Dear Donna -

Did you ever get to the bottom of the Cromwell McVitty/Margaret McCurdy mystery? They're my ancestors (via son Edward) and I too am frustrated that while there's so much on the McVitty line, Margaret's origin is a complete mystery. I've been wondering if one of the immigrant James' sons (Archibald, Robert, James, Hugh) could have been Margaret's father, but folks I've talked to say it's not possible.

Sincerely
Eric Waggoner

Harriet, Harriett, Hattie? - McCurdy

I am looking for a Harriet, Harriett, or Hattie McCurdy, born between 1785-1800? In South Carolina

She was married to a John Williamson.
Her birthplace is reported as South Carolina by her son on census records

The only child I know they had is John McCurdy Williamson. John M was born in February 1819, so I'm estimating Harriet's birth year as 1785-1800

Anyone with that name in their lists?

Elizabeth McCurdy Dodson, Peach Bottom, PA

Culling thru the US Census data I finally found my Dodson ancestor, Henry, who emigrated from Ireland sometime between 1812, when he was born, & 1860 the last Census he was listed in. In this Census Henry is listed as a Farmer. He may have been here as early as 1831/32.

He married an Elizabeth McCurdy b. abt 1815, who from all information I can find was 1st generation Irish-American, both her parents having been born in Ireland. Elizabeth's & Henry's children were: Lorenzo J. b. 1844, James A. b. 1846, William H. b. 1854 & Rudolphus Delmar Dodson, b. abt 1856. I think Elizabeth's parents were a W.H. McCurdy & a female Hepburn, but am not sure. I am descended from Lorenzo who was my ggf & a conductor on the Ma & Pa Railroad (Maryland & Pennsylvania RR-that ran from Baltimore to York, PA) for a time in the late 1800's.

Interesting piece of information is that Rudoiphus, also known as Delamar Dodson in some Census & family info, became a fairly prominent Dentist in the York, PA area before moving west to Ohio. From an account I read in a Pennsylvania archive, Rudolphus is supposed to have studied under a Dr. W. McCurdy, a dental surgeon in/near York or Philadelphia, PA. But I don't think this is the same Dr. McCurdy who served in the 87th PA Infintry during the Civil War who was later imprisoned by the Confederates & actually went AWAL from the Union forces after he was released.

I am at a loss as to WHO Elizabeth McCurdy's parents were & whether she had any siblings. I am also curious to find out if the Dr. McCurdy that Delamar Dodson studied under was, perhaps, his grandfather or maybe an uncle or mother's cousin. Also, since this branch of my father's line were all Protestants, I suspect they emigrated from N. Ireland, perhaps Derry, as I don't seem to have any Catholic Irish ancestors who came over during the Great Famine years.

Do any McCurdy researchers recognize this info? Would love to correspond to any who might help me locate her parents & siblings & siblings descendents.

Does anyone know if there were children of this couple?
Margaret Ewell, dau. of Charles E. Ewell and his 2nd wife Julia W. Champion. I find that Franklin W. McCurdy married Margaret 1934, Phila. PA.
Franklin W. McCurdy; Born: 18 Jul 1908 and Died: 12 Nov 1998 Rockville, Montgomery Co., Maryland.
Margaret Ewell Born: 7 May 1911 and Died: 13 Oct 2003
Rockville, Montgomery Co., Maryland.

I am most interested in Margaret's ½ brother Charles Howard Ewell and his wife Mildred Cook. And perhaps if there were children or Franklin McCurdy, they might have a little bit of data to share with me. Anything would help.
Thanks..... Marysue

I am looking for information on who Rachel Briggs husband was and possibly what her maiden name was. Her married name is Briggs. She was shown as divorced in a 1900 or 1910? census living in Weymouth, MA with Rachel Clapp. Does anyone have any information on whether Delight and Stephen Claap had a daughter Rachel who married a Briggs? It is possible that Rachel Briggs is related to the Rachel Clapp she is living with. I know it is a long shot but, that is all the information I have.

Hi Kathleen,

You said you had doubts about John's parents being Alexander and Matilda/Martha McCahan but John's death in 1874 names these two as the parents.

One of John and Mary's children, John, was born in 1855 in Dunbarton. Records for this year in Scotland have a great deal more information so it's fairly positive that the couple were married in 1841 in Ballycastle.

John's sister, Bridget, died in Greenock in 1907. The parents are named with the identical spelling in Scotland but not exactly as the Irish records for the same parents.

Peter and Patrick were interchangeable so your Trainor line is correct too.

I have, I think, three children born to Peter and Mary (one possibly before the marriage) before they moved to PA., adding Mary, Peter, John and Hugh, then your Margaret.

Regards,

Andy

I got my intitial information from H. Percy Chandler's "Antestral McCurdy's" He went on to write a more accurate genealogy of the McCurdy Families in his McCurdy's of Nova Scotia from which I am directly descended.

You can join the McCurdy Family association if you wish, just write me directly and I will send you the information. Also we have taken the McCurdy Tartan under our auspices. this is Tartan Number 1092 (TS 1092) and is found on the Tartan serch web pages.

We are a sept (sub group) of the Stuart of Bute Clan and can wear that tartan as well as our own. I can send you a picture of each of the tatans if you wish. We can also join the Clans Stewart Association of America and I can help you there as well.

I stem from at least one of the Alexanders so you can see how important this information is to me.

Also, Have you tried the DNA research program? We have a long list of names in the Family Tree DNA McCurdy and Clan Stewart DNA programs. I am really trying to have those in Northern Ireland and on the Isle of Bute to join in on our DNA research to see where the family tie ins are located and match them with individual genealogy GEDCOM files.

I recently returned home from a trip to Philadelphia and did a search on the name Colgan. The wife of William Quigg, was first married to a Robert Colgan and I came back with an administration for his estate and obituary notices. Robert died in 1865 and Hugh Colgan did an inventory of his estate in Philadelphia, but he was buried in Port Kennedy near the Valley Forge national park in Pennslyvania.

Your posting intrigued me because I saw Ballintoy. My ancestor William Quigg and his 2 sibling Andrew Quigg and Mary (Quigg) Haney also have connections to Ballintoy. The Port Kennedy Presbyterian church burial grounds where Mary Haney and Robert Colgan are buried has a McClain from Ballintoy, and several other people buried there who list Antrim as their place of origin. I'm not sure if I saw a McCurdy there, but I think I did as I was walking the grounds. Do any of your McCurdys have a connection to this part of Pennsylvania?

I beleive that this Mary McCurdy is the daughter of a Robert McCurdy who left Donegal, Ireland in about the 1841- she would therefore be a sister to Dr John McCurdy of Younstwon, Ohio, whose letters were quoted in the Salisbury history of the McCurdy family, poublished in 1892!
If you might be interested in learning more of this possible connection, please contact me directly!
Robert's wife was maiden name of Henry, and he, Robert, died in about 1865

Shane McCurdy
Co. Armagh
Northern Ireland

I am also a descendant of Robert McCurdy b. 1766 Ireland and Grace Kier. I have other information on their descendants, but none on their origins. Feel free to write to me directly at jefferiksen@comcast.net, and I will be happy to share what I know. I hesitate to post any more than I have since I have not found any of my Dad's primary sources in his papers. Some day.

My Father found the line from Robert down to my Mother, as follows:

Robert b. 1766
John b. 1803
John W.C. b. 1843
John Preston b. 1982
D(oris) Muriel b. 1911
Doris Irene (my mother) b. 1931
K Jeffrey Eriksen (me) b. 1953
Adam K. Eriksen (my son) b. 1985

I would be very interested in your lineage. Another descendant of Robert's also looks at this list. I will let her respond to you herself if she chooses.

OK, I see that Virginia already responded. We should all compare notes and per the request of Terry Craft put our best information out for others to use.
James Harry McCurdy married to Susan M. Lynn

Hello,

I am looking for any information on James Harry McCurdy born in 1849 who married Susan M. Lynn born in 1849. I am also trying to find any Native American lineage associated with this line of the McCurdy's. In records that I have found it showed they lived in the Choctaw Nation, Township 9, Indian Territory E.D. 76 Roll;T623_1850. James and Susan had several children and the child who is apart of my husband's line is Susan- Susanna McCurdy born August 29th 1883 in Arkansas. If anyone has any information or can help me out I would greatly appreciate it! aimlmcgrml@msn.com

Hi Virginia and Jeff: I am a descendant of Robert McCurdy who was John's younger brother. Robert was 8 years younger than John. He was born in 1811 and died in 1858. My great-grandmother Rescie Smith who I knew as a boy died in 1977. Her grandfather was Robert K. McCurdy and your John McCurdy would have been her great-uncle I suppose. John died 20 years before Rescie was born, so she would have never known him. It is certainly a pleasure to meet both of you. I think it would be safe to say that the majority of the 7th generation descendants of Robert are still in the western part of PA. People never seem to leave here. May I ask what part of the country are you two from? I would most certainly be interested in future communication and would be willing to share any info that I have. My father is still living and he remembers and knows more of the McCurdys than I do.

John Russell McCurdy

Hello all. I am searching for any info anyone may have on a John Russell McCurdy, married in the late 1940's - early 1950's to Eleanor Fletcher. They had 3 children, John Russell Jr. , Eleanor P., and Laura. John Jr. and Eleanor were adopted at (approx ages) 9 & 11 by Harold and Martha Euler.
John (sr.) was stationed at Camp Lejeune in the 1950's.
John Sr. and Eleanor may have been married in Pennsylvania, or North Carolina.
This is not a search for living relatives.... just a genealogy search for my father in law who is interested in his family tree.
I will add more info as I obtain it, to make the search easier. We appreciate your help!
Stephanie Euler

I have quite a bit of info on this family and recently found out that Alexander McCurdy's parents were, as I'd long suspected, Brian Oge McCurdy (b. abt 1760 Cushendall died 1820) and Nancy McLaughlin. Brian Oge's parents were Bryan McCurdy (b. abt 1741 Cushendall) and Mary (McCurdy) McCurdy of Rathlin Island.

All these lines are now available at rathlin-island.info and I would be delighted if you could fill in any gaps.

Regards,

Andy

Hi Steve, Nice to hear from you. I live in MN near St. Paul but grew up in Westmoreland Co., PA. I am one generation older than you and Jeff. I met Florence Taylor which I believe was related to you. I don't know if she is still alive or not but she lived in Indiana, PA. I have been up in Young Township at least three times. There is another cousin named Ralph Volpe who is also related thru Mary McCurdy Stuchell (John and Robert's sister). We need to include all of us on an e-mail and maybe we can gain more information. Virginia
