I have a David McCracken in my database who was the son of William and Agnes Ann Nancy Trusdell b in Ireland. This David was born about 1836 and was one of 8 chilren. This family lived for many years in Lowell, MA having come to the US from Quebec, Canada via Sparta, WI

2. Margaret McCracken b Abt 1839
3. Jane A. McCracken b Abt 1844
4. William McCracken b 15 Aug 1844

Does anyone have any family info from Ireland before they emmigrated to US? My gggrandfather left County Down about 1850, travelled thru NY City, settled in Pittsburgh, PA, for awhile, then moved to Farmington, PA (now Fayette County). It is very likely that they settled in SW PA to be near family.

Yes, I saw mention of that in the Washington Co. book from 1893 where one of the relatives went back to Glasgow to visit famiyl that had not been heard from in a long time. I've never been able to pin the lead down though.

McCrackens only spent a short time in Down and Londonderry Counties, coming from Glascow, Scotland. I know some of our family visited the McCrackens in Scotland in the late 1800s.

The story regarding my McCracken family is that they were of the McGregor (spelling unknown) clan and they joined the McCracken clan and took on the McCracken name.

My grandmother was Carrie Eleanor McCracken b 10 Sep 1885 in Ozone, Johnson, AR, daughter of Isaac McCracken b 3 Nov 1846 in Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada and Delia Marial Allen 18 Mar 1846 in Comstock, Kalamazoo, MI; m 15 Jul 1867 in Sparta, Monroe, WI.

Isaac is the son of William McCracken b abt 1809 in Down, Ireland, d 11 Jan 1868 in Lowell, Middlesex, MA and Agnes Ann Nancy Trusdell or Trusell b Mar 1808 in Down, Ireland, d 11 Dec 1898 in Lowell, Middlesex, MA. Parents immigrated about 1842 into Canada. 1880 US Census shows place of birth of father as Scotland.

Isaac's seven siblings (I have conflicting dates and who was born where) were:
1) Ann McCracken b Ireland;
2) David McCracken b abt 1836 in Ireland;
3) Margaret b abt 1839 Canada; m George W Harriman and John Keefe
4) Jane A McCracken b abt 1844 in Ireland; m William Letson
5) William Samuel McCracken b 15 Aug 1844 in Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada;
6) Susan V McCracken b 12 Mar 1849 Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada; m Charles L Glidden; and
7) Agnes McCracken b 1851 Huntingdon, Quebec, Canada

That is my family also, althoughI am descended through John W. The rest of the family ended up in or around Daviess County, Indiana, and there is a county website that had some things on McCrackens. My John married Sarah Jane Webber, the Webbers seem to have moved with the McCrackens or about the same time and ended up in Indiana. Several of the brothers, John and Richard, married Webber sisters. That is how the Dutch in the family came to be. There is a good book by a distant cousin that lists Webbers and McCrackens from New Amsterdam to Indiana though the lists in Indiana are not complete. The book is called Dutch Webbers in Illinois and Indiana by Virginia Webber Hunt. She may have some copies left, about $20 if interested I have her email. She lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin. There is also many relatives in and around Indianopolis and Washington, Indiana, Jeannie Everett McCracken being one who did a lot of searches.

In our Family Bible, my ancestor Davie Johnson came across the ocean. He carried a Red Hawthorn Cane with Buckhorn Handle. Red Hawthorn is of the Johnson/Johnston Clan. He was born 1726, died 1832, 106 years of age, Parke County, Indiana.

Yes, all of that fits in well with what I have accumulated thus far, although until now I was unaware of Andrew's daughter Nancy.

Washington Co. PA, Amwell Township, 10-Mile Creek, and lots of family moving to Ohio(One thing, you likely know this already, but always double-check to be sure that it was not Ohio COUNTY Va or WV they moved to. I have been tripped up by this once or twice)all this jives perfect with my own research.

The link with NJ is VERY critical as my research has also shown that to be perhaps the first "stop" along the way from Europe to Pennsylvania.

NOTE: In 1850, Joseph McCracken's (Perhaps David and Andrew's brother or cousin) oldest son Alexander lists his birthplace as "New York" on the Census and he appears in the Mortality Schedule of the 1860 Census (Died in 1859 in Greene Co.) and his place of birth is listed as "New Jersey".

So this is VERY useful data to know that they may have lived in the Morristown area. Until now I had no real idea of just WHERE in NJ to look.

You contact timeing is very good. Just last week I discovered the burial location of Joseph McCracken in East Pike Run Township, Washington Co. PA. Until now, all other trees have listed this "Joseph" as the son of David and nephew of Andrew. His tombstone gives his age at death in 1836 as 91...so this in NOT possible anymore. If they ARE related, then they must be brothers or cousins.

John MacCracken has a sister name Agnes (Nancy). Son and daughter of Andrew MacCracken & Sarah Jennison/Jammison?
Nancy married my ancestor Levi Harrod Johnson about 1812.
Andrew b. 1760 Down/Londerry Co, North Ireland. John born on ship coming over to America, 1793. Andrew lived with his brother David, washington co, PA. David came to America from Scotland in 1768. My family related to the Harrod families, Levi Harrod, James Harrod founded Harrodsburg, KY, and Boonesboro, KY with Daniel Boone. Others of family found Lexington, KY. The MacCrackens were from the Highlands of Scotland.

David MacCracken who came from Down County, Ulster Ireland, in 1768 is my ancestor's older Brother, Andrew, who came to America 1793, with wife Sarah Jennison/Jammison? Their daughter Nancy (Agnes) married my ancestor Levi Harrod Johnson b. 1789. My ancestor David Johnson, b. 1763 Morristown, NJ. I think MacCrackens also lived there. My Great Great Great Great Grandmother, Sarah McCracken, was born in Mason County, KY on Feb 21 1791 (or 1793). Her parents were John McCracken (1750/60-1832) and Elizabeth Wood (1765-1832). Sarah married Jesse McGehee on Aug 31, 1816 in Mason County. Sarah died in Clay County, IL around 1871 and is buried in Hoosier Prairie Cemetery. Sarah had 11 brothers and sisters - Richard, Ruth, Rachael, William, Elizabeth, John, Nancy, Thomas, Louisa, Suzannah, and Hannah.

Does this McCracken family sound familiar to you?

The only thing I have proof of is Emma's birthdate of Feb. 5 and she put Ft. Worth as her place of birth on her son Hugh's birth certificate. Most of everthing else is a guess due to family stories and finding Ely's family in Ft. Worth with a daughter born in 1874 with a middle name starting with an E. She is said to have named Hugh Elbert after a family member. Ely's father was Hugh.

My great-grandmother Emma McCracken was born in or near Ft. Worth, Tx. Feb. 5, abt.1874. She left the family abt 1888 at a very young age. The 1900 Census lists her father as born in Illinois and mother born in Mississippi. Older family members remember her mentioning the Indian Territories. I found the Ely McCracken family in the 1880 Tarrant Co. census with a Nance E. born abt. 1874. I am wondering if she may be Nancy Emma. I am looking for a possible link with her and Callie because an uncle says he remembers her talking about a Callie. Other locations mentioned are Big Spring,TX, Floresville and La Vernia,TX area.

In 1900 she was already married. Census of Travis Co., Texas 1900 lists her as Acosta, Emma wife of Antonio Acosta. Also listed is son Hugh(my grandfather), and daughter Lillian. She lists father born in Illinois and mother born Mississippi. Census is barely readable. Birth certificate for Hugh lists her being born in Ft. Worth, Tx.

Just a little history...
In the 1600's, King John wanted to quiet the rebel Catholic Irishman in Northern Ireland and make them loyal subjects. He asked loyal Protestant Scotsman to move to the Belfast area. King John confiscated the land and redistributed it to his loyal Scotsman. There has been fighting ever since. The Irish and Scottish McCrackens are branches of the same family.

I believe John McCreighan (father of John McCracken b1865) was one of three brothers (John, Arthur, Michael) who emigrated from Ireland to Attleboro. All are the children of Edward McCreighan and Mary. Additionally I know John's mother's maiden name, which was McCourt.

Whilst researching one of my ancestors (John McCreton b~1834) I searched the Kildress parish records. Although I couldn't find a record of my John I did come away with a small list of marriages and baptisms with the namess McCreighan/McCretton in Kildress in the 1840's, 1850's and 1860's. The list is fragmentary as the records were incomplete and hard to read.

Since returning home I have tried to link any of these records to people who subsequently appeared in England or America. From the dates of birth and parents names I believe the Arthur and Michael in Attleboro correspond to two of the baptisms in Kildress. John McCreighan in Attleboro has the same parents names as Michael and Arthur. In addition, although separate households, John is living in the same residence as Michael on the 1870 census.

The baptism records for Arthur and Michael give the parents names as Edward McCreighan and Mary McArt. The age for Michael is a direct match with records in the US although Arthur's age is a few years out.

I believe there is at least one other set of siblings with a link back to Kildress who came to Attleboro slightly later than these three. Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to find a solid link between these and the three brothers. These were Sarah Ann b1869, Arthur J b1874, Catherine b1876 and Mary b1884. From US marriage / death records their parents names were Hugh McCretton and Ann Murphy. There was a marriage in Kildress in 1863 of Hugh McCrettan and Ann Murphy. The dates and names are consistent but unfortunately I don't have records of baptisms later than 1845 to corroborate them.

In any event there seems to be too many McCrettons appearing in what is a relatively small town for at least some of them not to be related to each other.

Although I can't say that I am related to you in any way there are people on ancestry descended from both of the other two possible brothers (Arthur and Michael). The descendants of the other two brothers settled on the spelling McCretton.

I have started a small public tree on Ancestry of McCrettons in Attleboro in the second half of the 19th and the early part of the 20th centuries and I have tried to find supporting documentation for as much as possible. Please have a look and let me know if you can add anything. One thing I haven't been able to find is a record of John McCreighan and Bridget Nugent's wedding.

James McCracken 1754-1824

Does anyone have documentation of this James McCracken's Revolutionary War service or pension records? I have a few secondary sources indicating he was in a South Carolina regiment, possibly Sumter's SC Brigade, and lists of possible campaigns and commanding officers. (Bobby Gilmer Moss lists 10 McCrackens and McCrackins in her "Roster of South Carolina Patriots" (1983), including James).
But no matter how I ask, the National Archives can't come up with any service records. I know they exist because my aunt says she corresponded with another descendent in the 1980's who had copies from the National Archives.

Can anyone give me a clue about where these records might be, so that I can try to order them again? Or perhaps my James McCracken is not the man who served at all?

Ah yes....the little "town" of McCracken in Geene County....consisting of about two weather-beather wooden buildins and personal dwellings. LOL. Not to make fun, I just went there myself for the first time last month.

I found that the road it's on...McCracken Rd....leads down and ends right at the WV Penn border near one of the old family farms in Camron WV.

Well, my line. The fartherst back I have traced my direct line with 100% certainty is to Joseph McCracken in Fallowfield Township, Washington County Penn. He had at least one son, David born in 1799 and who lived in Fallowfield until 1858 when he moved the family to Camron. He died in 1775 and is buried with his wife anf 1 or 2 children in lazear Cemetery in Richill Township, Greene County Penn.

I have no way of knowing for certain just WHO joseph's father was but others have named him as David McCracken who came to America from COunty Down Ireland in 1768. David and his brother Andrew...who came over in 1793...where documented in some of the early written histories of Washingotn County. Very little if anything is know of David' children but Andrew's are very well codumented as one of them lived well into his 80s....long enough to write the biographical piece in 1882 upon which most McCracken research in that area begins.

If you have not already seen it, the book to which I refer is online in many different places. try "Biographical Sketches of Washington County Pennsylvania" in a search and you should have some luck.

The family line once David Mccracken (2nd) came to Camron in 1858 is easy to trace.

If there are any more detailed bits of data I can be help with, you have but to ask.

I am a direct decendant of this McCracken line...David McCracken (1799-1875) is my GGGG Grandfather. My portion of the family came down from Marshall to Kanawha County in 1925.

John & Bridget's son, John, married Mary Ellen Keane and they had Margaret Dorothy in 1901, who was my maternal grandmother. She moved to NY and bore my mother out of wedlock in 1943 and kept it secret from the family until her death. So it hasn't been easy finding stuff out. Thank you so much already for the info on John & Bridget. I was really stumped.
My mother got in touch with Eleanor (McCracken) Maceil in the early 1990's, and she and I are sporadically in touch. We met Margaret's brother Henry in 1991 and he was already well into his 90's and very spry. So we have hopes for the longevity.

By the way John McCracken(McCreighan)of the ,MacNeachhtain, McNauchtan Clan (name variants) fron county Tyrone, Ireland (27 Nov. 1830) (27 June 1907) married 1857 Bridget Nugent (Nov. 1831) (2 Nov. 1906). Looks like we have some longevity on our side. To live till their mid 70's was pretty good for the time! Their children were Mary, Catherine, John,James, Elizabeth and Sarah who died in her infancy.

lol that seems to be the problem, i have little details. im afraid i am not as good at this kind of thing as it seems the rest of you are, i have seem to gotten stuck at Charels Clinton McCracken who died 3-10-1940 in Chillicothe, Livingston, Missouri. after that i cant find much more.
