John McCulloch b1850 Inverness-shire

Hi,
I'm trying to find more information about John McCulloch who was born about 1850 in Inverness-shire. I have details of his wife and children etc, but can't find any information further back, such as his parents and I can't find a birth record for him. I have tried searching in the Scottish 1851 census, but can't seem to find any Inverness-shire details. Can anyone help me out? Am I missing something obvious?
Many thanks.

I'm looking for a particular McCullough line. This is the information I currently have:

William R. McCullough ("Max" born abt. 1877 in Canada) married Grace Brown (b. Sept. 1880 in Indiana) July 2, 1903 in Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana.

According to the 1910 Census. Max and Grace lived in Pennsylvania. Daughter Margaret (called Peg) was born in Indiana abt. 1905. Son Robert (and I believe his name is William Robert) was born in Penn. abt. 1907.

In the 1920 Census. Max and Grace have moved to Oregon and have two additional sons. Ralph, who was born abt. 1912 in Penn. and Richard born in Oregon abt. 1913.

I know Margaret (Peg) married an Ed Bergstrom and she died in 1970 in Oregon.

According to a 1930 Census. Wm Robert lived in Redmond, Deschutes, Oregon and was married to an Isabel kathleen b. about 1910 in Colorado.

If this family is familiar to anyone please contact me through this forum or at my email address: raisy36@ameritech.net

Thanks!

Rae

Re: Thomas McCulloch b. Scotland 1811 - 1816

Here are some links that I dug up looking for my ancestors in Scotland. The McCullochs were septs of the MacDougal clan by that they fought with them and used the same tartan.
http://www.mcculloch.ca/content/view/20/
Since the name of a clan family stayed much in one area unless by marriage into another clan.... the location of MacCulloch or McCulloch was Galloway on the west side of Scotland. You Can read more from the book "History of the Galloway Families of McCulloch" by Walter Jameson McCulloch. In 1296 Thomas Mackulagh the Count Wiggetone, was Sheriff of Wiggetone by pledging to King Edward the first. James McCulloch of Cardoness built Cardoness Castle which was a McCulloch strong hold for 200 years..You'll find it near Galloway in Scotland. There was a huge feud between McCullochs, MacLellans and McCullochs and Gordons in the 1600s. Ending in the loss of the stronghold to the other families.
At least you know who your ancestors were over there. Mine died here in America before any documentation of him and he left a widow with no background yet to find.
I would follow up in Galloway after the Culloden adventure in 1746.
Good Luck on your search!

Tom,

I think I may have already sent you a message on another board. I also have a number of Y-DNA connections with GILLESPIEs (also MCWHORTERs, FERGUSONs and HENRYs). We have a Tom McCullock in our southern McCullough / McCulloch, etc research group. Are you him? If so, we've probably been through this already. What is your DNA ID? Mine is TYC4V (FTDNA).
Wayne McCullough
Sugar Land, TX

I've been aware of the Betsy Gillespie - Thomas McCulloch marriage, but my Thomas McCulloch was a first generation immigrant from northern Ireland. While he may well have had family already in the Tinkling Spring, Augusta, and Blount County areas, this is not my direct ancestor.

Since all I know about my Thomas McCulloch was that he had more than one child (his youngest son born in Washington County TN in 1797), I am looking for any group of McCullochs born around 1790-1800 in the area with the Christian names of Thomas, James, Samuel, David, Sarah, Elizabeth, Rachel. The names Benjamin, Daniel and Alexander do NOT run in my line. Thanks, Tom McCulloch

Since my original post several years ago I learned that my ancestor, Thomas McCuluck, was not related to Sarah McCulloch/Keeble. It was the fact that she got married in Lawrence County, AL, that threw me off.

I have still hit a dead end in looking for my Thomas McCulloch ancestor. All I really know is that he came over from northern Ireland as an adult around 1775-85, and settled in Washington County NC-TN by 1788. He is last listed in a Washington County TN deed dated 1807. A 1909 newspaper article states that his "youngest son," Samuel David Mc, was born in 1797 and came down the Tennessee River to settle in Lincoln County TN by 1820, and in Lawrence County AL by 1830. Our line has been there ever since. I have no idea who Samuel's elder brothers, or sisters, were.

I have no clear link to the better known Blount County McCullochs (many of which settled in northwest Alabama, west of Lawrence County), although my DNA analysis shows I have a lot of Gillespie blood in me, probably a remnant of the east Tennessee connectino.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, Mary,
In Andrew McCulloch's book, "Galloway : A Land Apart"
on page 176 he wrote :
"...Thomas Edzear (or Edgar) a native of Nithsdale, was given the lands of Kildonan in the Rhinns."
Kildonan burn is near Drummore, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire,
and Edgar's Hill. Nearby is Core Hill (perhaps known as Corghie Hill, on which stood the Kirkmaiden Church).
Edgar / Adair may have slain "Core or Currie" and
King Robert the Bruce gave him the lands.

This Edzear / Edgar family name, changed to Adair.

Would anyone know where Andrew obtained the information
"a native of Nithsdale" from - whether it was from an original charter perhaps now in the British Museum ?
Thank you.

I would like to share information with you about the McCullochs.

My original U.S. ancestor, Thomas McCuluck, came from northern Ireland around 1770-80 and moved to northeast Tennessee by 1788 when he first appears listed as a witness to a land transaction in Washington County NC (later TN). We think he is last listed in a Washington County TN deed in 1807 or a Greene county tax roll. All we know about him is that in a 1909 newspaper article his grandson said that Thomas McCulluck's youngest son was named Samuel David McCulloch (born in 1797), and he came down the Tennessee river to Lawrence County, Alabama, where he is in the 1830 census onward. Samuel named his sons named Samuel, Joseph, David, and Thomas.

I have had my dna analyzed and it contains a good bit of Gillespie dna, a remnant of my east Tennessee origins, but I haven't been able to establish a solid link with the well-known Blount County McCullochs.

My McCulloch line contains a lot of Samuels, James, Williams, and Thomas Christian names, but no Alexanders or Benjamins.

Thanks, Tom McCulloch

Hi, none of your names sound familiar. Perhaps there is a relation...something like a brother of James McCulloch or a cousin...something like that. I will look through my paperwork, and if I see those names, I will contact you again. My McCullochs are from MO. Isabella America Brown McCulloch was from West Virginia. Her father Matthew Brown was from Old Virginia (born late 1700s). I have Caton relatives, too, and there are many, many Catons I'm not related to...well, perhaps very distantly. The names Caton and McCulloch are common surnames.

I just looked over some paperwork...Capt. Robert McCulloch II was born December 2, 1781 in Albemarle Co., VA and died June 12, 1853 in Clark's Fork Township, Cooper Co., MO. His father was Robert McCulloch I and mother was Sarah Wherry. His father was Robert McCulloch of Ireland (born 1743).

Do any of these names ring a bell with you?
Marilyn

Hi, my great-grandmother was Adaline McCulloch married to Noah Lafayette Caton. Her parents were Isabella America Brown McCulloch and Joseph R. McCulloch. Besides Adaline, they had another daughter named Martha (Mattie)who married Joseph Clark, and three sons: James, Robert and Joseph.

"My" Adaline McCulloch was born prior to 1866. I don't know, off the top of my head, who George and Martha are.

Your grandmother Ada was born three years after my grandmother Blanche Caton, daughter of Adaline and Noah (mentioned above).

Hi,
Thanks for the information. I wonder if there is any connection between your line of McCullochs and mine.

Ada's father was George C. McCulloch who married Martha Stewart in 1886. Their children were: Roy, Robert, William, Sally, Ada,(my grandmother), John (who went by his middle name Tate), Dora, and Rebecca. George C. McCulloch's parents were George Washigton McCulloch and Rachel May Tate.

George Washington McCulloch was born in Tennessee and moved to Missouri sometime in the 1840s. My cousin and I beleive there might be a connection with Major Alexander McCulloch and his wife Frances Fisher LeNoir.

Hi Marilyn,

Thanks so much for taking the time to look up the information you have on your line of the McCulloch family. None of the names ring a bell at this time. But there could be a connection somewhere. As of now I have only traced my McCulloch line back to Tennesse, to 1840. If you happen to come across any information that might of help to me, please let me know. I will do the same if I find something that might connect our lines.

Thanks again.
Steve
