Hi:

Could you please send full date of birth, where he was born and where he lived when he entered the service? I'll try Ancestry's WWI database if you can send this info. There are many Wm McFarlane's so this info is important for searching.

Marg in Sunny Alberta

Hello I know that the Mcfarlanes are cousins to my family. Correct the Mcfarlenes did move to Panama. They are from Jamaica. It is funny because the name Hubert is I am not sure my Great father's name? But my Grandmother was Iris Maude Ogivile. The Mcfarlene's First cousin. I scene on the research that my grandfather had one of the Mc Farlenes live with them it is recorded because we are related she moved from Jamaica to help with my cousins.

Thursday, July 19, 1906-Newspaper article-William McFarlane of Mono township, Ontario

Orangeville Banner
A serious accident occurred on the farm of William McFarlane, on the 7th Line of Mono, near Relessey, by which Robert Mills, a highly respected farmer of the same neighbourhood, received injuries which rendered him unconscious for a couple of days and may yet prove fatal.
He and a number of other men were helping McFarlane take down the framework of an old barn and were lowering one of the sections when the accident occurred. The bent had been loosed from the rest of the structure and was being lowered with the aid of ropes passed over the two remaining bents. When it was seven or eight feet from the ground, the supports of the other two sections gave way and the whole structure fell to the ground. All the other workmen suffered trifling injuries but Mills was struck on the head by a falling beam and pinned to the ground.

Re: Great Great Grandfather

Mr. Peter Macfarlane, sometime of Makaraka, Poverty Bay, was born in 1821, in Forfarshire, Scotland, and was the eldest son of Mr. Peter Macfarlane, dancing-master. He followed the calling of his father up to the time of his settlement in Poverty Bay. In 1849 he left Scotland in the ship "Ramilies," bound for Adelaide, South Australia, and after being in the Australian Colonies for nearly five years he came to Auckland, New Zealand, about 1855. He remained in Auckland for twelve months, but then moved to Nelson, and subsequently resided in Dunedin, and at Moeraki, in Otago. He followed his profession for six years, both in Nelson and Otago. About eighteen months prior to the massacre of Major Biggs by Te Kooti, Mr. Macfarlane and his wife arrived in Poverty Bay, where they engaged in dairy farming. During the Te Kooti raid, the settlers were not allowed to remain at their homesteads at night, and Mr. and Mrs Macfarlane were compelled to cross the Turanganui river every day, and seek the shelter of the Great Redoubt, built by the forces for the protection of the colonists. Before leaving Scotland Mr. Macfarlane married Miss Christina McBain, of Inverness, and they had a family of seven children. Mr. Macfarlane died in October, 1899.
[ The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District] Publication: 1902 ]

2 - Makaraka is a small village about three miles and a half west of Gisborne on the main road, which at this settlement branches to the right and to the left. The road to the right leads to Ormond, Te Karaka, and Opotiki, while that to the left affords communication to Nuhaka Hot Springs, Wairoa, and Napier. Makaraka has a large hotel, a store and post office, a blacksmith's shop and other business premises. There is daily communication with Gisborne by coach. The settlement is in the Poverty Bay road district and in Cook county. Makaraka is remarkable for the natural gas which comes from artesian wells along with the water, and the gas is utilised by several of the settlers for lighting and cooking purposes.
[ The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District] Publication: 1902 ]

I run a clan Macfarlane website at http://www.clanmacfarlanegenealogy.info/genealogy/TNGWebsite... and would be interested in hearing from descendants of this couple

Hi Roberto,

I am answering your e-mail about McFarlanes' in Panama. Interestingly enough I came across this site by browsing my curiosity of my roots in an attempt to construct a family tree for a projected family reunion here in Panama. My ancestors migrated from Jamaica and possibly Barbados. My grandfather's name was Arthur McFarlane and my grandmother was M. something Flatts. There are several McFarlanes' family (I think five or six) here and most if not all claimmed not to be related. At least the ones that I came across had some very stricking features, one of them being the hight and having small faces. You mentioned Samuel McFarlane and I know of a Samuel McFarlane, whom I believe is no longer in Panama. The last time I rememberd him was more than twenty years ago. He had a sick brother and he lived in my community located on the Atlantic Coast of Panama. I believe he migrated to the US. Anyhow, I hope this information is of any help to you.

In 1895 they had a daughter Violet Evelyn MacFarlane (my grandmother)in Dublin and moved to Calcutta India in 1909.
Ships log shown them as Scottish so I am assuming that James was born in Scotland.

Thanks

Sheila

Hi. I also am researching the McFarlanes from Bonhill but the dates are a bit earlier than yours. They may fit it somewhere. I have Hellen McFarlane b c1768 at Darleith, Bonhill, who married my GGGGFather William Kennedy b c1764. They were married on the 8th May 1789 at Charlestown, Bonhill. One son I know of was John b c1820 at Bonhill who married Janet Hopkins Hossack 23 September 1843 also at Bonhill. It would be great if our lines cross somewhere. Perhaps you could let me know.
Regards,
Barbara
