My name is Phillip shulsky. I am decended from Patrick McCotter (married to Lucy McCotter) who lived (and is buried) in Ill. I'm looking to trace the family name as far back as I can. I have found conflicting information which leads me to either Ireland, or Scotland. I would appriciate any assistance anyone can give.

This message list is a little old so not sure if anyone is still likely to respond? I'm a McCotter from N. Ireland, the name originally comes from Kilrea, where my Grandfather was born, in County Antrim (although I have seen it listed in some official/church records under Ballymoney, which is reasonably close). The furthest my line goes back is approx to 1760 (give or take 10 years as date of birth unknown).

I was wondering if anyone knew what religion the various McCotters that emigrated to the US etc out of N.I., particulary Co. Antrim were? The name is predominantly Catholic, but my McCotters were Protestant (Presbyterian. Being rarer I suspect there is good chance that all the Protestant McCotters from Co. Antrim (perhaps even NI) were closely related.

Would be great to hear from anyone that there may be a link with.

Searching for antecedents for Caroline Elizabeth McCotter (Mecotter), b, abt, 1826, prob. Dorchester County, MD, (m. Joseph H. Barger), d. 9 May 1891, Baltimore, buried Mt Olivet, Balto.
Old family notes list her father as James Mecotter(sic) and her mother as Mary Smith (who is described as having come, with her parents, from England). There is mention of Federalsburg.
Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? Many thanks.

James Kevin McCotter, 53, of Lakeside died Monday. He was born in St. Louis and was a construction framer.

Survivors include his sisters, Carol Estes of St. Louis, Mary McCotter of Federal Heights, Colo., and Patricia Saulter of Fresno, Texas; and brother, John of San Marcos.

Celebration of life: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, 11435 Rocky Lane, Lakeside.

Douglass Grant McCotter was born ~1819 at Plattsburgh, NY and died 9/3/1907 at his Summer home at Smithtown Long Island, NY. He was a resident of Elizabeth, NJ and was a real estate dealer. He was survived by his wife, 2 daughters, and 3 sons. He supposedly led a company of volunteers in the Civil War. I am trying to locate his burial place and the regiment that he served during the Civil War.

Hi sinead.I from uk but my grandparents are from belfast.They moved to the luton area over 50 years ago.My grandfathers name was william Mccotter and my grandmother jane Mconnel (not sure of spelling).I know they lived in Short strand area.They had nine children,the eldest patrick,molly,ann,billy.ect.

I may be the man you need to talk to. I have a james Mccotter in my family tree that was born in Ireland son of Dennis McCotter. This James McCotter died in prision duering the civl war. Both me and Cathy Pouls, are working on this. there is another James McCotter in her line to but they are not the same person. Sinead - it is great to finally have a name in Ireland to contact about the McCotter family! I have been searching for any and all relations of the Dennis McCotter family for a few years and keep hitting roadblocks when I get to the UK!

Dennis was in Antrim Co, Ireland ... I believe he was born there in 1871 and had something like 5 children with his wife, Ann Workman. I have a pretty extensive family tree that I would be happy to share with you...

I am in update New York (USA) and would very much appreciate hearing from you at your earliest convenience to compare McCotter notes!

This information is from a living grand-daughter of Ruth Workman and Cochrane Alexander. If you have any additional information on the arrival of Ann Workman McCotter into the USA I would appreciate it. Also any dates on Ann and Dennis?

Thanks for you reply, I would greatly appreciate any information you have regarding Ann Workman McCotter and her ancestors. I am afraid that I don't have very much information. Verbal family history from Ann's great-grand-daughter is as follows:
Ruth (Workman) came to the USA with her mother (Ann Workman McCotter) and family friends, the McCotters- from Ireland-, 1838. They were shipwrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia. Ruth and her mother, Ann Workman McCotter came from the Antrim Mt. area of Scotland.

I am looking for information on Ann Workman McCotter and her daughter Ruth Workman. This must be the same Ann which you refer to as the spouse of Dennis McCotter. It is presumed by our family that her marriage to a previously unknown McCotter was a second marriage for her. Do you have any more information regarding Ann and /or Dennis?

My grandfather was called James McCotter born around the 1920's. I would be keen to trace my ancestry back as far as possible any leads would be appreciated. Patrick McCotter came to USA from County Cork Ireland and lived in Pearl, Illinois. He had 4-5 sons, one of which was my grandfather, John Leo McCotter. Born 3-16-1895 and died 11-30-1945.

I have an article from a 1954 newspaper in Pamlico County NC that states my ancestor, Hezekiah McCotter, came from Ireland in 1700 and established farm land on McCotter's Hammock. He had two brothers, James and ? who settled in Virginia and Illinois. I wonder if this James McCotter is your ancestor. Also, there is apparently some McCotter family history in Blue Island, Illinois. (some of this is inaccurate relating to my ancestors, but perhaps there is some for you) They are having a reunion this Aug. 20. I found out about it indirectly and can barely read the print. I will try to contact them.

The info I have found concerns another James born
abt 1760 as he took his Oath of Allegiance to
the State of Maryland in 1778. I have him
still in Dorchester County in 1800 and I believe
he shows up on a census there later also. He
would be a nephew of my James. I doubt if he
is the right one for you, but one never knows.

I don't know if there is a connection here for you
or not - My James McCotter was born in Maryland
in 1737. The first McCotter to arrive in this
country came to Maryland about 1658. His name
was Alexander. We know only that he came from
somewhere in the British Isles. HOWEVER, a
Dennis McCotter came to New York with several
children about 1840. Interestingly, he settled
near my family in Vermont (about 30 miles away).
I have documented that his son, JAMES, had a
mortgage guaranteed by my family so I know there
is a definite connection there but exactly
what kind remains to be seen. This Dennis
came from Ballymoney in County Antrium. (Near
you isn't it?) He married Ann Workman. Dennis
was born about 1771. Is there any way you can
dig into your records over there to see if
you can locate a birth record for Dennis or a
passenger list that might state his country
of birth?
