Searching for Abate/McEwan Relatives

I was separated from my family as an infant. I know very little. I do know that my father's name was Michael. He came from a large Italian family on the East Coast (possibly Connecticut). His parents were immigrants. He married my mother, Catherine McEwan, sometime in the 1950's. During their marriage they lived in California and Nevada. He operated heavy machinery, at one time for a mine in Nevada. She was a nurse. My mother died in 1960 in Reno, Nevada. I have an older sister, Margaret Ann, and an older brother, James Michael. My mother had two sisters that I know of, Caroline and Rose, and I believe they may have had a brother. When I was very young, I know my grandmother lived in Boston, Massachusetts. If you can help me locate any relatives or learn about my heritage, please email me at gypsyfantasy@hotmail.com.
I'm looking for some information on my family.

Unfortunately, I didn't show enough interest in this while my g/father was still around.

So far I know

My g/father:
Francis George McEwan
b. Dec. 22, 1915 Wakaw, Saskatchewan
d. April, 1993 Highland, MI

He had one brother who died that my dad couldn't remember the name. He also had one brother Bill that moved to Michigan to work on farms in what is now the Detroit suburbs. He had two sisters. The first sister Elsie had three children Doug, Dave, and Marilyn. The second sister Jessie had one daughter Mary Ellen.

My gg/father was Alexander. I don't know much about him. He grew up in Wiarton, ON then moved to Alberta the Wakaw, SA and later back to Wiarton. I do know that his father (don't know the name) owned and operated the livery stable in Wiarton and that his uncle was the local reeve.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This is a hoot!

For years I have been looking for Robert McKune from Glasgow who came to America in 1754 -- and to no avail -- nada -- brick wall.

So, I had a major breakthrough with my Gyles Family from Ireland, and low and behold I descend from another Robert McEwan, from Perth Scotland. This is the information I have.

Robert McEwan b. 1698 m. Agnes Ferguson
Son William b. 1718 m. Margaret Gray

Wm's Son James McEwan b. Archibald Henderson.

Thanks for any info anyone can possibly provide. I really appreciate it.

I just have to laugh, and as researchers you have to smile too, I have spent years searching for a Robert McKune (who knows how it was spelled prior to America) I have searched hundreds of Roberts, and until today had no idea I was actually looking for 2 Robert McEwan's -- from entirely different families. LOL!

Does this make me my own Grandma???

Sheila McCormack
Gyles Family Historian
McKune Family Historian

I am looking for information about my great great grandfather Henry McEwan. He was born in Scotland in June 1851 and was married in 1873 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. After immigrating to Pennsyvania in 1881, he and his wife Elizabeth and surviving children settled in Pittsburgh. Their children were Henry Jr, George, William, Alice and James. I haven't been able to find any info before his marriage in 1873, including place of birth or the names of his parents. He did have a sister, also named Elizabeth, as she is listed as living with him in the 1920 US census. Can anyone help?

Perthshire McEwan Family-Emigrated to Kentucky

My great-great-great grandmother Mary Sharp, was born around 1788 in Deanston. Her older sister, Isabella, was approximately two years older. Their father was William Sharp. Family history holds that he was a minister but I can find nothing to support this. We know nothing about their mother.

Isabella Sharp married Alex Whitehead in Glasgow in 1819 and promptly emigrated to America where they settled in Kentucky. Their only offspring was a set of twins—John and Margaret Whitehead. Alex Whitehead died in 1833.

Mary Sharp married William McEwan in or around 1817.

They had six children:

Margaret Janet b. 1819-1821 (remained in Scotland, married John Balfour, settled in Doune and raised two sons Walter and William)

James Edward b. 1820

Christina b. 1830 (settled in Frankfort, KY and eventually married William Craik who served with her brother in the Civil War)

Alexander Campbell

Robert

William b. 1836

In or around 1838, William McEwan died. Mary and her children emigrated to America and settled near Isabella (Sharp) Whitehead.

Margaret Janet (McEwan) Balfour lists her birthplace several ways in the census data—Dunblane and Kilbryde. I’m not sure if there were changes in the Parish boundaries that made this happen.

In the 1851 Dunblane census I found a family of McEwan’s living next to or very near a family of Sharp’s. They appear to be about the right age to be siblings or cousins of Mary Sharp McEwan and William McEwan.
My grandmother's birth place is reported in the 1901 Edinburgh Census as Blackfriars, Glasgow. We understand that George Russell Carruthers and Maud Jessie Glencairn Fitzsimons, who are listed as her parents in that Census, were not in fact her birth parents. I've also not been able to find any sign of a McEwan in their ancestors. She is listed as aged 4 in the 1901 Census and we understand her birth date to have been 21 August 1897. I've not been able to find any record of her birth in ScotlandsPeople. Does anyone have any ideas on where to look next? I live in Canada.

Seeking marriage info on John McCUTCHEON (could be McHUTCHON) and Janet McEWAN, who immigrated to Scotland after their marriage; to County Ayr. The 1851 Scottish census lists this family:
John McHUTCHON 45 b. Dawn, Ireland
wife Janet 40 b. Dawn, Ireland
James 12 b. Ayr,Scotland
Mary 6 b. Wigtonshire, Scotland
John 4 b. Wigtonshire, Scotland
Samuel 1 b. Ayr,Scotland
John McHUTCHON's death record on May 9, 1873 in Ayr suggests his birth year was 1805, that his wife Janet's surname was McEWAN; and that his father was named John. Since first born son James (my great great grandfather) was born abt. 1839, I gather the marriage occurred abt. 1837/38. The middle name of James was KENNEDY; this may have been the surname of his grandmother! By the death of son James, the spelling of the surname was McCUTCHEON. Any help would be appreciated!

Looking for information about Patrick & Bridgit McEwan. Their son Cornealus McCue married Jane McIntyre in 1855 in Scotland (Springburn, Lanark County). On the marriage listing Cornealus McCue is listed as being born in Emiskill(?) Donegal Ireland in 1819. Cornealus and Jane had 2 sons, Patrick and James who eventually emigrated to the US and then spelled their last name McHugh. Would anyone know if Patrick and Bridgit had other children?

I'm looking for info on Patrick McEwan born Coatbridge, Old Monkland abt 1853 and who married Mary Ann Stanfield in 1875. Patrick & Mary Ann had 6 chidren: Mary b:1877; Michael b:1879; Thomas b:1881; Sarah? b:abt 1885; Margaret b:1887 and John b:1889. Patrick was a son of Matthew McEwan/McKeon/McKaon and Mary Welsh who came from Ireland, County Roscommon, I believe. I have found one other son of Matthew and Mary, Michael who was born in 1855. Matthew was a son of Bartholomew McEwan/McKeon and Bridget Mulherron who I assume also came from Roscommon. Any of it familiar/
swinister@hotmail.com

Davy McEwan of Liverpool, 1919

Remembrance Day has me going back through my grandfather's papers, and again I have been reading the letters sent to him by an old friend, Davy McEwan, in 1919 and 1920. They are wonderful letters that I would like to share with his descendants, if indeed he had any. His address on the letters is 57 Dyson St., Walton, Liverpool in 1919. In a 1924 city directory it shows a Charles McEwan, engineer, at that address, who might have been his father. Charles is not still there in the only other directory I have looked at - 1955 - but there is a George McEwan living on 7 Haddon Ave, Walton, who might be a relative.

Hoping to find a relation of Davy's - Regards, Carole
