Classification: Query
Surnames: McElwee, Whittington or Whitington
I came across this in my searches just recently:
From the Evening Observer, Dunkirk, Chautauqua, NY
Tuesday, 2 October 1883
A Sheriff Stabbed and Killed -- His Murderer Shot
New Orleans, Oct 2
The Picayune's Summit, Mississippi, special says: "A. J. Whitington, Sheriff of Amite County, was stabbed twice in the back at Liberty Saturday and killed by Eugene McElwee. The trouble grew out of politics. Both were Democrats. After the murder McElwee was surrounded by a crowd, one of whom shot him. He died in ten minutes. Both parties were highly connected."
Does anybody have more information that this? I have stumbled onto the index of the Death notice for Eugene in the Brookhaven Democrat 6 Oct 1883 but not for Whitington. An Andrew J Whittington does have a notice in 1887. I do not have access to the paper itself. Does anybody have any stories or knowledge of this event?
Thank you,
Clorinda
