I am looking for any links to William McDowell, born around 1854 in Ballymena area of County antrim, northern ireland. I have a est guess on his parents being one Thomas McDowell and Margaret Allan. William married a Mary Ann Doey ( multi spellings of this surname seen)in 1880/1 in Ahoghill, co antrim, n. ireland. They had several children but the one i would like to know about is :
William ... married twice, children from first marriage went to USA, their names being Nellie, Margaret and Sammy.
I think Sammy may have a son called Craig?

this is absolutely fantastic. I've been to Shawville Quebec and when graveyard hunting this past summer. What did you find in Ireland, that was going to be my next trip. I have to say this genealogy is very consuming. Its been 18 years of vacations so far. There is so much information out there and so many disputes as to where William was from. Rather than writing a historial book, every thought of writing a historial fiction book, have William and his ghost narrate the family story. I"ve been reading Philippa Gregory's book the "White Queen" and its brillant. Kids will pick it up and read it.

Hi. All I have is what I found on Ancestry, S.S. Death index, 1920 census and a marriage license. No where have I been able to find any parents or siblings. I'm not even sure if he was born in Tennessee or Misouri. I do know he at one time worked at the National Zoo in D.C., but have had no luck contacting them, and he supposedly rode pony express as a teen.
He has been the biggest mystery in my research so far. Anything you might have would be welcomed.
BTW, are you connected? He was my grandfather.
Thankyou,
Barbara

William H. McDowell, the father of Joseph Jefferson McDowell was born in 1865. My great grandfather was born in 1864. I have seen William H. in other trees as William Henry. John is buried in an old family cemetery with his wife, Tennessee Talley. Joseph is buried in an old cemetery in Red Bank near Chattanooga and Larkin is buried in a church cemetery in Brainerd with his wife. I have no obituaries for any. I have seen William H. McDowell's obit. on here but it doesn't list any brothers or sisters just children. I'm wondering if William could be my John's brother that went by Bill. I'm wondering if the library keeps old obituaries.

Brothers Robert and Charles McDowell from Longford, IR to NY

Hi,

Has anyone on this board heard of these brothers and their families? Robert b. 1812 in Longford came to NY in 1841. He marries Eliza Bierne/Byrne about 1851 (I believe after she finished an indentureship.) They have their first child, Robert, in 1852 in Brooklyn, NY. Their second child, Eliza J. was born in Michigan about 1853. She was determined to have a mental deficiency. The final child is Ellen McDowell born in 1859 in Brooklyn, NY.

Robert, the son, moved to Denver, CO and married Sarah "Sadie" Freeman who was born in VA in 1866 but moved to Brooklyn, NY. After her marriage, she inherited a house from her Freeman relative in Brooklyn, NY. The family briefly lived in NY and then went back to Denver.

Brother Charles came over in 1861 and I think it was to sign for his brother's account at the Emigrant Savings Bank in Brooklyn. Charles' family includes his wife,Catherina Soden and several sons and daughters--all born in Ireland. Charles' children are John (1844), Elizabeth (1846), Janie (1853), Annie (1856), Robert (1868) and Charles (1861).

The parents of Robert and John are John McDowell and Ellen Cody per the Emigrant Savings Bank Records.

Do any of these names ring a bell? Surely John's children must have married in the US.

All suggesions/assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Barbara Curtis

Re: Mary H. McDowell and Stephen Wayne Crutcher

Barbara:

My research into the McDowells of Hardin County shows the father of your Mary H. McDowell is one of two John McDowells. This John McDowell arrived in Hardin County around 1802 and died ca. 1830/1832.

This John McDowell is listed in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 censuses and 1802-1829 tax lists in Hardin County. It looks like he also had children named John and James. His widow, Mary McDowell, was listed as the head of household in the 1833 and 1834 tax lists.

It's been a while since I've looked at the marriage records in Hardin County, but I believe Mary McDowell remarried ca. 1834/1835.

You need to make sure you don't confuse this John McDowell with the OTHER John McDowell, who was my 4th great grandfather. He arrived in Hardin County ca. 1811 and died in 1845.

Your John McDowell owned many hundreds of acres of land and a number of slaves. Mine did not. Both were married to women named Mary, but my John McDowell's wife was Mary Brown, daughter of Frederick Brown and Mary Haley.

I don't know if there's any relation between the two John McDowells or not. It's possible they're cousins, but it's just as possible they're unrelated. I never realized how many John McDowell's I would run into in the 1700s and early 1800s.

Hope this helps.

Jacqueline

Need help researching parents of Mary H. McDowell. She was born in 1816 in KY and married Stephen Wayne Crutcher 3 Sept 1833 at age 17. I know that her marriage bond was signed by her mother, also named Mary, possibly a widow. I have been unable to find any other information. I know she died at age 33 in Hardin County Kentucky, but I don't have any other information. Any help would be appreciated.
