Capnerhursts).
Eve

Eve, I'm glad to be of help. That second marriage that I was remembering was probably not a second marriage by Joseph.

Another thing that I have been trying to remember was whether John's father James was probably a son of William as I stated or whether he might have been a grandson or other relative. I have some information about this in my files, but you might also find the same information online or be able to find it through another researcher.

If your wrong tree involved McConnells, I might be interested in it.

Be sure to try to get in touch with Martha, who is a descendant of John and Elizabeth. You have probably already found at least one of her posts by now.

Kirsten

John McConnell born about 1795 died before March 20, 1860. His wife was Elizabeth Pierson born about 1795/6 and died September 12, 1884. She was buried at the Oxford Meeting House. Her parents were Robert Pierson and Luisa. There is a book that gives information on partitions of lands in Warren County that names Robert Pierson's children; Samuel; Ruth; Sarah; John; Elizabeth, wife of McConnell; Wilson; Joseph; and Charles.

Children of John McConnell and Elizabeth Pierson were:
Joseph (abt 26 Apr 1817 - 10 Feb 1899) m Mary Slack 31 Dec 1842 in Warren County, NJ. I think I have a record of a second marriage for Joseph during the early 1850s.
William (abt 1819 - after 3 March 1860) m Hannah Demarest 21 Feb 1846 in Sussex County, NJ.
Martha (abt 1823 - after 1 June 1880) m James Brown.
Ruth (abt 19 Apr 1826 - 23 Dec 1893) m Henry Hopler 13 Feb 1851 in Warren County, NJ.
Robert b abt 1832 resided in Newark, Essex County, NJ in 1860. You can find out more about him by looking around on Rootsweb. I think the Warren County board has some good posts for you.
Elizabeth born about 1838 known from the 1850 census.

John's parents were James McConnell and Elizabeth Howey. Barbara Howey Parks helped me with information on the Howey family and a William McConnell who was almost certainly the father of James McConnell. It's nice to know that there is another researcher working on this family.

Re: Invitation to McConnel Family Website

Joe, my McConnell family lived in Jefferson Township, Morris County and Byram Township, Sussex County. I have Y chromosome DNA test results for 2 McConnell cousins. There results match on 36 of 37 markers, which confirms my paper trails back to their most recent common ancestor, Dennis McConnell, who was probably born c 1802. However, they do not match any of the other McConnell or MacConnell lines in the large Clan Donald DNA project for men with some sort of Clan Donald connection.

I do not know of any other McConnell or MacConnell males from your family that have tested, so I do not know whether my McConnell line is the same as yours. I think that the situation for my own line may be rather complicated. My cousins have a low level match with a Lefeber from Germany who has only had 12 markers tested. There was a LeFevre family that lived in the same area as my McConnell family, and I know that at least one Revolutionary War pension file mentions a Lake Hopatcong location for a McConnell who applied for a pension. I have not found a LeFevre from the NJ family to test to confirm that there is a relationship.

I think that my male cousins who carry the McConnell surname probably carry a LeFevre Y chromosome, but knowing that the LeFevre and McConnell families lived so close to each other, I wonder if there is a female from the McConnell family in my ancestry. I would love to find out how DNA test results from males carrying McConnell/MacConnell Y chromosomes from Sussex County compare with those of my cousins and with those of other men in the Clan Donald DNA project. If you are aware of any men from your line or other lines from Sussex County and vicinity that have been tested or might be interested in testing, I would love to hear from you.

As it happens, I will be away from home for most of this coming week, so if you reply to me and don't hear from me for a few days, I will catch up with you when I get back. What timing!

Kirsten Saxe

One of the challenges with the DNA research process is that the tests are blind in nature with voluntary disclosure of family trees and contacts. Most of the tests do not family trees attached and the email addresses tend to become usless and antiquated with time. FTDNA company has a testing system that relates markers on different tests and rates the closeness of generational contacts accordingly. This makes casual connections somewaht difficut,

What I have been trying to do is to identify PA McConnell family lines in reasonable close temporal and geographical propinquity, identify members who have been tested, and see if relatonships can be revealed. Where family lines have not been tested then I have been promoting that those lines be tested.

The challange is getting those participants in the test to identify themselves so family histories, such as yours, can be related and examined for connections and missing relationships. Would you ask the family member who was tested if they would participate in our research project?

I would need their name, test number, email address and where they fit in your family tree to get some idea of the genetic marker drift from your earlies ancestor and potential other unknown ancestors.

I think family connections the most likely motivation for migration & settlement patterns; however, if it was the wife's family we may never know, unless there are yet-to-be-discovered church records that names the wife's family.

To my knowledge the only one of our branch to be DNA tested is a descendant of Francis K. (1852-1938). It definitely looks like we're to a point where only DNA will provide answers.

Sharon,

I am always interested in McConnell family histories that include passage thru Washington County Pa in their migraton west. Paritcularly those in the early 1790's and before. My own ancester, Denis McConnel, lived in Washington County Pa in the early 1790's before moving north to what is now Lawrence County Pa.

A group of McConnell researchers are trying to sort out the early McConnell family lines in Pa from that era. A number of us have hit our family brick walls in terms of finding new records about family lines and have turned to DNA research to tie family lines together. If your William McConnell first came to Pa on his way to Ohio, it may have been because he had kin in Pa who had already blazed the trail to the Western frontier which at that time was Washington County Pa.

Do you know if anyone in your family line has participated in the Clan Donald DNA research project? I would love to tie your line to one of the Washington County Pa McConnell lines. If someone has not participated, wouldn't you be curious to know if your William McConnell had kin already in America as the motivation for him to come to Pa vs the Carolinas or Georgia where there were already a lot of McConnells. It would be a great addition to the wonderful family tale that you have assembled so far.

Andrew McConnel(l) & Family--Indian Territory

Looking for any information on Andrew McConnel(l) and his background. Andrew married Sally Harlin (Harlan) and together they had children by the name of Bertha and Pearl (may have been others, I just don't know). They lived quite awhile in Tahlequah District, Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma). Apparantly Andrew also had a family in Kansas I believe after he and Sally's marriage ended.
They may have been Cherokee slaves. Any information is welcomed and will be appreciated.

I was planning to send for the third's Dawe's jacket to see if I could make a connection--now I have two more to send for--smile.
I did some checking and found out that I can view the book and film about 15 minutes from my house.
Thanks again for your time!

Re: McConnel family of Lebanon Co.,PA -Cameron/Riegel

6/19/1913 letter from Samuel Riegel Lebanon Co.,PA
Mary Williams Cameron died 1911/wife of Henry Nelson Cameron

Mrs. Sarah (Cameron) Young Niles,Michigan Lebanon PA June 10 1913

My dear Cousin

It was a great pleasure to me several days ago to receive your welcome letter. The letter you refer to that I wrote to your father was not answered. Cousin Olivia kept me well informed at the time and I knew of the great loss you sustained by the death of your mother. And realizing the issues the had to be met during the accident, sickness and death of a beloved parent, and the new cares that had to be met of an aged father. You all had my sincere sympathy on account of my past experience. It was truly gratifying to me to read in your letter of the distribution your father made of his property and of the nice feeling pervading among the children.

Since March 11, I have Uncle Joseph McConnell at home. He was twelve weeks in the hospital. His first thought, when leaving the hospital, was to take rooms at the nearest hotel to the Homestead, but on inquiry, I found all the rooms taken and they could only take him as a border. That was not satisfactory. I secured a private boarding place across the street from the “Homestead,” and I suggested starting the fires and making the house comfortable, and to stay with Uncle at night as long as necessary. I have been doing this to the present and uncle is well cared for. He has a slight indisposition for a few days, but is doing nicely at present. His great trouble is weakness. We were fortunate in securing a good boarding place. Uncle enjoys his meals and rests well, sleeps well at night.

I am heartily glad you referred to the matter of genealogy to me, because there are not as many who are informed, besides while Uncle Joseph is still living, I can consult with him. I am sorry not to have something real nice for you daughter to help her being eligible to the societies referred to (DAR). Our ancestors were of the peaceful but nevertheless bestcitizens. Uncle Tommy Cameron was an honorably discharged soldier of the Civil War, and on special occasions wore badges and credentials enough for the whole “Friend-Schaft.”

I will now answer your Grandmother Cameron’s maiden name. Uncle Joseph Cameron’s wifes maiden name Bories/Burris?. Polly Bories(Burris?). Uncle Tommy Cameron spoke of a brother of your Grandmother, Joseph Bories(Burris?). My Grandmother McConnel’s father’s name was Lewis "Ludwig" Cameron. His wifes’ family name was Wolf. There are immediate relatives living at the Wolf homestead and own the place. I visit there. Grandmother McConnel, Polly May, the eldest, Catherine (Aunty Vogel) were the two daughters of the first marriage. John, the eldest son and Joseph, Your Grandfather were the children of the first marriage. Uncle John Cameron mentioned, may have drifted into the war of the Revolution. It was he of whom I wrote to your father that one day while your grandfather, Joseph Cameron, was out along the Juaniata he was addressed by a voice from the opposite of the river, and looking in the direction of the voice saw a man. Uncle Joseph Cameron was addressed “Brother Joe, is that you?” Answered “Yes is that you brother John?” Uncle Joseph Cameron hurriedly made his way to his boat, and crossed the river to meet his brother. And in his own language met on one. If the earth had opened and swallowed him, he would not more effectually been out of sight. You of course know when Uncle Joseph Cameron went west as a pioneer in his own equipment, all of the family but your father who had preceded the rest, were overtaken by sickness(Cholera) and had three funerals in five days. Uncle Joe’s wife, daughter Catherine (Mrs. Rush) and her husband. The latter, Cousin Mae Williams Grandparents. While my Grandparents were still living in the country, your Grandmother Cameron with your father, Cousin Henry Nelson Cameron, visited by grandparents at their home. My mother (86 years), your father, and Uncle Tommy Cameron were near the same age. Family name of the second wife Gossert, Aunt Betsy (who died with us) the eldest Sarah, married to a man named Long. Lydia married to Meffert. Third wife Maria Walter. Simon Cameron the eldest of this marriage. Noah, Louisa (married to Foesig), and Tommy Cameron. My birth date was Sept. 4, 1845. May following Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron visited my Grandparents at Lebanon and I have the honor of being carried out of the house first time bare headed by him. Grandmother McConnel always spoke of your father by using his full name Henry Nelson Cameron. My Grandparents were in touch with Uncle Joseph Cameron (Your Grandfather) and were informed of their preparations to go west and received letters when they were overtaken by sickness and death. Before starting for the west, Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron with his family and Uncle Joseph Cameron (your grandfather) lived near together, near East Salem. Uncle Noah Cameron was already married. So was Uncle Simon Cameron. Uncle Tommy Cameron was living home most of the time with his parents. Grandfather Ludwig Cameron was a shoemaker by trade and a useful man in the Community. He had given much attention to tree culture and raising fruit.Skilled in Grafting. when Uncle Adam McConnel and Uncle Joseph McConnel (brothers) were on a visit at Thompsontown, they were shown by Father Evans a worthy resident of Thompsontown, grafted in Mr. Evans orchard and posts and fencing set by Great Grandfather Ludwig Cameron. Mr. Evans spoke in highest praise of Great Grandfather Cameron as a friend and neighbor and a useful citizen. When Uncle Noah Cameron died, the two uncles (McConnel) were at the funeral. It was said of Uncle Noah Cameron that he was worth more in the community than some others that might be named by the dozen. All of Uncle Noah Cameron’s family are well to do, and are in possession of the homestead. Two of the sons within the last year have gone to Florida and bought land with the purpose of making their home there. One of Uncle Tommy Cameron’s daughters (Mrs. Sarah Walker) lives at Post Falls, Idaho. They have a farm of 160 acres, and have set an orchard of over 700 choice fruit trees. I had a letter from Cousin Sarah last fall stating they had 800 choice apples in boxes ready to be shipped. Cousin Emma Poffenbeger, a sister of Mrs. Walker and her husband are looking forward to making a trip to Post Falls,Idaho. And when they accomplish it, expect to stop at Niles, Mich. Great grandfather Cameron was a deeply religious man. The last time he visited Lebanon, when I was an infant, Uncle Joseph McConnel know of this visit, and when he left Lebanon, Uncle Jacob McConnel, Uncle Adam McConnel and Uncle Joe took G. Grandfather Cameron to Highspire with Grandfather McConnel’s horse and carriage to visit Uncle and Aunty Vogel.

When Great Grandfather Cameron visited Lebanon last time, Great Grandmother McConnel was still living. She was a very intelligent woman, and at that time considered an educated lady. It is said that she and father Cameron spent much time in social intercourse talking over the future and religious matters,, and their parting was never forgotten. My Grandmother McConnel persuaded her father while on this visit to attend catechetical lecture in our church, conducted by our Pastor, Rev. Henry Wagner, he was deeply impressed and remarked of Pastor Wagner when he came home “Er is ein guten Lehrer” I can not tell you what a comfort it is to me to receive your letter. Trusting it will be of help to you and your daughter, if there is anything I have not mentioned call my attention to it and any information I can give, you shall have cheerfully. My youngest daughter, Rhoda, is very much interested in knowing of the past and means to profit by it, while Uncle Joseph McConnel and I are still here to give her information. She is a teacher at Cornwall, and enjoying her vacation and a much needed rest. It would be a great comfort to me to have your daughter write to Rhoda with the hope that they will become correspondents.

Please remember us kindly to the relatives at Niles,MI and South Bend,IN. I expect to hear from some of you coming East this summer. Great Grandfather Cameron is buried at East Salem near where they lived before your Grandfather Joseph Cameron went west. His first wife is buried at Kimmerlings Church little more than three miles from Lebanon. Father Cameron’s parents came into the U.S. by way of Canada. In their travels, his mother carried him Indian fashion on her back. Later his father returned to Canada. The mother with her little boy drifted into Lancaster Co. Pa where they lived on a farm with a kind family, when the poor little boy, our Great Grandfather, was forsaken by his mother, who also returned to Canada. The family with whom they were living kept the little boy, and in time he made his way into Lebanon Co.

He learned the shoemaker trade at Stumpstown, now Fredericksburg, by Jacob Buchananyer. He prospered at his trade and married into a respected family near Kimmerlings Church by the name of Wolf. His first wife died when the children were young, so small that their father lifted them to see their mother in the coffin. Some of our immeditate relatives still live at Kimmerlings's Church and are highly respected and prosperous people.
Hoping to hear from you soon, trusting this message will find you enjoying good health. All of us join in love to you all.

Your Cousin,
Samuel Riegel
928 Walnut St.
Lebanon,PA
After writing this letter,my youngest daughter expressed so much interest in it,that I gave it to her to make extracts from it.She wishes me to give her all the information and help her formulate it into a family tree.In a local history some years ago there is a brief sketch of Samuel Riegel, tracing briefly genealogy on the paternal and maternal side of the Palatinate in "The Fatherland".When daughter Rhoda has a little more leisure I will ask her to make you a copy and send it to you.I was looking for a card sent to me by cousin Sarah Walker of Post Falls,Idaho giving the picture of a squaw, carrying a babe on her back. She was employed by the Government of Washington as a guide to surveyors in surveying a Gov't Route across the mountains. And they have erected a bronze statue in her memory,in Idaho. In bringing Uncle home from the hospital, this card has been misplaced.
After all this delay, for which I ask your pardon,I will mail this letter, with the hope of hearing from ou soon.I am in error when I say Uncle Jacob,Adam and Joseph McConnel took Gr. Grandfather Cameron to Highspire. That was another occasion.Grandfather and Grandmother McConnel and Uncle Joseph McConnel have the honor on this last visit.

Would be pleased to have your daughter write of the information she has been able to gather.

True copy of letter written by Samuel Riegel to
Sarah Cameron Young on 6/19/1913
letter notarized on 6/21/1954
by Maude Young Umholtz R.R 4 box 74,Niles,Michigan

McConnel males welcome to join Clan Donald DNA project.

Because the McConnel surname is a variant of the name MacDonald, McConnel males are invited to join the Clan Donald DNA project. This project is one of the largest DNA family projects in existence, with 475 participants. Because of the complex family structure of the clan and the use of variant surnames, current members bear 71 different surnames!
So far, no McConnel participants are listed in the project results tables, but 2 MacConnells and 14 McConnells are listed. Results for the two MacConnell males tie them to the male line of Scotland's Dalriadic royal house and results for one of the McConnell men place him in the same group with the two MacConnell males as his closest matches within the study. Results for the remaining 13 McConnells place them in 4 different groups. Results tables for the project and other pages on the Clan Donald website provide very interesting information on the different groups.
For a brief overview of this project, try visiting the project web page on the Family Tree DNA website at https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=F86325&...;... For more detailed information, go to the DNA project pages on Clan Donald's own website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/
The webmaster for the project is Professor Douglas McDonald of the University of Illinois, and he has done a wonderful job of pulling together information on the DNA technology used by projects like this one.
As a McConnell researcher, I am interested in seeing this well-established project continue to grow. If anyone has questions about the project or about genetic genealogy, I am happy to try to answer those questions myself, or to find others who can. I plan to start making posts to the McConnell board and mailing list to help educate other researchers new to the subject of genetic genealogy about this project, so interested researchers may find it convenient to follow the McConnell board and the mailing list by subscribing to the McConnell list. (The board is gatewayed to the mailing list.)

I wonder if this McConnel family is in any way related to a McConnel family that lived in Boise around 1890, but resided in Wayne County, Iowa in 1860, 1870, and 1880. The male head of this household was named William McConnel, and his wife was Nancy. Online sources say that Nancy was a Graham. William, Nancy, and some of their children were enumerated in Lick Creek, Van Buren County, Iowa in 1850. Their son Francis K McConnel resided in Allen County, Kansas in 1900 and Pueblo, Colorado in 1920.

A great grandson of Francis has joined the Clan Donald DNA project with 67 marker results from Family Tree DNA. It would be interesting to see results for another man from this McConnel family, which online sources trace to a William McConnel born in Ireland about 1760.

In some records, the family name is spelled McConnell.

Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher

David K. McConnel of Canyon Co., Idaho

DAVID K. McCONNEL

As the tide of emigration steadily flowed westward David K. McConnel for many years identified with the pioneer development of the great region west of the Mississippi. He came to Idaho in 1862 from Iowa and had for a number of years before been connected with that state when it was a frontier region, living in Van Buren and Wayne counties of Iowa from 1849, in which year he journeyed westward in a covered wagon from Ohio (with his parents at the age of eleven). He was born in Guernsey county of the latter state on the 12th of August, 1838, and has therefore passed the eighty-first milestone on life's journey. He was one of a family of eleven sons and one daughter, being the second in order of birth. The parents were William and Nancy (Graham) McConnel, who were also natives of Ohio and in 1849 moved with their family to Iowa.

David K. McConnel was reared upon the home farm and the little temple of learning in which he pursued his education was a log schoolhouse in his native county. He also attended a country school of Iowa. While his father was a farmer, he was also a natural mechanic and handy with tools, and in his youth the son learned the carpenter's trade under the father's direction.

He (David), too, however turned his attention to farming; and cattle raising and to these occupations has devoted practically all his life, especially since coming to Idaho. A defect in one ankle rendered it impossible for him to serve during the Civil war and in 1862 he came to the northwest with a wagon train of seventy-two wagons, his own wagon being drawn by oxen. The entire train crossed what is now the state of Idaho and went on to Oregon, disbanding near the present site of Baker City. While enroute they passed down the Boise valley on the south side of the Boise river, but the capital city had not yet been founded and even the fort was not built until 1863. There were no town, no houses, no irrigation ditches, no vegetation but sagebrush, nothing to indicate that here would be founded and developed a beautiful metropolitan center, with its trade interests reaching out to a broad territory and supplying every advantage for educational, cultural, social and moral progress. The wagon train forded the Boise river near where the town of Eagle (Ada County) now stands. The river was high and a man by the name or Curtis was drowned.

Mr. McConnel first settled, in 1865, near the mouth of Haw creek (Gem County), where it empties into the Payette river. He took a squatter's right there but did not prove up on the property. In 1881 he took up a homestead of one hundred and sixty acres near the mouth of the Boise river (Canyon County), on an island between the two streams, and this island became known as McConnel's Island, which name it yet bears. The main irrigation on the island was was called McConnel Ditch and is still known as such. Mr. McConnel purchased adjoining lands on the island until he had over five hundred acres and upon the ranch he made his home for twenty-five years, raising there thousands of head of cattle. About fifteen years ago he he sold his property there and two years later he and his wife took up their abode in a comfortable home on the Boise Bench, near the Whitney school (Ada County). Mr McConnel is now farming ten acres of highly valuable land devoted to fruit and truck raising.

It was in 1871 that Mr McConnel was married in Iowa, to which state he returned on business. The lady when he wedded was Mary Maria Rogers, who was born in Illinois, April 21, 1846. They are now a venerable couple, aged respectively eighty-one and seventy-four years, and they have traveled life's journey happily together for forty-eight years. Their family numbers five living children, two sons and three daughters.
(1) Fred H., the eldest, born in 1875, is a civil engineer residing at Caldwell, Idaho. He is married and has one child, Roger Harmon McConnel, ten years of age.
(2) Mervin Gill, the second of the family, born in 1882 and living at Caldwell, is married (to Bessie D. Ragains) and has one child, Maurine Genevieve. Mervin G. McConnel, joining the United States army during the World War, was sent to France in April, 1918, and there served with the rank of first lieutenant.
(3) Cora J. is the wife of John L. Isenberg, of Caldwell, and the mother of two children: Mrs. Fredda Hathaway, the wife of Del Hathaway, of Caldwell; and Carl Isenberg.
(4) The second daughter of Mr. and Mrs David McConnel is Mrs. Emma J. Watkins, the wife of J. L. Watkins, of Parna, Idaho, by whom she has six children; Merle, Grace, Roscoe, Everett, Reed and Mary.
(5) The third daughter, Margaret B. McConnel, is at home.

From pioneer times to the present Mr. McConnel has been a witness of the growth and development of Idaho, having made his hone within its borders for about fift-eight years. There is no phase of its development with which he is not familiar. He has seen the state when it was a wild region of mountain fastnesses, of desert lands and of uncultivated valleys. He has lived to witness remarkable changes as the years have passed and he has borne his full share in relation to its agricultural development and progress.

History of Idaho, The Gem of the Mountains, Vol. III, pg 492-493.
Walter H. McConnel, Canyon Co., Idaho

W. H. McCONNEL
(Walter Hall McConnel)

W. H. McConnel, making his home in Caldwell, was born on his father's ranch, five miles west of the city, on the 10th of October, 1876. He is a representative of one of the pioneer families of this section of the state. His father, Benjamin C. McConnel, located on one hundred and sixty acres of raw land in Canyon county, on which he raised cattle and cut wild hay, for there was no alfalfa grown here in those days.

(Benjamin's) brothers, John and Dave McConnel, were associated with him in this work and they had between five and six hundred head of cattle. Benjamin C. and John McConnel came to Idaho in 1869, traveling by rail to Green River, Wyoming, and by stage the remainder of the way. Dave McConnel reached Idaho in the early '60s and settled at Emmett (Gem County), on the old Merve Gill place of one hundred and sixty acres, which he afterward sold and then farmed with his brother Benjamin following the latter's arrival in Idaho. Benjamin C. McConnel, after about ten years in this state, removed to the mouth of the Boise river and the brothers each then went into business independently.

Benjamin C. McConnel bought the old Judson place, while Dave McConnel purchased the Harry Adamson ranch. There were one hundred and sixty acres in the former tract and two hundred and forty in the latter. Upon their respective places the brothers farmed and engaged in stock raising, while John McConnel left Idaho for Colorado, where he passed away in 1918, while his wife and daughter both died there of influenza in 1919.

Dave McConnel and his wife are now living in Boise, the former having reached the age of eighty years, while his wife is but a few years younger, and yet they are enjoying a fair measure of health.

Benjamin C. McConnel was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hall, a native of Iowa, while her father was born in Ohio. They were married in the Hawkeye state and one child, William, was there born to them, being about three months old when they started for Idaho. As the years passed other children were added to the family to the number of nine.
(1) William married Zenlo Cole and has one son, Arthur, twenty-one years of age, who joined the United States Navy and is stationed in China. Having lost his first wife, he married Ida Carns.
(2) Charley, the second son of the family, is unmarried.
(3) Harlan B. married Sadie Smith, who was born in Idaho City, a daughter of Macum and Sarah Smith, who were numbered among the pioneers of the state, locating at Atlanta, Idaho,in the early '60's.
(4) The next of the family is W. H., of this review.
(5) Arthur, the fourth son, married Minnie Kingsbury, a daughter of H. S. Kingsbury, one of Idaho's pioneers, and they had one child, Lorin D.
Arthur was a graduate of Fremont College and for one term was assessor of Boise county. At the time of his death in 1917 he had charge of the S. & S. Store at New Meadows. He was also associated with his brother, W. H., in cattle raising, and at one time they owned over six hundred head. They were also engaged in the land business in Boise county.
(6) Roy C. married Alma Carlson and they have two children, Carl and Vernon.
(7) James E. married Ida Wheeler and they have five children: Paul, Pearl, Benjamin, Forrest and Idella.
(8) "Bessie" Elizabeth is the wife of Smith Gilliam and has one child, Velma.
(9) May is the wife of D. S. Raymond and has one child, Orin.

Liberal educational opportunities were accorded the members of this family. W. H. McConnel and his two brothers, Charley and Harlan, were students in Heald's Business College of San Francisco, California, in 1901 and 1902. W. H. McConnel then took up the occupation of farming, in which he has since continued, and for a time he was associated with his brother Arthur in cattle raising and they developed their interests until they were the owners of a herd of about six hundred head. They were also associated in real estate operations in Boise county, handling considerable land. W. H. McConnel still remains in active connection with farming interests and the careful management of his business affairs is bringing to him well earned success.

On the 21st of November, 1906, W. H. McConnel was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Vinson, of Nebraska, and they have become the parents of two children, Harry L. and Ardis Bessie. They make their hone at No. 1817 Dearborn street in Caldwell and have many friends in the city, the hospitality of the best homes being freely accorded them.

The McConnel family passed through all of the hardships of pioneer life. They lived in this section of the country when there was constant danger of Indian attack and some of the difficulties which they encountered and the hardships which they endured are almost beyond belief as one vists the highly developed region today. The father (Benjamin) survives, an honored pioneer settler of Idaho, and is now located in the Twin Falls country. For a half century the name of McConnel has been inseparably interwoven with the history of Idaho and throughout his entire life, covering a period of forty-three years, W. H. McConnel has lived in the state.

History of Idaho, The Gem of the Mountains, Vol. III, pg. 749-750 The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. Chicago, 1920.

Rosa McConnel Quinlan

Looking for information on Rosa McConnel Quinlan [1831, County Meath, Ireland-1901, Audrain County, Missouri]. Father's first name may have been John. Mother's maiden name was Gilbert. No brothers or sisters are known.
She came to USA before 1852 with her parents.
Rosa married Michael Quinlan [1824, County Tipperary, Ireland-1904, Audrain County, Missouri] possibly in Newburgh, Orange County, New York about 1852, but the records have not been found at the Catholic Church there. Family lived in Newburgh when their first two sons: James Ambrose Quinlan [1853-1916, Audrain County, Missouri] and John Joseph Quinlan [1857-1924, Audrain County, Missouri]
were born. John Joseph Quinlan baptized in Newburgh.
Family moved to Hannibal, Missouri when daughter, Rosa Ann was born in 1860. Youngest three children [Michael, Daniel Patrick and Mary] born in Indian Creek, Monroe County 1861-1867. The Quinlan family moved to Audrain County after 1871. No trace of the McConnels have been found in Missouri.
Would like any information on Rosa McConnel's parents' dates and location of birth, marriage in Ireland and death and burial probably in New York.

Surname spelled McConnell but spelled wrong on most documents. She probably had a brother, Pat McConnell who remained in Ireland. Pat had one son [named David or Daniel] who stayed in Ireland. His name is uncertain as the handwriting is unreadable on the only source document. Pat's daughter, Bridget McConnell Smyth [1860, Ireland-1952, Saugerties, New York] lived in New York. Her husband was John Smyth [1854, County Louth, Ireland-1939, Saugerties, New York]. I have their death certificates and her obit.
