Here is the remainder of the info.

George was born December 27, 1808 in Maury Co., TN. In February 1829, the family moved to Bond Co., Ill., when he was 21 years old. He helped on his father's Bond Co, ILL farm until the Black Hawk War came along in 1832. He is listed as a veteran of the Illinois Black Hawk War Veterans. He came from Bond County and was in
the second regiment and third Brigade serving under Capt. Thomas Stout.

I received info from the Office Of The Secretary of State for Illinois State Archives.He was on active duty about 2 months, here is the info I have:

This company organized May 5, 1832, Second Regiment, Third Brigade of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers.
In complyance with the govenors Proclamation dated May the 5th, this company took up the line of march for Fort Wilburn
with Ten days provisions on the 8th of June 1832 arriving there June 18. Mustered into the Service the 19th of June.
from which time have drawn rations in part from the Qr Master General of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers.

Company has drawn eight days Travling Rations for their Subsistance to their respective homes a
distance of two hundred and fifty miles. I certify on honor, that I have carefully examined this muster roll and
that I have this 16th day of August 1832, mustered out of the service of the United States, the above mentioned Company
of the 2nd Reg't. 3rd Brogade by order of Brig Genl Atkinson.

1. Started marching for Fort Wilburn on June 8, 1832 arrived June 18, 1832, Mustered into
Service June 19, 1832.
2. Mustered out August 16, 1832

He bought his first 80 acres from his father-in-law on October 10, 1840 I Vandalia County
and 14 years later he purchased 40 more acres on Setp. 15, 1854. I have a copy of the deed of both purchases.

1850 Census of Fayette Co,. IL George W McCurley with the children attached to him and Elizabeth Buckmaster.

George and Jonas finally found their way to Texas and settled at the forks of Big Elm Creek
and Hickory Creek near present day Hickory Creek Texas. The McCurley homesteads evolved
into a small settlement named McCurley Prairie. The small community consisted of a church,
a cemetery, McCurley School, and several private homes. This site is now covered by Lake Lewisville.

No one knew the difference, George and Eliza were not going to tell so they were accepted
as man and wife in Texas. It's a wonder one of the children didn't let it slip. I bet they had been
lectured a few times on keeping their mouth shut, because they were big enoug to know what was
gong on. Kids always know more than your thing they do.

A real marriage was impossible as Daniel Denton refused to allow a divorce. George died
in 1857 and was buried in Dickson Cemetery.

The children would have been from 9 to 21 years of age at this time. My
Ggrandfather, F. B. McCurley, would have been 19 years old.

Daniel Denton filed for divorce in February 1957, naming G. W. McCurley
in the suit, saying his wife had lived with him for some years and shared
his bed. Daniel divorced Eliza. She later married a man named Brown. She
and George had no children.

McCurley Cemetery in McCurley Prairie was moved next to
Old Hall Cemtery. This is a very large, old cemetery that is still
active and is located not far from Lewisville, Texas. In front of the
cemetery the title is "McCurly Cemetery" and the reason for this is that
some of the graves were moved from McCurly Prairie to this location.
There is also a Historical Marker about McCurley Prairie, etc.

More information on McCurley Cemetery is in the notes for F. B. McCurley,
my ggrandfather and son of George W McCurley.

According to his son George C McCurley, when Geroge W McCurley died he left 106 2/3 acres of land to six of his children. The six children were Francis B, A. (Abraham?),
Nancy, George C., Margaret A. Perry, (wonder what happened to Margaret.s first husband, James Ray) and Harriet R Hyatt.

I am from the same line, Abraham Sr, Abraham Jr. and George W.but I have never been able to prove who is the father of
Abraham SR. and where he was born.

I have a story about George W that most people don't know.
When I first started searching the McCurleys and had worked my way into ILL, a lady wrote me and said she had been hired to research the McCurleys by a Lady from Texas and she still had all her notes and would I like to have them.
This was like Gold from Heaven at this time. She sent them
to me and had this story enclosed.

George and Elizabeth had 7 children between 1836 and 1848. Elizabeth diedon March 24, 1850 leaving George with 7 children between the ages of 2 and 14.

Margaret was the oldest so most of the time she was the one who had to take care of all the small ones plus cook, wash, and clean.He continued to live on the farm near his first wife's family. but then all hell was about to break loose in Fayette County.

About 1853, George outraged Fayette County society when his dead wife's cousin, Eliza Buckmaster, moved in with him. While public outrage was severe, it was relatively mild compared to that of Eliza's husband,Daniel Denton. The furor over the illicit affair was so great that a new
start was imparative. George packed Eliza and HIS CHILDREN, ages 5 to 17 (My Ggrandfather would have been 13) into a wagon and moved to Denton
County Texas. They were accompanied by the family of his brother Jonas.

Ironic that they moved to DENTON county considering that was the name of Eliza's husband.

Daughter Margaret did not come to Denton. She was already married to Silas Perry.

I don't know how much can be put in at one time, I may
already be over the limit. I will send you some more info
in another post.You may already know all of it.

This is Bobby Howard I am not sure if you are talking to me
but I will answer. I also have Nancy married to Abraham Jr.

I have thr Marriage Records of Barren County, Kentucky
1799-1849 and it says McEarly,Abraham to Nancy Brown June 18,
1804. I have Wineford married to Abraham Sr.

I know it is spelled McEarly but McCurley has been spelled
a lot of ways.

I have a lot of info on the McCurleys and I have probably
talked to you some time in the past.

What I have never been able to PROVE who is the father of Abraham Sr. What is your line from George W McCurley and do you know where George W is buried.

Thank you, Juli, two very helpful links; however, I could not find any reference to a Rose McCurley and a lady named Carol Demers kindly checked the non Catholic McCurley marriages, there were 33 in total in Illinois. On the first website you mention, I did find an Alice McMauley, married in Cook County to Lynden R Potter in 1914. Her age at marriage was an accurate fit for my great aunt, but the marriage was in the Baptist Chapel; not that this in itself would rule it out, but makes it more unlikely. As you suggest, I shall now check the later census returns for Alice Potter to see if it it throws up any clues.

I've been following this link.
I'm still trying to trace two maternal great aunts,
Rose & Alice McCurley, who arrived in Chicago, Illinois via Pennsylvania, during the early 1890s. The passenger lists show Alice as being 14 years and nine months in 1893; Rose
was aged 20 when she arrived in 1892. The girls were sisters, sailed from Liverpool, UK, and had lived in England for some years, but were born in County
Derry, Ireland (now Northern Ireland). They were Catholic and they did marry, does anyone have any subsequent information on the two sisters? I'd appreciate any help I can get on this one.

Peggy, Ezekiel McCurley was a son of Joseph McCurley/ Rebecca Reed. Whether or not Joseph had an additional name of James that he didn't use, I don't know. However, Mary "Polly" Elizabeth McCurley was their daughter, and sister to Ezekiel. Mary "Polly" Elizabeth McCurley married Robert Fanning. It will help you to look at Juli Claussen's material posted on line.

Mary Elizabeth McCurley married Robert Fanning. She was the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Reed) McCurley. I have seen one document in which a James Joseph McCurley appears who may have been our Joseph, but I am not certain. I do know that in the several documents I am certain of, he is referred to as Joseph McCurley. Her parents are James McCurley/Rebbeca Reed. I do not have much info. on the McCurley side. I do know the McCurleys from Morgan County where I am from.

My 2nd great grandmother was Sarah Ann McCurley, sister of Ezekiel McCurley. Her parents were Joseph McCurley and Rebecca Reed. Sarah Ann married John Brown and they had my great-grandmother Martha Ann Brown, born in Morgan Co IL, as well as about 10 other children. The Fannings, Browns, Criswells and McCurleys were very intermarried so if you find one you'll usually find another living close by.

You have to be careful when researching her, because Ezekiel named a daughter Mary Elizabeth, and Ezekiel had two granddaughters named Mary E. McCurley.

Joseph Reed McCurley SON of James Joseph McCurley&Rebecca Reed married Elizabeth Lock on 3-27-1830 Morgan Co., IL. I have no birth, death dates for Joseph Reed McCurley or Elizabeth Lock. Nor do I have any childrens names.

Hi Kathy, I realize this is a very old posting, but I think that we are related. My grandmaother was Hervie Belle McCurley Campbell-Huffman. Eldest daughter of James William and Mandy Elizabeth(Lizzy) Pringle. They had 11 children. I have traced family back to Abraham McCurley born in Antrim Ireland. I have a picture that I received of James and Mandy with a few of the eleven children born at the time and my grandmother at age 12. I received the picture from a Great Uncle either Guy ot Toy sorry its been a while.at the Nava Family Reunion in Vernon Texas. Rose and Alice McCurley

Philadelphia Passenger Lists for 1800-1945 shows that Alice McCurley, aged 14 and nine months arrived in Philadelphiaon 13 August 1893. Her final destination was given as Chicago, Illinois. Her sponsor was her sister, Rose, who had also bought her ticket. Both Rose and Alice were my great aunts; Rose, who was seven years older than Alice, had presumably been in Chicago for some time previously.

Does anyone have any subsequent information concerning these sisters? I do have information regarding their English and Irish origins.

Sherrill, my 3 g-grandfather, Joseph McCURLEY/McKERLEY/McCEARLEY was born abt 1800 in Tenn; married and started a family there. Between 1830 and 1834 he and his family migrated to Wilkinson Co, Miss, where the family remained for several generations. Can you share any additional info about the four brothers from Tenn in your husband's McCURLEY line? Maybe Joseph is one of the two who went to Miss.

I think the McCurleys & McKerleys are part of my MCKELLY & MCKELLEYs. I have even found my grandfathers marriage license with a MCKEARLEY spelling.The marriage as in Sumner county TN, which isnt far from Barren co KY.Before going to Tn the McKelleys lived in Franklin co Alabama, I found a McKelley creek in Franklin co Al, but cannot find a reference anywhere on the internet for the people ith that name, so I have to guess their name was spelled differently in AL census, or maybe they were only there for a short time, missing a census entirely.I have no proof but family told me they did live in Ky at one time.My McKelleys are in the 1870 & 80 Sumner county Tn census,around 1900 they are in Nashville Tn. Davidson county.Grandfather & great gf both named James Calvin McKelley.Connected names-Bazellia Thomasson (male) (owned land in Fr.co Al, found in Al land records).Sutton-(Sumner co TN) ,Edwards-Sumner co Tn.My uncle George McKelley,(deceased) had a ORR connection, it was his wifes maiden name or his daughter married a Orr.Srry this is so long, seems there is no stopping place, if anything is of interest let me know.

Thanks for the message. This sounds promising. I have found a bit more information since I posted this message. Henry's wife was names Elizabeth. Their children were: Thomas, Irene, Charles, Robert T., Maud, and Mary. According to his pension card, he died November 6, 1913. A place isn't listed but as I said on my message I believe he was living in Detroit, or the area. He is also listed as Henry C. McCurley. His occupation was an engineer. I am thinking a railroad engineer. I would be interested to see if any of this onformation fits with your family.

Hi Jayne I realize this is a very old posting but I would love to talk to you via email about the McCurley side of the family My mother was the daughter of James Willian McCurley and Mandy Elizabeth Pringle she married Sam E. Campbell . My mother was Alta Mae Campbell her parents and grandparents were living in Pauls Valley Ok at the time of her birth. My grandfather Sam Campbell was killed in a vehicle accident abt 1934. My mother had no memory of her father as my grandmother moved to Phoenix Arizona shortly after his death. I think we may have a family connection. I know I still have McCurley relatives in the Vernon and Wichita Falls area in Texas. If by chance you see this I think we could share info.

Patrick’s oldest son Felix kept the name McCurley but all others changed and used Curley. Seems Patrick had property in Pa. and Md. to keep both he had to maintain different names. This was during all the mess of the Mason/Dixon lines which were confusing as some wanted walked off paces and others wanted line of site and yet others who wanted it surveyed.

My maternal grandfather was Gene McCurley and his great-grandfather was Henry McCurley. His wife was Elizabeth Williams. I'll see what I can discover about his death and burial. I'm new to ancestry.com.
