I do not have a Fred listed but my McCraine/McCraney is from Wilkinson County,MS = Woodville, (& Amite County)near the LA border. I know for a fact that some of the children moved to LA.

Murdock McCraney .... later changed to McCraine and later to other spellings and I have seen it spelled McCrany, McRaine or McCrane. Came from Isle of Jura off Scotland coast to Cape Fear, NC in 1700's 3 brothers..

It is very possible your ancestors are from this line, good hunting.

Kansas City, April 13- A special to the Journal from South McAlester, I.T.,
says:

Five men were killed and two severely burned today by a gas explosion
in Mine 77, of the Kansas & Texas Coal company at Carbon, I.T.

The injured: Robert McCraney and Ben Hamilton.

The cause of the explosion is unknown. Sevnty-five men were in the
mine, but all escaped injury except the seven who were working in
the chamber where the explosion occurred. All of the dead miners
except McMullen had families.

I am looking for information about the parents of Nancy McCraney, born about 1814 in North Carolina, married Phillip Sellers, born about 1813 in South Carolina. They eloped in 1834 and moved to Pikes County, Alabama. They had three children in Alabama: Mary. Eliza, and Margaret who later married James Denley of Mississippi, and Samuel Sellers who was born in Mississippi. From what I understand, Nancy's mother and father were from Scotland.

Do you know when your immigrant forefathers came to this country and where they came from? I am related to both the McCranie and McCravey families. The McCranie's (by many spellings) from the the Isle of Jura just off the western coast of the Scottish Highlands. Family history says that our McCravey immigrant (who shortly dropped the Mc from his name) came from County Roscommon in Ireland, but nobody has ever found any evidence of it.

I came across the information below and believe that the Eva Macreny listed below is the same one that married George Backus who I descend from.

The marriage certificate for George's son Peter Backus (born 1819) to his second wife Martha E. McIntyre Mosher, lists mother as Eve McCrany or McCravy (The LDS site lists it as McCravey).

I believe that my George Backus is the one baptised 2 June 1792 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Herkimer, Herkimer County, NY (I believe his father to be George Backus).

I believe that the John Macreny listed below would have been born about 1760. He may have been the brother of William McCraney (born 1762 at Newburgh, Orange, NY, who married Sarah Fowler). The LDS site lists William's father as a John McCraney (born about 1736). That John McCraney is reputed to be the son of William McCraney and Dorothy Barnes.

Does anyone have proof of any of this? I am interested in discussing the McCraney line of New York (or Connecticut) with others researching it.

I am searching for information on Murdock and his son John McCraine, and other siblings.
John McCraine/McRainy/McCraney married 1828 in Wilkinson County to Nancy Germany. Nancy was born 1803/04 in GA and is found a widow living next to Murdock on the census in 1860 with her children. Murdock's will proves that these are his grandchildren, I have copy.
I have been searching for years for Nancy Germany...perhaps a adopted name or previous marriage. William Varnell signed the marriage bond, and they named Albany V. (married John Johns, son of William L. Johns and Rachel Courtney) and Martha V. as 2 of their children.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I am seeking more information about the Newton County, Mississippi family of H. J. Brown (6/20/1833 - ?), Selina Unknown (3/8/1829 - ), and Henrietta Jane Brown (8/30/1863 - 3/10/1942). Henrietta Jane Brown is my great-grandmother. She married my great-grandfather William Thomas McCraney (2/18/1860 - 3/5/1931) in Newton County on 11/2/1880. Information passed to me by a Kirby descendant of this line indicated H.J., Selina, and Henrietta were recorded on the Page #1 Beat 3 June 1890 Newton County census.

I wish to learn more about H. J. Brown's family, what Selina's maiden name was and more about her family, and if Henrietta had any siblings. Would also like to know how many children she and William Thomas McCraney had.

From what I understand, "Black Irish" is a
term used for descendants of Spaniards and
Irish, resulting in dark hair and eyes, with
a little darker skin than the fair skin of the
red-headed Irish everyone pictures. Hollyman
history goes back to a William Hollyman from
Ireland, but we haven't been able to connect
to him yet.

In a family story that I have about the wagon
train the DeLongs were on in 1854 or 1858, it
says that they spoke and read Gaelic fluently,
and knew only a little English. The DeLongs
traveled west to California with the Burke
families, also Gaelic speaking. The story
states that they do not know how long the
families had been in America.

My husband's Hollyman ancestry is very
mysterious. We have info back to the late
1800's, but have heard they were of Black
Irish descent. Sophorina McCraney married
William DeLong in Iowa. My maternal great-
great-great grandfather, Sampson Bethard,
married William DeLong's sister, Mary E.
DeLong in 1834 in Illinois. So McCraney is
from MY side of the family, and Hollyman is
from my HUSBAND's! It would be VERY interesting
to see if we have connections between the two
sets of ancestors! (I have found it before
where my father's cousin is married to my
mother's cousin! Nobody realized it until
they were invited to the same reunion TWICE!)

No one in my family is aware of their McCraney roots. My Grandfather was raised not knowing his father. William was born in Kinston, Al 17 June 1921. He died in Pasgagula, Miss in 1978. His mother's name was Pearl Russell. THe rumor is that his father raised another family somewhere near Montgomery, Al. I know this is a long shot but I would appreciate any morsel of information on my family name, thankyou.

I am somewhat confused at the apparent surprise you noted in the spelling of McRaney. I am a McRaney by birth and a great great granddaughter of Warren Gibson McRaney. None of my relatives have ever spelled the name with two C's. There are some McCraney's in MS but of a different family.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for. The story I have is Walter McCraney was born in Iowa and moved as a small boy to Wisconsin. He was raised there by a Henry Blanchard and family. I don't know the circumstances that led to this. But I am told the Blanchard's were good friends of his parents and they had followed each other to Wisconsin.

My grandfather grew up without ever knowing who his father was. From a family tree I found out his name was James McCraney. My grandfather's name was William Julian McCraney. His mother's name was Addie Pearl Russell. When James and Pearl were married they lived in Coffee County ALA. Rumor has it that James moved to Montgomery ALA and raised another family. Searching for information on William Mccraney md ? . had a brother named "mac". "Mac's" children were Phil Mccraney md. Ruby Johnson. and Maggie McCraney md. Ben Johnson. Oral report from granny says that "mac" had a lot of children, she just couldn't remember names.

WIlliam Mccraney had at least 2 female children in his marraige, but we have no names. He also had a son out of wedlock --William Roy Mccraney b. Sept. 22. 1903. If anyone knows of this line or has any information regarding this line. I would love to hear from you!

Any of this could have been in Clarke county, Jasper county, or Jones County Mississippi.
