James worked in the coal mine at Rockvale just SW of there. Depending on the census he immigrated to the US between 1869 and 1872 so that would have put them in Ohio in 1874. I have found nothing positive on them before 1884. I had always assumed they were married in Ohio in 1883 but may be wrong. I have never heard of Daisy before. Did she stay in Colorado or go back to Ohio. What part of Ohio were your James and Mary from?

I am looking for anyone that can add information, particularly as to the parents of George W. Here is what I have on the family:

1900 Wise County VA census, Dist 129, P. 68, household 427/611
George McElroy, age 25, b. VA
Sam, age 19 (b. VA)
Ova, age 17 (b. VA)
Viola, age 15 (b. VA)
Lonnie, age 10 (b. VA)
Annie L, age 6 (b. KY)

KY birth index lists the birth of Annie S McElroy, 8 Oct 1913, mother is listed as Caroline Cox.

1930 Hamilton County OH, Dist 1, P. 9, household 53/73
George McElroy, age 56, b.
C E McElroy & wife Cordelia

I am looking for anyone that could add any information to the family of C E McElroy and wife Cordelia. Here is what I have:

I have a copy of a hand written letter written by C E McElroy in 1938 from Clay Co, WVA to Richard Pearl Morris, whom he calls "Step Dad" in which C E McElroy is seeking verification of his date of birth, likely to apply for a Social Security #.

There is the marriage listed in Wise VA of Lillie McElroy to Ballard Tate in 1915, her parents are listed as C E McElroy and Cordelia McElroy. There is another marriage in 1927 in Wise VA for Fred McElroy to Maxie Stapleton. His parents listed as C E McElroy and Cordelia McElroy. A third marriage in Wise County in 1931 lists Dovie McElroy marriage to Ted E Johnson. Her parents listed as Charles McElroy & Cordelia Clark. His parents as George W. Johnson & Roxie Richmond.

In the 1930 Wise VA census, Lillie & Ballard Tate family are listed, children Demmer, Beatrice, Audrey M, Holly B and then a Dovie McElroy (age 13) listed as sister in law to Ballard Tate.

Ballard and Lillie Tate are also listed in the 1920 Wise VA census, Only child is Demmer.

Lillie & Ballard Tate are buried in the East Stone Gap Cemetery and I have a copy of her obituary. Nothing is mentioned in the obituary regarding her parents or names of her siblings.

I have not been able to find C E McElroy with wife Cordelia in any census. I believe that I have his WWI draft card, registered in Wise VA, listed as Charles Emmet McElroy, nearest relative is Alpha McElroy.

My theory is that C E McElroy went by the name of Charles E Stamper early in his life, then started using the McElroy surname after 1900.

Cordelia Clark, daughter of James M Clarkston and Rebecca McKinney, married Charles E Stamper 12 Feb 1897 in Harlan KY.

This family is listed in the 1900 Wise VA census, children are Lilly, born Jul 1899 and Charles born 1897. They are listed under the Stamper surname. Father was Charles, mother Cordelia in the 1900 census. This Charles E Stamper was the son of Emily Stamper. He was born about 1876. Shortly after his birth, his mother married Richard Pearl Morris (this was the first marriage of Richard Pearl Morris). Charles Stamper was not the son of Richard Pearl Morris.

Thus, it would make sense that if this Charles E Stamper and C E McElroy are the same person, that he would call Richard Pearl Morris 'Step Dad".

If anyone has any information that would help verify that C E McElroy and Charles E Stamper are the same person, it would be appreciated.
Hey all,
Im looking for info on an Eliza McElroy and John Tilford McElroy. Heres what I do know.
John was born Jan 19 1852 and died July 3 1917 in Adair County Ky.
The 1860 Census shows him in the home of a Francis McElroy, Adair County Ky, however on Oct 23 1862, court records in Adair shows Francis being appointed guardian of John, listed as "the minor heir of Eliza McElroy, now deceased" This leads me to believe that Francis may not have been his father. I cant seem to find anything on this Eliza McElroy who apparently died sometime between 1852 and 1862.
Does anyone have any info that may aid me?
Thanks alot.

Thank you for the quick response. One of my great-great-grandmothers was a Sarah A. ANDERSON (1826-ca 1870-80) who is said to be a daughter of Joseph ANDERSON and Mary McELROY and that Mary McELROY was the daughter of John W. McELROY and Elizabeth JAMISON, which would appear to connect to your line. I'm hoping to find evidence of this and prove the connections. I would be most grateful for information, references or suggestions. It appears my Anderson-McElroy line left North Carolina (based on cesnus) and removed to Kentucky between 1847 and 1850.
Thanks!
Myra

Hi Myra,

I think we are from the same line. My 2nd great grandfather was John Asten McElroy (1811-1855). I believe he was descended from Archibald McElroy and Ann Asten but I'm not sure what generation. His father was John McAlroy (d. 1853, married to someone named Brown who died in 1832). My McElroys came from TN, not sure where, to Lafayette County Missouri around 1818.
My email is jmcelroy47@yahoo.com
Joan McElroy

I'm going to list my earliest McElroys and maybe some of you can help me connect to your lines better.

My first McElroy that I have record of:

John McIlroy I have he was born in 1682, Baliard, Scotland. Hope the city is spelled correctly. He died at Kirkinner, Wigtown, Scotland. His son was Hugh McIlroy, born 1682, Kirkinner, Wigtown, Scotland. On 29 January 1701 Hugh married Esther (McDowal) McDowell, daughter of Thomas McDowell and Ann Locke.I show two sons for them: James McElroy, born 13 Jan 1705, County Down, Ireland; and John McElroy, born 19 Dec 1713, in Ireland. There seems to be some question in my records on James birth year. Some think it could have have been 1715, and if so John would have been the elder, but that throws the marriage date off! It is also stated that records weren't always kept up to date, and when it would be reported, the officials used the date of entry!! Guess we'll never know at this late date.

James McElroy came from Ireland 1872

Looking for parents, etc of James McElroy married to Mary Touvell. Father was John McElroy married to Catherine Loferty both from Ireland and not sure if they ever came to the US. James originally came to Ohio and was a Coal Miner in the Cambridge area. In the 1880s they went to the Canon City/Fremont Colorado area as coal miners. While there Anna, George, Margaret, Emma, and Robert were born and baptized at the Church of St. Michael at Canon City, Co. They returned to the Cambridge, Ohio area and had 3 more children. I know that James, John and Catherine were from Ireland but haven't been able to find out much more than this. I've looked at a few other users trees and we seem to be related but there is some conflicting information in the dates and details. Any help would be appreciated. By the way John and Catherine are my gggrandparents, James and Mary my ggrandparents, Henry Jackson and Margaret(McElroy) Jackson my grandparents. I am Michael Jackson and live in the Denver area.

I don't know where Mark McKleroy was buried, but wife Susannah was living in Randolph County, Alabama in 1860, chances are she was buried there.
Karen

I am aware of Jesse LeCroy being married to Martha Peek daughter of Solomon Peek of DeKalb Co Alabama. Some times there is some confusion about the last name McElroy and LeCroy. The last name is also refered as LeCroix at times.

Re: John McElroy

The dates fit, but unfortunately, the location does not. I have documentation from Allegheney County, PA indicating that the John McElroy that I am researching died in that county. Also, the mother of at least one of his children was named Mary J. Shearer. Interesting. I'd like to know more about your John McElroy anyway. This branch of my family is quite elusive!

Mary Frum
