I have a Margrett/ Margaret Gabriellen MacDuffy/McDuffee that was born in AL about the same time as yours. She arried John Calvin Scott in Marshall, MS about 1890. I have lots of info on their descendents. John Calvin Scott was the brother of my great grandmother, Sarah R. Judith Scott. I would love to hear from you. This family moved from Lee, MS to Yell, AR in about 1904 and lived in that area the rest of their lives around Forester and Ola, AR. I believe I have the parents of Margaret McDuffee. I think her father was Angus V. McDuffee born 1831 GA and her mother was probably Mary Ana Barnett born 1832 Coosa Co, AL. She died in Franklin or Marion Co, AL. I bet she is the one you are talking about. There was a sister named Martha A McDuffie born about 1860.
We are continuing our search for the missing link in our family tree.

We are searching for information on the parents of Thomas or *John Thomas
MCAFEE, who was born ca 1800 in PA. According to DNA testing this is from
the line from John MCFEE/MCDUFFEE who came to NH in the early 1700's from
Londonderry, Ireland. His wife was Martha (Matchless Martha) We see that
his son or grandson changed the spelling to MCAFEE, but we have not been
able to make the conection.

Jim's line is as follows:

*John Thomas MCAFEE Married Nancy BLAIR 11/04/1826, in Davidson Co. TN. They
had three children, Emily bn 02/17/1827(8), married James Porter 3/11/1846,
Lenora bn 02/18/1829, married John Fryer 9/22/1846We think that Thomas died
in August 1833 in Florence Alabama. Nancy remarried Alfred Fryer 2/12/1839,
they also had issue.

**John Thomas (Jr) and Mary ANDERSON, had 10 children, I will just list
their
names and if any more info is wanted I can post what I have later.
**William Ellihue
John Edward (these first two were twins)
Samuel
Robert
Richard
Lou
Sarah (Sally)
Rowena
Charlie
Melvin Austin

**William (Willie) Ellihue MCAFEE married Rebecca CLINARD in Robertson Co TN
12/19/1892
They had 7 children
Mary Lee
***James Patterson
Florence
Ernest (removed to OK)
Beulah
Eula (Beula and Eula were twins)
Addie Mae

***James Patterson MCAFEE moved to Missouri and married Lillie Inez BROOKMAN
theyhad10 children
Frank Gordon
Lloyd
Leora
****James Arthur
Dorothy
Mary Francis
Raymond
Bessie Ruth
Clarence
John Verlin

****James Arthur MCAFEE moved back to Tennessee and married Mildred Francis
SHEARON,8/17/1942 they had two sons
*****James Douglas MCAFEE
Paul Edward

Thanks for any help,
Jim and Ginger McAfee

Ginger,
I'm a descendnat of John and Martha from NH. Can you send a outline of your oldest ancestor for the McDuffee/McAfee line? I have a ton of stuff on the family including those who used the McAfee surname. You can email me directly at BrooksGen4@AOL.com, but the list will save your info if you send it back through this email list. This way future researchers can find it and make connections. Thank you

Nancy's mother was Flora McFarland who was married to a Mr. McDuffie. Her children were Nancy(m.Dempsey Rivers), Elizabeth(m.Coleman Ford), and Mary(or Polly)(m. David Rosser). Flora was married second to a Mr. Wilson. My Dempsey Rivers is the son of William Rivers who we believe to be the William Jr. in the William Rivers/Temple Dempsey line though we cannot document it. In 1936 my gguncle C.D. Rivers received a letter from a Mrs. Robert Rivers of Chesterfield SC in which she indicated that the children of William Rivers/Temple Dempsey were:
I.Mark b. abt. 1735
m. Miss Brown
Children: 1- Betsey b1784 d1844
m. 1804 William Rivers(1st cousin)
m. 2nd Betsey ?
Children: 1- Matthew
2- Mark
3- Luke
4- John
m. 3rd Katie Parker
Children: 1- Sam - m. Annie Parker, went to GA
2- Flora- unmarried
3- Mark - went to MO
4- Sarah- unmarried
5- Martha- married Mr. Moore in GA
6- Wesley- married in GA

II. William Jr. - b.1737

III. Frederick - b.1739 d.1810, m. Sarah Purvis b. abt.1745
d. 1814

This Mrs. Robert Rivers had full records of Frederick Rivers. She wrote that she had visited two relatives, a Mrs. Thurman,89, and a Mr. Rivers,90, who firmly believed that family tradition plus facts would show our Dempsey Rivers to have been the son of William Rivers Jr.

I do know that our Dempsey Rivers had a brother named Michael Rivers(not listed is Mrs. Robert Rivers letter) who migrated to Dekalb Co. GA in 1826 with Dempsey from SC. 1830 Dekalb Co. census lists Michael and Dempsey living side by side amid several families of Thurmans. The Thurman and Rivers families have intermarried frequently through the years. Michael and Dempsey moved to Chattooga County GA in 1832. An 1840 Chattooga Co. census again lists them side by side. Michael and his wife Angela lived for a while on Dempsey's farm, Riversdale. Family history says that after a few years in Chattooga Co. Michael felt the area was becoming too populated and so moved on. We have no record of where.
Our family history tells of a Nellie Rivers who married Benjiman Thurman Jr. and Sallie Rivers who married Ben Little. We believed these two to have been sisters of Michael and Dempsey.

Dempsey Rivers and Nancy McDuffie's children:
1 - William b.1822-1824 died in infancy
1 - Eliza b.1820 m.Richard Stanton
3 - Elizabeth(Betty) b.1822 or 1824 d.1855 m. Hales Rice
4 - Mary Alice b.1826 d.1910 m.Joseph kellett
5 - Nancy b.1828 d.1906 m.Norman Ford
6 - Sarah b.1830d.1909 m.John White Thurman(his 2nd wife)
7 - Dempsey James b. 1832 m.Ann Shirling
8 - John Wesley b.1834 d.1913 m.Eliza Jane Thurman(this is
my gggrandfather)
9 - Martha b.1836 d.1855
10 - Jane b. 1838 d. 1855

John Wesley Rivers Children:
Clovis Dempsey Rivers
Octavia Elizibeth Rivers
Martha Jane(or Ann) Rivers
Cordelia Vashti Rivers
John Jay Rivers
Lillie Rivers(my ggrandmother)
Hillary Herbert Rivers
James Gordon Rivers

I have some more info. on marraiges, family stories, etc. I live on the land that Dempsey Rivers settled in 1832 in what was then Floyd Co. GA. It is now Chattooga Co. GA(formed in 1838). Chattooga Co. was formed from parts of Walker and Floyd counties.
I don't know if this has helped you any and you may not even get this since the post I am replying to is so old. Let me know if this helped and I would be interested in any family history that you have which is relevant to this line.
Thanks, Beth

Do you know where Samuel & James father is buried? I found their mother in Sandhill Cemetery (Bethlehem Methodist Church now). I started my research on Mary Jane McDuffie who married James C. (Jim) Spires, my great great grandfather. Do you have any other information on the McDuffie family? If so you can email me at mjohnt@earthlink.net
Mary

Ida B. McDuffie, dau of William Wallace McDuffie and Mary Etta Trotter

Ida B. McDuffie, daughter of William Wallace McDuffie and Mary Etta Trotter.

Ida, age 32, is found in the 1900 Etowah Co., AL census, living with her mother Mary McDuffie. In the household are two children, Henry W., age 12, and Mary, age 10. These children are listed as nephew and niece. All three are recorded with the name McDuffie. I think this is an error on the part of the census taker. I believe Ida has a different last name and it is possible the two children are hers.

Ida is listed as a widow in the 1900 census. I found a marriage record for Ida McDuffie and John Mohlford, married in Etowah Co., AL 8 Dec 1887. The child Henry listed above is recorded as a birthdate of Sep 1887 in the census record - possibly a mistake by the recorder? We have all seen wrong birth dates many times in the census records.

There is also a marriage record for Ida Wolford and L P Hood, married in Etowah Co., AL 25 Nov 1900. I think the John Mohlford above is really Wolford. There is a John Walford in the 1880 Jackson Co., AL census record. Jackson Co. is fairly close to Etowah Co. This John Walford is recorded as born in Tennessee in 1859. The two children Henry and Mary in the 1900 census records are recorded as their father born in Tennessee. There is no other John Wolford (or similiar spelling) in the vicinity in 1880 born in TN. I think it is the same person.

Ida is next found in the 1910 Etowah Co., AL census record living with her second husband, Porter Hood. There are no children in the household. It shows this is Ida's second marriage, that she and Porter have been married 11 years, and Ida has given birth to 4 children, with 2 children living. So Porter must be L. Porter, as stated in the marriage record.

Ida is next found in the 1920 Etowah Co., AL census record living with her husband L. P. Hood. There are no children in the household.

Ida is next found in the 1930 Etowah Co., AL census record. Her name is listed as Ida Bell Hood. Her husband's name is listed as Loui P. Hood (Louis). In the household is a granddaughter by the name of Catherin Cookson, age 13. According to the census record, Catherine's father was born in Maine and her mother was born in Alabama. Since L.P. Hood and Ida did not have any children that survived to adulthood, this must be a daughter of Ida's daughter from her first marriage.

Working backwards, Catherine Cookson is found in the 1920 Etowah Co., AL census record listed as Katherine Cookson. She is the daughter of C. L. Cookson and Mamie. Her father C.L. is recorded as born in AL, but his father was born in Maine and his mother was born in Canada. Mother Mamie was born in 1890 AL and Mamie's father was born in Tennessee. This fits perfectly the Mary from the 1900 Etowah Co., AL census record living with Ida. There are two other children in the Cookson household, Mary age 9 and Margaret age 5.

Working further back, Mamie Cookson is found in the 1910 Etowah Co., AL census record. Again, she was born in AL in 1890, father born in TN. Her husband is listed as Curtis L. Cookson. First marriage for both of them and no children. Curtis' father was born in Maine, his mother was born in Kansas (likely a mistake on the part of the census taker-Canada could sound like Kansas, and it should be Canada).

Working further back, Curis L. Cookson is found in the 1880 Etowah Co., AL census. His name is listed as Lamar Cookson. He is living with his parents Eli and Oliv. Eli was born in Maine and Oliv was born in Canada.

Taking another look at Louis Porter Hood and working back, Porter is found in the 1900 Etowah Co., AL census record living with a younger sister, brother and his mother. He is also found in the 1880 Etowah Co., AL census record, name recorded as Louis P. Hood, living with his parents B.F. Hood and Mary J. + 9 siblings (two of which were living with him in 1900). Finally, he is found as a 2 month old child in the 1870 Cherokee Co., AL census record. His name is recorded as Lewis. He is living with his parents Benj and Mary J. and 5 siblings.

So my conclusions are: Ida Bell (possibly Belle?) McDuffie, b. Oct 1867 married (1st) John Walford, b. TN ca 1859, married Etowah Co., AL 8 Dec 1887. John died prior to 1900. Two children: Henry Wolford and Mary/Mamie Wolford. Ida married (2nd) Louis Porter Hood, b. AL 1870, married Etowah Co., AL 25 Nov 1900. Ida's daughter Mary/Mamie Wolford married Curtis Lamar Cookson, 3 children as mentioned above.

Does anyone have any information to support or refute any of this?

John Flack McDuffie, b. AL 22 Mar 1873

Does anyone know who this is? Is he the son of Norman Henry McDuffie and his wife Julia? The age fits the 1880 Etowah Co., AL census record (in the household of N.H. McDuffie with N.H.'s third wife Mary).

There is a WWI Draft Registration for John Flack McDuffie, registered in Etowah Co., AL. Date of birth 22 Mar 1873. It states his wife's name is Lucile.

I found them in the 1910 Jefferson Co., AL; 1920 Etowah Co., AL; and 1930 Wayne Co., GA census records. John and Lucile had 2 children, John Jr. b. 1910 and Eleanor b. 1912.

I don't know where John is in 1900, however his wife Lucile is with her parents in 1900 (Etowah Co., AL). Lucile is the daughter of John B. and Eula Moragne.
Hi,Gail, I live in Clewiston now with my 80+ mother, Ethel. She was glad to hear from you. I have moved back into Florida and now teach at Clewiston High. I do believe we're cousins. Uncle Rob would have been my great uncle and your dad, Dutch, was my dad Hooker's first cousin. I've been working on family history for some time and have gotten good information from my first cousin, Michael Strong. He is Cuthbert[Beth] McDuffie Strong's son, Wille's grandson. He is active in these threads and if you haven't contacted him...he's a terrific source. He has my Grandmother Cuthbert's family Bible. I'll email you with my local telephone number. We'd love to hear from you.

New Macfie e-mail list

We have just created a new e-mail list which we hope will include Macfies of all spellings and from all societies. I know that many of us are really stuck with our particular branch of the family tree, and since some of the name spellings are so similar, we might have relatives that we are not even aware of with their name spelled just a little bit differently than ours. I am not sure how much mail this new list will generate (if any) but thought we would give it a try, and am inviting you to join. You can join from the web site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macfieclan or just send a message to macfieclan-subscribe@yahoogroups.com once you are on, you can post a message and it will go to all the other list members at macfieclan@yahoogroups.com Come join us and share your genealogy and history knowledge with others. As soon as you join, send a message to let others know you are on line.

Jim and Ginger McAfee
Macfie Clan Society of America
www.macfiesocietyofamerica.com

My husband, Jim McAfee, has learned through DNA that he is a descendent of this line of John McDuffie/McFee. of New Hampshire. Before the DNA results, we had hit a brick wall, because we could get no farther back than his ggg grandfather, Thomas McAfee in PA. We are still stuck there, but at least now we know that somewhere along the line someone changed from McDuffie to McAfee. I understand that a son or grandson of John did so, does anyone have any information on the line that changed the spelling to McAfee?

Ginger McAfee

My maiden name is McDuffie and I am related to Cassandra McDuffie. The information I have came from another McDuffie family member who is an excellent researcher. If you have already heard from her, what I give you will be repetitious. I have David Blair born 1828 in Perry Co., AL, died 27 Sep 1883 in Etowah Co., AL. He married Cassandra McDuffie, daughter of Murdock McDuffie and Margaret Chappelear. She was born 1827 in Franklin Co., GA and died 29 Sep 1883 in Etowah Co., AL. I have 3 children for them: George W., Mary Elizabeth, and Norman C. Blair. If this is helpful, I have some details and a lot on the McDuffie side. I would love to know what you have, especially on the Blair side. Please let me know by emailing me at hamatakej@yahoo.com.

My mother, Vassie Cuthriell Jones would be turning in her grave if she knew that you all are from Labelle, Ft. Myers, etc. Her Mother was Mary Ann McDuffie Cuthriell from Wewahitchka, Fl. Daddy was D. Lee Jones, former pastor of Labelle Methodist Church and also Grand Ave. Methodist Church in Ft. Myers. How she would have loved to have known that your family was there. This is before you were born, in 1944 and 1948. Her family of McDuffies were from Geneva, Al. and West Florida, around Panama City. We probably are not kin, but I just had to tell you this.
My maternal grandmother was Mary Ann McDuffie, daughter of Mary Ann Garrison and John McDuffie. This family was predominately from Geneva Co., Al., but our family migrated to North Florida. When my Grandmother Mary Ann McDuffie was born her mother, Mary Ann Garrison McDuffie died in childbirth. John McDuffie remarried and settled in Georgia. We lost track of Mary Ann McDuffie at age 5 and did not find her again until 1875. She married Jasper Cuthriell in Geneva Co., Al. They moved to North Florida. Mary Ann McDuffie was born in 1855. I have our family tree and will share with you. Do you think that this is of your lineage? Mary Ann McDuffie disappeared from the census at age 6. Her father, David, remarried. Have been unable to locate her until she married Jasper Bud Cuthriell in 1877.
Dear Gloria,
I would enjoy corresponding with you about your Swor - McDuffie lineage. I am a little confused by your post as Zollie was a Swor not a McDuffie. I look forward to corresponding with you more!
Sincerely,
Laura
