McEwing of Scotland

My Great Grandmother's sister was Janet McEwing - Married to David McEwing. My GGrandmother wrote many articles and letters to me regarding the family. I also have pictures and funeral cards for these McEwings. However, I only have info back to David. Janet was born 1799, David around 1795. I just started doing my family history in March of this year and my mother gave me all my grandmothers letters, bibles, pictures, articles etc. My grandmother lived on the family farm in Crowland Twsp, (Welland, Niagara Falls). The farm was given to my grandmother's family from Queen Victoria as crown land. The farm was granted to Andrew Findley who died before living there (I have the whole story on this) and his brother James Findley came from Sterlingshire Scotland to the Farm (I have a whole story on this too). James Findley's daughter Mary Findley married David McEwing (b 1835)- son of David and Janet McEwing (noted above). I have info on all the current family. Another daughter of James Findley - Margaret Findley married my GGrandfather - Alanson Learn. Alanson's son James Alexander (my grandfather) married Edith Sherk (who wrote all the letters and history of all the families). I have many pictures to go through (most have names on back - some don't). If I can I will post any pictures of McEwings on this site in future dates if anybody wants them.
Now any help I can get on David's parents would be appreciated (I think his father was William but not sure). His wife Janet was from Dumbartonshire Scotland.

I am also reasearching my husband's family with very little success as I have NO info at all. He was born in Ireland but his family evidently originated in the Ayreshire area of Scotland. His name is Woodburn (his father's name was Woodbyrne but he changed it to Woodburn - I am told because it was originally Woodburn?) If anyone has info on this name it would be really appreciated.

Robert Mc*spell however* - Glasgow 1754 or 1762

Robert's son Joseph stabalized our spelling to McKune at the time of American Revolution. Out family history states that Robert came to America from Glasgow, Scotland in 1754. I just can't get beyond that. Joseph's brother Robert's history states that this Robert came to America in 1762.

If he came in 1762 then he would have definetly had a son, Robert, and possible son Joseph had just been born.

Does anyone have research that goes back to Scotland with a Robert that dissapears around these dates?

Thank you.

Sheila McCormack

They all came from the Campbeltown area, most likely from Ireland. Lots of them settled in and around the Lochgilphead area later. They migrated from there to Grand Metis Canada and settled there. There are still a couple McEwings living in Grand Metis. In records, there are lots of the name on the Island of Bute in Marriage and birth records...but no death records or at least no graves stones on the Island with that name on. No so in the Campbeltown cemetary as there are lots burried there.

Hullo. I'm researching Craigs and Orrs and my particular Orr query just now is about the family of Elizabeth Orr's family.
Her mother was Elizabeth McEwing who was born 1791 in Kilbirnie. She married George Orr who was born in 1787 in Kilbirnie Ayr. There marriage date is in 1812 in Kilbirnie
Also, Elizabeth Orr had a brother. His name was John and he was born April 22, 1815 at Stoneyholm, Kilbirnie Farm.

Has anyone any links/connections/knowledge of this family?
John Craig and Elizabeth Orr would be my Great Great Grand Parents. They moved to Canada 1841/1842.
Thanks,
David.
Cape Breton, Canada.

Lots and Lots of McEwings lived in that area between 1790 and 1850 or so. Also be aware that there were those who were MacEwings and as you stated McEwins as well as McEwings.

Christine.
I'm not sure entirely, but I assume it came from the same place as mcewen, mcewan & mcewin came from. McEoughan (sp?) meaning son of ewen.
There are a few websites out there with information on the origin of the name.

What I do know, is that our family name was spelled McEwin in early 1840's, then changed to McEwan in the mid 1850's. Then, for some unknown reason, 2 of my ancestors started spelling their name McEwing, until they reached the states in late 1800's/early 1900's where it was then spelled McEwen.
Both of the boys had atended school, and knew how to read and write (unlike their parents & grandparents).
I've not been able to locate their other siblings to determine how they were spelling their surnames during this time though.
Allan,
Thank you. Hope it pans out for us both.

At this stage I can only imagine that any common ancestor would be James Mcewan b. abt 1843? in Paisley. That's all I know about him.
His 2 brothers (That I am aware of) were David & John. David married a Susan in 1888, moved to the states in 1890, had one daughter named Jennie and died in Niagara Falls, NY 1907. John married Martha Goudie in 1888, had 3 boys (William, John & Robert) & came to the states immediately after David's death in 1907.
There were 3 sisters I found in Paisley also. Jennie (died young in mid 1870's), Agnes & Isabella. I don't know what happend to the 2 remaining sisters, though I believe one of them (probably Isabella) married a Morrisson.
All of these children were born between 1840's & early 1860's.
Their parents were William McEwan & Isabella Wilkie (or Wilkin) who married in 1840 in Paisley. Both were born in Ireland originally.
mcewens in ireland...

The David McEwing I was searching for as a possible link to yours has been unfruitful. The census turned up no such J. or D. McEwing at all. So I am stuck.

I am aware of the spelling variant. To be honest,i have found McEwen's, MacEwen's, McEwan's, MacEwan's, McCowan's, and McEoughan's as spelling variants. The 'McEwing' variant only appeared around 1880's by one family member. This family member was the only educated person in the family, and I found it hard to believe he would have screwed up the spelling, but he had. HOWEVER, there were no spelling rules then. You simply spelled the name the way you pronounced it, so that is the reason for the many variants.

It is believed that my earlier ancestors came fom Tyrone Ireland. I know they came from Ireland, just not sure where. The other family members (Not McEwan's) came from Tyrone, so I am guesisng they met each other there, and then moved to Scotland.

However, Tyrone was a large port area, and facilitated travelling/immigrating. Not to mention, Irelands record hall caught fire and lost most of their records from prior to the early 1800's, making it difficult to find info on ancestors there...

-r

Just to let u know I began searching McEwing and was advised by someone in Ireland that the name would indeed be spelled McEwen there-she says to concentrate the search in the Ulster Counties and perhaps Tyrone.

If in fact they did have a son named David he probably would've been born around mid-late 1840's in Paisley Scotland. But Iwon't be able to confirm the existance of such a son until later this week. (I have a D. or a J. (So hard to read handwriting) McEwing showing up as a witness (Brother) on a family members death cert. in 1878, and I am checking the census for the residents there)
That's the only info I have at the moment. Once I can confirm his existence I'll be able to find more info and let you know...
-r

Well, I wouldn't discount the whole idea, but until I find more info I would say there is no link.
However, I am still searching for a David McEwen (or variation) since Isabella Wilkie's father's name was David. I am expecting she would have named one of her sons David, but have not found any records of one yet. I am currently awaiting information (Should get itnext week) that may prove fruitful on that.
I have found alot of variations on the mcewans. McQueen, McKeown, McKeon, McCune, McCowan, McKown, McEwen, McEwan, McEwin, McEwing & Ewing. (And probably others I have forgotten). It all depended on the person recording the information, unless you get lucky and your ancestor knows how to read/write. Unfortunately none of my ancestors were so educated, except John. And he's the only one who spells it McEwing.
I keep all correspondance on file, so if I come across anything, I'll let you know...
-r

McEwing/McEwen/McEwin family

I am searching for the family, also, connected to the Niagara Penninsula in Ontario. There is some connection to the Current family of which we are a part. the ones I am searching were already in the area in the time you speak of, but yours probably chose the area to come to because of relatives already there. In the 1871 Census for Wainsfleet, Niagara Penninsula, Ontario I found a Phoebe McEwin, age 65, born in Ontario, Scottish origin, and a Charlotte McEwin, age 74, born in New Brunswick, of Scottish origin, living with an Elva Current, age 36, wife Eliza, age 26 (born in Ontario, English origin), son John Wells Current, age 11 months. then, in 1883, I find a David McEwing serving as pallbearer for Huldah Current, widow of John Current, Crowland Twp, Niagara Penninsula. Our g-grandfather Joseph Nelson Current when orphaned in the 1850's was raised in this area by two "maiden aunts" who had a "funny accent". I wonder if it was Phoebe and Charlotte McEwin, since they seem so closely connected to Current families?

McEwings of Niagara Falls Canada

The McEwings i am researching are on the Canadian side of the falls, but there was a lot of travel back and forth. Probably no relation to yours, but it was worth a shot. I live in Muskegon Co., MI, and there is an Ewing road near Twin Lake, northern part of the county. Wonder if sometimes the name was shortened, leaving off the Mc (which merely means "son of"?

Waht would the dates for your David McEwin be, and what would the place be? It was a David McEwing that I found as pallbearer for Huldah Current in Welland, Ontario, reported in the obituary in the Welland Tribune, April 27, 1883, page 7, if that is any help. I sure would appreciate it if you would keep an eye out for a Charlotte and a Phoebe, who were either widowed or spinsters, who may have raised Joseph Nelson Current in the late 1840's.
