I am searching for info on Hugh Daniel McCoy, b. abt. 1750-60 in the Highlands of Scotland. According to his son, Daniel McCoy, he was conscripted into the British army while on business for his father in a Scottish seaport town. He was sent to New York and placed in Lord Howe's army. He was wounded in an engagement and taken to the home of John Franklin in New Jersey. Franklin persuaded McCoy's commanding officer to muster him out of the army. McCoy married Jemima Franklin and later moved to Burke Co., North Carolina. About 1795 Hugh Daniel McCoy left his wife and 6 children to return to Scotland to claim some property which he supposed belonged to him. The ship went down at sea and all on board were lost. Does anyone have such a story passed down in their family?
