McCreary/McCreery 1946 in Portadown & Belfast

I'm trying to research my dad's family and I have reached a dead end.

My Grandfather John (Jack) McCreary and Great grandfather George McCreery both came to Canada in the early 1900's. My grandpa Jack was born in 1911 came to Canada in 1924 and passed away in 1973 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. My great grandfather George McCreery passed away in 1946 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Canada. His wife Mary McCreary (nee Gibson) stayed in Ireland.

My father has in his possession the judicial adminstration of the estate of George McCreary from December 1946, which lists the children of George and Mary - and three of the addresses are in Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland.

Wife: Mary McCreary and son James McCreary was listed at:
22 Severn Street,
Off Dee Street
Belfast Ireland

Richard McCreary (McCreery)
22 Castle Ave.
Portadown,
County Armagh, Ireland

George McCreary (McCreery)
No. 8 Charles Street
Portadown,
County Armagh, Ireland

Frank McCreary (McCreery)
No. 2 Redmanville Raltylum
Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland

Sarah (nee McCreary) Haakanson was at:
41 Rodbourne Road
Swindon, Wiltshire
England

Samuel McCreary was listed as:
Pte. Samuel McCreary
No. 6978948 C. Company
1st. Cheshire Regiment
B.A.O.R.

My grandfather Jack's family only kept in touch with one cousin, George Haakanson who also has not kept in contact with any other family members.

I am wondering if any children or grandchildren of my great grandfather George, and if any of them could help with tracking the genealogy of our family. McCreary could be spelled either way, my grandfather went by McCreary and my great grandfather went by McCreery.

I am a direct descendant of Cherry Tree Joe McCreery. My paternal grandmother was a McCreery. In all my research, I've come across it spelled with two e's and an ea. But I've never seen any other variation. I did only go back as far as Cherry Tree Joe who was born in 1805 to Hugh and Nancy in Lycoming County, PA.

I've looked through my files, and sorry to say didn't come up with any "Christopher" : McCreery - McCleary - McClerry -McClory - McClery - McClary, nor any MacCreery, etc.

Does help to use the soundex when searching, for this surname seems to change spellings, with-in the same family, and generations.
My great-grandmother, spelled her maiden name as "McClory" or "McClary" depending on how one reads the way she wrote,or whoever wrote her name at the time, the "a" can be an "o", depending on the person looking at it.
Then again, her father spelled his name "McCreery & McCreary" as did her step mother.
Be glad to help down the road so please don't hesitate to ask.
HW.

Please don't confuse the Mc Creary with Mc Creery that will make your work twice as difficult. These were two very separate families. You will find Mc Creary can be found in Ireland but not the Mc Creery. I know that Jane Mc Creery was born in 1807 and died Sept. 1, 1898. She married James Cook, Sr around 1824-1825. They had nine children. Jane was the daughter of a James Mc Creery from Beaver, PA. I hope this helps you. But remember spelling counts. Good luck. Signed Jane

THANK YOU!! I am in Washington state and can only check records on ancestry.com, sites ie Rootsweb as people kindly post. A trip to Salt Lake City did not expand my McCreary tree. My guess was that Sarah GILMORE McCREARY is buried in Harmony U.P Cem in Harrisville, but no other McCreary are there. If most of her kids & husband died in a plague later 1850s as I guessed since I cant find them, where are they? A stone there says "Sarah McCreary d.19 Feb 1871 57y9m18d" This computes birth of May 1813. Her age in 1850 census with husband & kids was 32, 1860 living with another family (if its her) age 40, 1870 living with sis & B-I-L age 56. All different so I am very greatful for all possible info. I collect it and continuously puzzle the "what next" and "is it". Sheryl SLTREGELL@COMCAST>NET

Looking at the Census it looks like there mabe more that one at least two different McCREERY familes living there.

In the History of Schuyler Illinois,(Historical encyclopedia of Illinois, Chicago: Munsell Pub. Co., 1908, 1102 pgs.) It states that Hugh McCREERY arrived in the USA in and in 1828 acsended the ILL. river by steamboat. He was the first family of foreign residence to settle in Schuyler County,
His family consisted of Hugh his wife Sarah,Children William and his wife, Mathew, John, Margaret, Sarah and James.

They lived Rushville. their son William was the first person ever, in Schuyler Illinois to take out naturalization papers. He took them out in Morgan, AL.in 1826 and they reveal he landed in New Orleans, Feb, 7, 1825 and renounced allegiance to the King of Great Britain,

It also states that William and both his Parents (Hugh and Sarah) died in the cholera scourge of 1834.

I believe Hugh's son John is to be the John McCREERY you have in question.

Best regards
Kurt

There were another group of McCreery's in IL. They came from KY. in 1816. John, b. 10Nov1765 in VA, d. 6Oct1821 in Gallatin Co., IL, and is buried in Saline County, married Margaret/Peggy Black on 27/Mar/1787 in VA. John's father was named Robert and he and Margaret/Peggy had children named Mary Jane, William, Robert, Alexander, Sarah, Elijah, Agnes, Sarah, George, Allen, Charlotte, Julia Ann, Cynthia, Jane or Jean. Your John could easily be the grandson of John and Margaret.
How does your Jamison tie in with the McCreery's?

I have the paternity suit :) I am his gr-gr-granddaughter. My great grandfather, Elmer Blair Wissinger, was his illegitimate son. The only info I have on Bruce McCreery is from the 1870 censes, and the court papers pertaining to the paternity suit, listing Bruce McCreery as Blair's father and giving custody of Blair to his grandfather, Henry Wissinger. I saw a newspaper clipping that pointed to McKeesport as a possible residence for Bruce after that, but nothing solid.

My g-grandfather was the illegitimate son of Bruce McCreery. He was born in Cherry Tree, Indiana Co., PA, USA in 1884. Bruce McCreery was the son of William Edward McCreery. And, William was the son of Joseph McCreight McCreery (Cherry Tree Joe). I am having the hardest time tracking down Bruce McCreery after he left Cherry Tree, PA. I’ve heard that he moved to McKeesport, PA, but have no proof of this. Any information on Bruce McCreery, his wife and/or children would be greatly appreciated.

Wow you really are an angel to me.You have Robert and Maria to a tee.About Uriah< I had wondered if it was war related , I did not know it was a State Mental Hospital. Poor Uriah I am sure they did him no good, all they used back then was electrical shock , and Ice baths . I think you put the bldg in your younger years to better use. lolo I Live in Bay City you must have or are still in Michigan?I like your insites , and your research. I don,t know If I am remembering right or not so do not etch this in stone , but the Mccrear, I believe married into the Reubin's line in fenton.Yes my great grand was a sawfiler here in bay city at the gates mill , and I too love the homes on center made from wispering pines, but you should see the pilings when the river is down, if ever they pop out they will cause a problem , I often wonder how many others are down at the bottom.I am greatly interested in the Canada line . You asked about Maria Hoover Mccreery , Yes her parents Bergimin fairchild Hoover Married Mary Ann [Lawrence] Hoover in Thorald Canada .They returned to columbiaville Mich and are buried in Hollenbeck cemetery. After Robert died in 1989 Maria remarried Hollenbeck {silas}I just reread obit on Maria it says she was a resident of bay city since 1862 about 4 years before marriage to Robert.I will try to search the canada census for this new lead . I don,t know how to thank you for your help and good conversation. I hope we can continue to discuss these McCreerys. Thank You again , God Bless You --Marilyn

The collection of antiques is from the estate of the late
Josephine -Grant McCreery, who was married to a descendent
of one of the Bay Area's oldest pioneering families. (Mrs. McCreery's husband was Walter "Selby" McCreery whose grandfather, Andrew McCreery, came to the state in 1849 and built what was reputed to be one of the largest fortunes in the West. Selby's brother, Richard S. McCreery. lived in one of Hillsborough's first homes nearly three quarters of a century ago. Many of his descendants are still living on the Peninsula.)

McCREERY Fro NY, ILL. and CA 1750-1930? Famous Poet and a Famous REV.

Hello Board I am looking for the family or any connection to the New York, Illinois and California.
I have compiled a brief genealogy with some notes.
I believe the following family is related to mine in NY.
Thank You
Best regards
Kurt

Joseph MCCREERY JR. born 8 APR 1814 in the Fingerlakes region in (Spencer?) Brutus, Cayuga Co., New York d. 2 DEC 1892 in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. Joseph was of a M. E. family, He was also the nephew of(REV.) Dr. Samuel
Lucky. Joseph was the Son of REV. Joseph MCCREERY Sr. b: 1790 d.1859 and Jane LUCKEY b: 1792 d.1859 and the grandson of John McCREARY.
His father Methodist REV. Joseph McCREERY SR. abt b.1790 m. Jane LUCKEY she was the sister the famous Methodist REV, Samuel LUCKEY Both Joseph McCREERY SR. and Samuel LUCKEY lived in Fulton County, NY, at some point between, at least 1820-1830 and and ministered to Broadalbin amoung other areas in their career. In the 1820 census it lists Joseph the 2nd living in Seneca, NY In the 1830 Census for Montgomery County it lists a Rev. JOSEPH McCREERY in Johnstown, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, NY and is mentioned in the History of Montgomery/Fulton County in the town of Glen and Broadalbin. Joseph SR. probably had more children than just Joseph and possibly are the McCeerys that were still there in the 1850 census index. But by 1840 it looks as if Joseph SR. is living in Chemung County.

Joseph McCREERY JR. One of Wesley University first students. He graduated from Wesley University in Middletown, Conn. which was founded in 1831. He was probably in Monroe by 1840. Was a celebrated, excentric and well known Methodist Minister. His expulsion and that of Mr. Roberts of the Methodist Church lead to the formation of the the Free Methodist Church. After "the 5 year, much to do", Joseph was reinstated on probation to the M.E. Church, and was accepted back in Spencerport, NY 1860. After the conference and being reinstated sometime after 1862 he went west, pioneering the frontier, soon after living in the State of Illinois and California. Dec 2, 1892 11:30 p.m. Joseph McCreey, a widow, died of paralysis of the brain at the home of his son William at 364 Washburn street, Dec. 2 aged 79 years. He had left three sons and a daughter and has lived in California until 1891, Probably in San Joaquin, CA in 1870.

He married Sidney BARNES b: 15 APR 1819, New Jersey, but likely lived in the Mohawk Valley area of New York, possibly in Montgomery or Fulton County.

Children:
1. John MCCREERY b: 24 JUN 1845 Cattaraugus County, NY
2. Jane (Jennie) Elizabeth MCCREERY b: 26 OCT 1846 in Genesse Falls, Genesee Falls is a town in Wyoming County.(Livingston?)
Thomas McCreery (b.1812)Butler Co PA adopted by John Zeigler

I have a copy of the Butler Co, PA 8 April 1830 Orphan Court records stating that Thomas McCreery, son of Thomas Creery, (note surname difference) was an orphan above age 14 and prays court grant adoption of himself by John Zeigler, which was approved. So this Thomas McCreery would be born about 1816 or earlier. My missing Thomas McCreary (who might be this orphan) was born abt.1812PA per 1850 census for Wolf Creek,Mercer Co,PA where he lives with his wife Sarah (Gilmore), and kids Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Allis Pauline, Joseph, Vance. I can find only some members in 1860-not Thomas. Family story is that his McCreery ancestor at Fort Pitt PA had married a red headed Irish gal - that must have been abt 1770ish? Hope someone can help me move back on Thomas McCreary b.1812ish.
sltregell@comcast.net

New McCreary DNA Project, Includes McCreery Surname

The new McCreary surname group project at www.familytreedna.com is now up and running. Please email me if you are a male McCreary; a male whose natural father is/was a McCreary by birth; or a female McCreary descendant who knows a male McCreary who would be willing to be tested. Since the test is a Y-DNA test to determine the likelihood of a common ancestor between test participants in the DIRECT PATERNAL line, female McCrearys are not eligible.

Any variation of the surname McCreary is welcome to establish a database within the project. Some known variations include McCreery, McCrary, McRory, and McCravy. I am also very interested in talking to any McCrearys living in Ireland who would like to be tested.

The cost of testing is discounted for members of the group project, so please contact me before you order a test. The link to the project and order page is http://mailman.barnwellsc.com/mmstdod.pl?BACKGROUND=http%3a%...

My direct line is Robert McCreary, Sr. born about 1745 probably Down Co., Ireland who married Mary Fortune b. 1746. Robert purportedly came to America about 1764, settling in Kershaw District near Camden, SC, then migrating to Barnwell District about 1770, where he died about 1810-15.

Thank you,

Lynda C.
