Trying to track my mother's family and need info on Mcdorman and Collet/collat/collette families prior to 1860. I find them living in Jefferson and Henry counties in Iowa in 1860 census. Believe Mcdormans came from Rockingham county, VA while Collet apparently came from "French Canada". I have no idea what made up french canada.

Hi, if anyone's still on here. My name is Jen Sawmiller, and my grandma is Janet McDorman. Her dad was Russell E. McDorman from Spencerville, Ohio and I know they have family from Virginia. My family has told me that David McDorman fought in the Revolutionary War at Yorktown, and I was wondering if anyone has any information on that. Also, if anyone knows how Russell McDorman was descended from David, I would like to know that as well. Thanks!

I'll send the copy of the obit in another mailing. I don't have access to it at this moment. Any other questions/comments may be sent to floyd247@netzero.com. I am activily in contact with some of her descendants - specifically - the descendants of the 2 daughters that moved from VA to ND and hope to get some more details in the coming weeks. Not really sure if they have any direct information on the McDorman line.

The [Harrisonburg, VA] Daily News-Record, Wednesday 30 August 1916, p. 4, col. 4

Note that her obituary, doubtless penned by son L.C.
Re: McDorman origins

I have Michael McDorman, twice in my database. One (wife Elizabeth) is listed as brother to Risdon of Greene Co. OH and later of Darke Co. Oh. Then there was Risdon's son, Michael, who was reared in Darke Co.

Michael the brother died in 1833 (Elizabeth also of colera) in Miami Co. OH and I have the estate papers for him and the sale papers from the Miami Co. historical society. He had a minor daughter, Eleanor who was quiet a handful and had a juvie record with Montgomery Co. court. John the son is also assigned a guardian but the trail of espenditures are not as lengthy as for Elenor. He may have been older and not under the thumb of the guadian as long. Ages do not seem to be given. I am trying to tie Eleanor to me. My g. grandmother was Eleanor Jane McDorman Downey McIntosh born about 1814 in Ohio and died after the 1880 Census of MO., somewhere in MO, Kansas or Oaklahoma. She lived in Beavercreek Twp, Greene Co. in Sept. 1841 when she married James Downey as a second wife. He died in 1847 and she remarried in 1850 Wm. McIntosh, a neighbor, and remained on the Downey property until Wm died in 1870. Ellen Jane and son Harvey and family, daughter Rebecca Downey Morgan and husband Samuel then left and reappear in MO on the 1880 Census, farming on adjoining farms. I have tracked the children and families but Eleanor disappears after this Census.

I am a descendant of John Keck and Barbara Mishler Keck. Their son, Archibald Keck and Ruth Truax had a daughter, Mary Keck. I can't find for sure as yet, but it looks like she married Risden McDorman. He married in 1867 in Dunn Cty, WI, but I haven't found for sure who he married as yet. I am going to Menomonie, Dunn Cty, soon and hope to look up that marriage record. If you would like to correspond further, my email address is egroth@charter.net. You are probably following the McDormans and I am doing the Kecks but will be happy to share. Liz

We are also looking for McDormans we are down the line to Joseph which married Florine. Which we believe are like 6 generations?? Richard Thayer McDorman is one of Joseph and Florine's children but most say there are only three children from this marriage 1. Leonard 2. Carol 3. Richard 4. Marilyn. There are also pictures we would like to be able to see if there is any way possible that you know who and how to link to these.

Thanks Rick (Dick) and Char :-)

Bruce,
WOW! Yes, this is exactly what I've been looking for. This is a huge help. Thank you so much. I had no idea where to look.

I only find one problem. I have Ann appearing on the 1850, 1860 & 1870 Williamsport, Lycoming Co, PA census with Elias. On Elias Hoffman's obit dated May 6,1879 it mentions he leaves a 72yr old wife. However, you mention the year of death (1859) is from an unsourced family researcher, so it is still possibly the same Ann.

Does your information have her married to Elias Hoffman? Do you have children listed for her?

Do you have anything more on George? Wife? Children?

Would you be willing to share your tree data/sources with me? I would be more than happy to do the same for you. You can e-mail me at cl_harris@sbcglobal.net

Thanks again.
Candace

Hello Candace –
I too have been stuck at the point as well mainly with her parents. I know much more about her brother George. Your info is great however . . . thank you!

However, the following is what I have:

Unsourced from a previous family researcher researching in the 1980s:
Ann McDorman -
B: 28 April 1805. D: 1859. Auburn, DeKalb, Indiana
Husband was the same.
Other McDormans did end up in Indiana and especially Ohio, so the death place may be possible.
It is also unsourced that George was her brother, however with your information of her middle name (albeit spelled differently), it makes sense.

Parents
William McDorman. B: Scotland. Martha Kaness. B: Ireland.
Note: NOT William Henry McDorman born in 1808.

Brother
George McDorman. B: 21 January 1808. D: 28 August 1848.
Buried in Defiance, Ohio (Not sure if is the county or near the town).

Her parents and brother I have sourced, outside of public member trees etc., with family Bible records.

I hope this helps!

Bruce
Hello fellow clansmen, I am Slate McDorman, 32, great grandson of George Zadock McDorman. We live in Birmingham and to my knowledge are the only McDorman's in Alabama. I have heard stories that we have great grandfather who rode with Captain David Morgan, Morgans Raiders, during the civil war. He later became a minister and moved from GA to somewhere in the midwest. If I sound related to you please drop me a line.

Slate

Kevin,

I manage burial records for Rosedale Cemetery which is located in Gladewater, Gregg Co., TX. I have three McDorman individuals buried in the old section of the cemetery with markers, i.e., Fred McDorman, 1892-1978; John W. McDorman, 1860-1942; and Leslie McDorman, 1889-1960. Also buried in the McDorman plot is Elizabeth M. Payne, 1896-1989 and Lester Bert Payne, 1880-1856. The Paynes used to have funeral home markers, but they have deteriorated with the years. To my knowledge, there are no known relatives still in the Gladewater area. ew

John Lambert married Rachel Mcdorman in Ohio in 1828. In 1850 they are still in ohio and have a daughter, Harriet who married Reuben Elliott. On the 1850 census Harriet has a George Glaze listed with her and Reuben and he is 6mo. old. By 1860 he is listed in John and Rachels household and remains there till he marries Mary Jane Young (Daughter of Madison Young) in 1879. Does anyone know how George came to be in these households? His Death certificate states no father and a Sara Lambert for his mother. However Sara can not be found or connected with John and Rachel. I would appreciate ANY help. Thank you.

My Grandmother, Avis McDorman, was the daughter of Levi Sherman McDorman and Olive Ella Bishop. She was born in Trego, WI abt 1910, and had 3 older brothers, Donald, Lauren, and Virgil. She married my Grandfather, Franz Josef Haefliger, and later had 4 daughters, Mary Lee, Vivienne, Carolyn (My Mother), and Francis.
RISDON b in 1784 died 8/19/1842 in Versailles, Darke County, Ohio. Elizabeth died 10/11/1846.

I have probate records of minor children of Risdon's brother. I am trying to prove the daughter Eleanor Jane McDorman is my g..grandmother. The family came to Ohio to Greene Co. and then moved to Miami Co. and then when his brother died, Risdon went to Darke. So...I am interested in the North Carolina information as I have the Ohio onward "stuff". That is what I meant about visiting N.C. Do you have any information about the family before they migrated to Ohio? LindaSS

I am a descendant of Thomas Tuning who was married to Sarah Tuning. Thomas is the son of Joseph Tuning. Thomas Tuning and Sarah Tuning a buried in Pickens West Virginia. Over the years there has been misspellings of the name. Many in the family spell their name Tunning and others spell their name Tuning. My father was Denver Tunning who was the son of Burt Tuning one of Thomas Tuning’s sons. He had several other sons George, Arthur, Walter, Felix, Ollie. Sarah and Thomas were born in Nelson county and later moved to Bath County Virginia. At some point in their lives they moved to Florence, a little village area outside of Pickens West Virginia. Florence does not exist any longer. Joseph was born in Albemarle County Virginia. My father always said that a school teacher caused the misspelling of the name.

Sarah Tuning (married to McDorman) and Thomas Tuning were cousins. Thomas's father Joseph was a brother to John who was Sarahs father. In the 1850 census they lived next door in Bath County Virginia. Sorry I didn't answer this sooner but did not know there was a query or I would have been here sooner.. Phyllis

Hi Pamela,
Thank you so much for responding to my post.

I have had this brick wall with my 2nd gr-grandmother, Ann McDorman, b abt 1808 in PA, d. 08 May 1880 in PA. On 28 Mar 1829 in PA, Ann married Elias Hoffman/Huffman, b 1809 in Brier Creek Twp, Northumberland Co, PA and d. 1879 in Williamsport, Lycoming Co, PA.

The newspaper marriage announcement has her maiden name as McDorman. However, another researchers old family bible and has her maiden name as Kneiss.

When I saw Tim's posting I noticed the McDorman/Kaness names:
William McDorman, b Scotland, d; Lycoming Co PA. Married-
Martha Kaness, b. Scotland, d. Ohio. He also mentions they had a son George b.1808 in PA.

I'm wondering if George may be Ann's brother. I thought that maybe Ann's middle name may be Kneiss/Kaness after her mother?????

Maybe a long shot but I'm hoping. You can e-mail me directly if you'd like. Thanks again Pamela.
Candace
cbfamily@sbcglobal.net

I thought that perhaps Ann had received her moms maiden name as her middle name. In addition, she named one of her sons William.
Re: Sarah E. MCDORMAN ~ Henry MCDORMAN ~ Rockingham, VA

The following information was found in my Grandma Leone BUBECK nee DAVISON's Bible. I have transcribed the info verbatim from her BIBLE page, even though the spellings of some of the family's names I am sure are incorrect:

"Johnie McDORMAN was born December 30th 1852

Algerney MCDORMAN was born June 6, 1856

Juitt McDORMAN was born August of 1858

Newton McDORMAN born born Decem 25, 1848

Duglous MCDORMAN born August 27th 1853

Mrs. Margaret J. WOOD was born June 7, 1845"

I noticed different spellings in other documents, I have. Johnie was spelled Johnnie, Juitt spelled his name Jewett, Duglous spelled his name Douglas.

Attached are photos of Sara A. REEVES, who was the second wife of my ggg-grandfather, Henry MCDORMAN from Rockingham, VA. (These photos were shared with me by Jo MCDORMAN). I believe these children listed are Sarah Jane's step-children. Evelina DETAMORE was my GGG-grandmother who was married to Henry McDORMAN and I believe these children were born to them.

This McDORMAN line is my g-grand mother Pearl MCDORMAN 's siblings. Pearl CARD nee MCDORMAN was married several times and her last husband was William CARD who is nowhere to be found anywhere; but, his name is on her headstone. I have heard William CARD was originally from MICHIGAN. Pearl (Perl) was born in Dec 30, 1884 in Lima, OH and died 16 August 1952 at age 67 in Dayton, Montgomery County, OH and buried at the WILLOWVIEW Cemetery in Dayton, OH. I have her death certificate and her parents were listed as Douglas McDORMAN and Matilda GILLISPIE. She died of a coronary heart disease, cerebral hemorrhage and the last disease looks to be spelled divtictus (?).

I have a DAVISON ~ MCDORMAN website I can invite you to see also, if you will please e-mail me at wellsp2000@yahoo.com with McDORMAN listed in the subject of the e-mail. Hope this helps!

Thanks and happy hunting,

Pamela WELLS nee ROBERSON
Trinity, FL

Must have missed this post. My Eleanor Jane McDorman Downey McIntosh was born in Ohio, but lists SC as parents home, but that could be a mistake or the state line could change? I still have not found her past 1880 in MO when she was 71.

I need the date and place of marriage for Henry and Evalina. Also their correct dates of birth. There's a huge difference in their ages between the 1860 and 1870 census reports.
I'm related through Sarah E. McDorman.
Would it be possible that you might know anything about the parents of John McDorman (1760-1817) John was born in VA and died in Ohio. His descendents (my relations) are:

James McDorman 1800-1894 Ohio
William Henry McDorman 1808-1868 Missouri
James William McDorman 1849-1921 Blackwell, TX James William was brother to Lindsay Houston.
Ida McDorman 1877-1949 married James Newton Montgomery, Sr. - Ida was my grandmother and lived in Blackwell. Her son Lindsay Houston Montgomery is my uncle.
