Hi Roy, nice to meet you Josh.
I have a couple questions about the McElrath, Self, Cashman lines. First, I did figure out from the 1900 census that Margaret had been married to McElrath prior to then, that she was running a boarding house (?), her parents lived with her, and Henry S Cashman (my ggrandfather) was a boarder.
My question: I have a record of Bertha, Clarence, and Dewey McElrath. On the 1910 census it appears as though Dewey is Jewel, that is incorrect. My grandmother, Anna Cleo, definitely said it was Dewey.
Also, Henry Shoup Cashman died in Salem, Marion County, OR. I have a copy of his death cert. I also have a copy of his WWI draft registration. My son is going to try to take a picture of his and Fannie (Thomas) Cashman's headstones.
Question #2: What happened to Bertha, Clarence, and Dewey when Henry took the family west?
Question #3: Grandma said Dewey lived in Washington State and was alcoholic? I can't find a SSDI.
Maybe one of you have some answers for me. Thanks so much!
Rita Birch, grammauv2@gmail.com

I am trying to get in touch with descendants of the John Edgar McElrath who attended Harvard University in the Fall of 1860. A great uncle of mine was a classmate, lived in the same dormitory and was friends. The entries in his journal and his letters home contain some poignant passages about their leave-taking when Edgar left in April, 1861 to return South for the war. I would be willing to share these passages with descendants. If Edgar left any similar writings of his feelings at the time, I would appreciate seeing those and a picture of Edgar.

My McElrath roots are in Woodruff, SC.
John Augustus McElrath, my 2nd Great-Grandfather, was raised my his older brother, Adam Jr., who inherited the family plantation in Woodruff.
John's parents were Adam McElrath and Rebecca Wingo.
John married Dorcas(Dorcus) Quilliams. Little confusion on Dorca's last name. Could be Quilliams, Williams or Gilliams.
John had 10 siblings...
Adam Jr.
Elizabeth
Rachel
Nancy
William J.
Joseph
Susannah
Abner W.
Harriett
David
**They were all born on the plantation.
The parents died when John A. was about 3 years old.

If this is the same line, I would love to share information with you.

hello: if you have the SSN, you can actually send off for more information (for example, you can obtain the place of birth, the place of residence when the person applied for a SS card, etc.). i think the cost has increased to about 20 dollars. the form can be obtained from http://www.rootsweb.com, but i cannot recall the exact location within those web pages. i have used the forms before and it takes about 2 months to receive the information. it still might be worth it though. good luck. karen
