How amazing, it is such a small world. I replied directly to Patti.

I am descended from Charles Horton Clark, who was one of the sons of W. D. S. Clarke. The Clark family isn't huge, but we haven't gone far. I have a other clark family here in Charlotte too, brothers, cousins...

I will try to get out to the Highland games this weekend. I have been trying to learn more about my Clark ancestors and where/when they originally came to the Union County area. I would love to meet a very distant cousin.

Please make sure that you email Patti at home. Her email address is: ppatricia2@aol.com

Patti is not at home and has not checked her home email. W D S is Patti's g g grandfather too. Patti lives in Charlotte. At the Museum of the Waxhaws, this Saturday from 10 to 4 Patti will be at the Waxhaw Highland Games at the museum site. You may want to come....because there may be family tents. Patti volunteers at the museum.

Patti has copies of early maps of the area where the Clarks and others lived. Early 1900. She also has the McCorkle's back to the 1700's when they came to the US. Patti may have a picture of W D S.

Do you realize that one of W D S granddaughter's is still living?? Exactly what is your line back to W D S? Patti is a great granddaughter of William Robert Clark and a granddaughter of Ruth Bernice Clark who married David C McMillion.

I work with Patti and my ork email address is
sarah.ferguson@carolinashealthcar.org. I would love to see the Price family tree that you have. I believe that my William D. S. Clarke was related by marriage to some Prices. I am happy to share with you what info I have on the related families as well.

I emailed you directly.

Nathan

I would love to see the letter from Ben Price to William D. S. Clarke. I have hit a wall with W. D. S. Clarke's father, James Clarke. I have not been able to find much information about William's father.

I have some McCorkle info, and I may have some Price records. If there are gaps you are trying to fill, I can look through my records.

Nathan

I'm trying to trace my great grandmother.A second marriage record(Laurens,Iowa newspaper, the Sun)says she was from Irvington, but doesn't mention a state.I assumed that it was Iowa because she was living in Laurens. It gives her mothers name as a Mrs. Broadsack. Her name was Antoinette McDermott/Willey and she lived in Laurens,Iowa as I said.Does any of your family that was around during the year 1911 when her second marriage happened know anything of her,or her family? We're trying to verify her maiden name, and we're not sure if Broadsack was her natural father,or a step father or such.Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Patrick McDermott

I am interesting in contacting anyone in the McCorkle line who lives now near Hope-Prescott,Nevada County, Arkansas.

We have started annual McCorkle reunion in Little
Rock and would like to contact you. I believe our McCorkle lines are related, having migrated to Ark from Union County North Carolina area about 1897.

Family history says our McCorkle family came 1st to Montgomery County(Caddo Gap) Arkansas, because other family members had already made the move and sent back word to come also. Then they lost track of each other as our faily moved to Faulkner County about 1910-1915.

Our next reunion will be in spring of 2010 and would love to meet any McCorkl descendents.
Nell

Since no one else has replied, I will answer my own question since I have found my McCorkles. I found the McCorkels not in Carroll Co. but Haralson Co. in the 1870 and 1880 census. Margaret was one of about 6 girls and one boy, Mathew Anderson, born to Jane C. and John McCorkle also know as "Jincey" a take off on her name "Jane C.". In the 1870 and 1880 census, Margaret is divorced from William Ward Marable and back in Haralson Co where she was born and where her brother, Mathew, and her mother still live. Margaret never remarried. When she went back to Haralson Co from Paulding Co she took her 3 children, Mintora, Elizabeth, and William James, with her. The two girls when they became of age returned back to their father, William Ward, in Paulding Co. The boy William stayed with his mother and sometime after 1880 they moved to Double Springs, Winston Co, Alabama. William married a Mary Downs in Double Springs around 1890 and his mother, Margaret died of TB in 1892.

Helen and David,

You are very welcome.

Coincidentally, I am just now reading a very fascinating book titled:
"Three Years With Quantrill, A True Story Told by His Scout John McCorkle"
published by University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN 0-8061-d056-3.

btw ... I was able to acquire the new paperback [originally published in 1914] at a good price directly from Amazon.com)

Notes for its back cover:
"This famous memoir by John McCorkell is the best published account by a scout who 'rode with Quantrill'. McCorkell was a young Missouri farmer of Southern sympathies who became a prominent member of William Clarke Quantrill's infamous guerrillas. They ..."
- University of Oklahoma Press
"As a rare first handhand account of the actions of one of the most infamous groups in US History, it is indispensable for those interested in Quantrill or guerrilla warfare"
- The Courier
"This (book) makes for interesting reading and helps balance what still remains a badly skewed picture of the Missouri-Kansas border war"
- Kansas History

Needless to say its also interesting to read a first hand account of what it was like to ride with Jesse and Frank James, the Younger brothers, "Bloody" Bill Anderson, etc. as well as what it was like to ride with their boss Quantrill.

Good luck with your genealogical search and if you obtain a copy of the aforementioned book ... I hope you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying it now.

All the best,

Jack McCorkell

Jack - Thank you so much for clarifying clans, septs, etc and also all the information on the IOM. This information certainly gives me more work to do, but, will gladly and excitedly do so as I am wondering if the McCorkle in my husband's family (Mattie McCorkle married Samuel Scott; my husband's family name) could have been given the crest/coat of arms) for something he did. The crest is on a card in family papers of my great-aunt-in-law and is much older than 40 years. We are also wondering if, by marriage, my husband and I are related many generations ago!! Thank you again, Helen Michaelsen Scott and David Chapman Scott

Dear McCorkles, et al

It's probably unwise or even misspent time tracing down a McCorkle clan connection in Scotland anyway as this pre ninth century Manx family's existence precedes and super-cedes any connections with the family name amongst the Dalraida clan name formations in Scotland. The McCorkell/ill/hill/le/endale(s) are actually direct descendants of Thorkitel, the oldest son of the first Norse King to a) establish a dominant colony in Man and b) who along with his older son and their direct Norse/Manx descendants' maintained controlling influence on large areas of Western Scotland, Western England, Western Wales and Eastern Ireland for many generations, through which their efforts established and organized the Glasgow, Belfast, York, Dublin and Angsley Norse settlements ... which as we all know to be major cities now ... so its actually odd to attach any relationship import to clans and septs whose ancestors in all probability were ruled at one time or another by this Norse King, his son and their Torkitel -> McCorkell/le/ill/hill/etc descendants from Man.

Another interesting point on this topic is that the Isle of Man's Tynwald parliamentary body is the oldest (over a thousand years now) still continuously functioning government organization on earth today ... and the Corkells, (it became fashionable on the Isle of Man to drop the Mc prefix from family names a couple of hundred years ago) Corkles, Corkills, Corkhills families frequently, but intermittently, maintain some professional (usually finance/trade/etc ministers) managing roles in the governance of the tiny island nation of Man.

If one can trace one's family to their line's departure from the IOM, then one has a reasonable chance to trace the rest of their IOM family lineage significantly back in time.

So, given the historical depth of this somewhat rare family name from a tiny island nation, genealogical mining efforts should certainly be more interesting if less efforts were expended attempting to attach clan or sept connections and more efforts were devoted to connecting up actual relationships to this very fascinatingly productive royal Manx-Viking/Celt line instead.

Jack McCorkell
(... whose ancestors migrated to Ulster directly from Man without stops in Scotland. In that regard, we were fortunate with being able to accurately connect up our lineage, while at the same time avoiding the common misstep of attempting to incorrectly connect up a Scottish Clan/Sept lineage as the family's point of origin.)
Further to my last posting on this subject, the McCorkle line under discussion (descending from Major Francis McCorkle) is definitely from Appin, Argyll. They were not a clan unto themselves, but were adherents (followers) to the Stewarts of Appin. If you are searching for a crest (that part of a full achievment of arms that sits atop the helm or "knight's helmet"), you could wear the crest-in-strap-and-buckle (clansman) of the Stewarts of Appin (a unicorn's head resting on a torse, with the motto: "Quiddher Wil Zie"). As for the arms displayed as being for the McCorkle family . . . if they are genuine, then may be English (not Scottish). In any event, it would be contrary to the laws of Scottish Arms to display the arms of another individual.
I am also descended from these McCorkles, through my Fielder grandmother---and I have researched this extensively. If you want to see an example of how a real Grant of Arms (referred to as Letters Patent) from the Lord Lyon, please see attached file.

Reference family crests---there is no such thing under Scottish heraldic law. Coats of arms (full achievement of arms) are granted by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms for Scotlnad, on an individual basis only. In other words, the arms belong to a specific individual and are not heriditary family "property". However, if one can prove descent from an armigerous individual, they may apply to the Lord Lyon for a derivative grant of arms. In other words, you can ask to have your ancestor's arms granted to you with what is referred to as "differencing"---something that makes them unique to you. This costs around $4,000 in fees (approximately). As for the McCorkles from which you are descended, I do not believe there have ever been any Scottish arms granted to a McCorkle from Argyll (more specifically Appin).

The Waddle surname and Joel McCorkle names are unfamiliar to me. I have an abstract of a marriage bond in Mecklenburg, NC that cites the marriage date of James and Sarah M. on 15 Nov. 1836. My family records (typed family history from my ggrandfather - no valid support for any of it) show that Sarah's middle name was Harriett and that they were married on 17 Nov. 1836, two days different.

I have not yet looked at the actual bond to see if the M middle initial could have been mistaken for an H. According to my family records, Sarah H. was born on 20 May 1813 and died on 10 Jul 1895. I believe James Clarke was born on 11 Nov 1811 and died on 4 Feb 1857.

My records indicate that Sarah H.'s parents were James McCorkle Junior and Mary Cousar (or Cowser). I also have a transcript of a McCorkle-Price family bible that has the birth date for Sarah H. as 20 May 1813. Sounds like maybe we have different Bibles.

There is a large family of Clark's descended from Burrell Clark that lived in the Union County area further to the east from where I believe my known Clark's lived near Waxhaw, NC. They are most likely related, but I have not been able to establish a connection.

I can share much more information if any of this sounds like your ancestry. There is a Price-McCorkle cemetery outside of Charlotte I have visited where some of my Clarke's are married. I have photos if you are interested. My James is buried there as J. Clarke, but I do not think that Sarah H. is buried there. She remarried and I suspect is buried with her second husband elsewhere.

Do you mind sharing a copy of your bible records? I will share mine with you if you email me at clark_nathan.com, and I'll reply with what I have. If our McCorkles are the same, I can share photos of the cemetery gravestones if you cannot visit yourself.

Clarke's in Waxhaw, Union County, NC

I am looking for any information on James Clark/e (b. 11 Nov 1811, d. 4 Feb 1857. He married (17 Nov 1836) Sarah Harriet McCorkle (b. 20 May 1813, d. 10 Jul 1895). They had the following children:

James P. Clarke (b. 1837, d 1842)
John B. Clarke (b. 1839, d. 1862) - civil war
Mary Jane Clarke (b. 1841, d. 1857)
Sarah Ann Clarke (b. 1843, d. 1844)
Archiebald M. Clarke (b. 1845, d. 1864)
Franklin M. Clarke (b. 1848, d. 1902)
William D. S. Clarke (b. 1851, d. 1928) - my direct ancestor
Margaret E. Clarke (b. 1853, d. 1853)
Martha M. Clark (b. 1854, d. ?)

I believe they lived in Waxhaw, Union County, NC. There are a lot more McCorkles and later Clark/e's in that area.

I hit a dead end with the patriarch here, James Clark. I have more information on his wife's family, the McCorkle line. Please let me know if any of this looks familiar to you.

Willing to share information.

Does anyone have information on the McCorkle Family Crest. The motto on Stephen McCorkle's tombstone, "Vigueur de Dessus" is the motto of the O'Brien family. Can anyone clarify that for me. I'm stumped.

Bill Edwards
bill.edwards@comcast.net

Re: Clarke's in Waxhaw, Union County, NC

According to my records, James Clark was married to Sarah Miller McCorkle, eldest child of Joel McCorkle and his wife, Elizabeth (Waddle) Waddell. I have extensive information on her family. Her birthdate was February 16, 1805, according to a typed copy of the McCorkle Family Bible. She was born in Mecklenburg County, NC. They were married November 15, 1836, also in Mecklenburg County. Unfortunately, I have no information on James Clark. Would be happy to know more about both James and Sarah, according to your records--this would help assure me that our Sarah is one and the same. Joel moved his family away from the Mecklenburg area, to Blount Co., TN, then to Colbert Co., AL. This might be the reason why we do not have info on Sarah's family in our records. Thanks!
